She also played her guitar on "Just Like Tivoli" and "Given In". Carl played his "Natural" Gibson Ripper bass. I don't know what type of amplification he uses. WHAT?? She played One and Many and Here and Hereafter at Ectofest West and I'm just now hearing about this?? The Chosen One isn't surprising, she's been doing that live for decades, but the others?? *faints dead away* *wakes up, looks around, remembers, cries* Please, PLEASE send me a playlist. I've never heard this show and I just realized I have no information for the new pages I'm doing. For "Ectofest West" I have this: Set List: ? Lineup: ? Openers: ? And that's how it will stay until I GET A SET LIST FROM SOMEONE WHO WAS THERE. *breaks down sobbing* *regains composure* I was going to ask for that next. I realized it's not on the list I sent that meth went through. Who was there with Happy? Who all was on before Happy? I remember that Vede Hille was one of them. Who else? I am doing the Project Lo pages now, but I'm having to cut and paste from the only show I have a playlist for, the Brass City Records show. I'll assume the playlists were the same for all the Lo shows until I hear otherwise. And these, don't EVEN get me started on these: The Urban Muse - Denville, NJ - November 5, 2003 Quiet Storm Coffeehouse - Denville, NJ - November 5, 2003 Beachland Ballroom - Cleveland, OH - November 8, 2003 Phantom shows that no one went to. Drives me nuts! Why oh why oh why didn't I do this a long time ago, and keep up? I'm not very good at this being a fan business. Sigh. (overview: http://www.webhostfreaks.com/fantastico.php) Whereas before I only had a sliver of space on web sites (such as teemingmillions.com) now I am the god'o'webmaster. It's like giving the Beverly Hillbillies an empty mansion and a full line of credit at a department store to play with. The new Happy site is a blank page, and since it's not open I can do anything I want, so I've been installing programs left and right, just to see what things are and what they do. Most of it's way out of my league and range. I don't need any of the web commerce, blog, customer support, mailing list, bulletin board or many other programs. A Guestbook might be nice, though they're kind of silly, and are subject to hacking from what I hear. Some of the things that might be useful to me don't seem to work (I've tried 4 different installations of "Gallery" and not one of them has worked for me. I don't like the others either. Which is a shame because I would like to have a gallery for Happy live photos, not just mine but other people's too). The Content Management programs seem like overkill for my needs, but some aspects could be useful, but I'm not sure which programs would be good to use. I have the *content* of the site, or at least, the live part of it, close to being "done" (it will never be done, there will be things to add, and updates whenever Happy performs live again). At least, the end is more on the horizon than it was a week ago. I have a few more entries, some code to fix, and a whole pile of real-life photos to scan. Now I'm thinking, it just doesn't look very classy. That's where my lack of design sense comes in. Call me clueless. I most certainly am. I definitely have no sense of style or design. Playing around is fun and frustrating at the same time. Anyone who *does* have a clue, if *you* were building a fan web site from scratch, and had access to Fantastico, what would you do? You can email me privately if you want. That would be best. I was going to take my question (not that I know enough to ask many questions) to someplace better suited, but then I thought, there are geeks here and they're Happy fans. How much better-suited can I get? Happy's album is on the horizon. She may or may not get a whole spate of new fans. Whether she does or not, I intend to be ready (also of course, fans to date should get some use out of what's coming). Sorry Ode, OFOFUM knocks you off the list. Interesting choices Ethan. Some are right-on-the-edge favorites, like I'm Not Awake I'm Not Asleep and Under and Over the Brink. I had to slap on headphones to give a quick listen to Number One to remind me what the song was. It all came back to me "Now love and life and I we don't get along, so help me be strong where I don't belong." I also think of it as the "clays maray" song. When Mike, Jeff and I were doing the lyrics project, one of them had a line with that phrase in it. When I sent the lyrics to Happy to go over and correct, she drew an arrow to that and wrote "what the hell's a clays maray?" The line is actually "The way's away from the craze we're in" :) What a gorgeous little song. Thank you for making me listen to it again. You had The Issue Is on your list. Just yesterday I found a letter from Happy where she had typed up what inspired that song. Just so it doesn't get lost in this Subject line (and to make it easier to find in a search) I'll post what she wrote in a separate post. I've never liked that song on the record, but live it's amazing. Present was what seemed to be a very large family and her boyfriend. She fell to the floor and the family gasped in horror while the boyfriend tried to revive the girl. Someone claiming to be a nurse, came running from another dinner party to check the girl's vital signs. She screamed "Her heart has stopped!" and immediately began CPR on her. I watched as the boyfriend and family members panicked, with tears streaming down their faces. The girl's face was so lifeless and peaceful, while the living members wailed. The looks on their faces (especially that of the boy's) were of helplessness and despair. The paramedics arrived and shortly thereafter, it was announced that a pulse had been detected. They took her out and drove away, while the rest of the family wandered out to their cars in a daze. I never found out if the girl was alright or not. I only know the impression it had on me. The family members were on the brink of devastation due to her "clinical death," but she was only at peace. All I can say is, this event made me realize that death is not the frightening thing at all. It's surviving someone *else's* death that's scary. As I drove home that night, I listened to whatever was in the tape deck, which happened to be "Dreams Are"...my studio copy of the yet unreleased song. The mood of the song somehow pushed me to go home and write "The Issue Is." In it, I make references to "steel pieces in her arm," and this applies to the typical hospital stay of a critically ill person (I.V.'s , life support machines, etc.) These are all frightening images for the ill and their loved-ones, and force them to face their questions and fears of death. I really hope that Musical Box comes back to the Bay Area. I would love to see them. Thanks Vickie for your post! I remember that Midnight Special show with Genesis well. I knew Genesis pretty well at that point, at least from the point-of-view of their music. That was the first time that I actually saw what the guys looked like. I had a copy of Nursery Cryme but it had no pictures of the band. Besides Gabriel, they all looked like a bunch of normal guys. The music they made was so fantastic, not to mention the very interesting album cover art, I expected them to all look like Bowie or something. I used to read Melody Maker (UK) and Circus Magazine (US) religiously. At that time both music papers were focused on all of the great new music coming out of the UK like Bowie and Yes. I read a brief blurb in Circus that said something like "Do you wish that King Crimson were still doing the music they used to do? Do you want a band that is going in a creative direction like Yes? Then check out Genesis." And then they had an endorsement from Keith Emerson saying something along the lines of "these guys are great". So my friend, that turned me onto King Crimson and ELP, and I went scouring the obscure and cool record stores in Berkeley for "Nursery Cryme". We went to three or four stores and finally found it. None of the pretty knowledgeable music store folk every heard of Genesis. We had to dig through bins for a while before we found it. We were elated and ran right home to play the album. My initial reaction was that the music was good but I wasn't sure that I could get into the singer. I later played the album for my sister and let her borrow for awhile. She loved it! She then found out that "Foxtrot" was released and bought it and played it for me. It didn't hit me the first listen. She let me take it home and I listened to it several times over the weekend. The third time I turned down the lights and just really listened to the album. After that listen and really hearing "Supper's Ready", I was hooked on Genesis and Peter Gabriel for life. I agree with Vickie about how Genesis and Peter Gabriel can be important in the process of leading one to Happy. Her thread of Genesis to Gabriel to Kate to Happy is similar to mine. My thread would go like this: - - (9 years old) The Beach Boys ("In My Room" on my transistor radio '62) TO - - The Beatles ("I Want to Hold Your Hand" on my transistor radio and then The Ed Sullivan Show '63) TO - - The Moody Blues (listening to my transistor radio halfway falling asleep when "Nights in White Satin" comes on '67) TO - - Pink Floyd/Jethro Tull/Fairport Convention (shows at The Fillmore West '69) TO - - King Crimson/ELP ('70) TO - - Yes ('71) TO - - Genesis ('72) TO - - Kate (MTV "The Man with the Child in his Eyes" video '82?) TO - - Tori (MTV "Silent all the Years" '92) TO - - Happy (discovered Ecto web site and then Happy in '98 at 45 years old) - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Xenu's Sister Sent: Sunday, May 15, 2005 9:47 AM To: Ecto Subject: Re: Speaking of Peter Gabriel era Genesis... Bill asked: > Has anyone here seen the band Musical Box? Yes! Chris and I went to see their Lamb show a few months ago. It's the first time they'd been to Chicago, as far as I know, because I was lamenting not seeing the Selling England show because I didn't know about them (and Selling England was the first Genesis show I saw), and someone who overheard me said not to feel too bad, they hadn't come to Chicago for that one. I became a Genesis fan when I saw them perform on a show called Midnight Special. I'd never heard of them, but according to the TV Guide, Todd Rundgren was supposed to be on and that's why I watched. I was stunned. I'd never seen or heard anything like it. It's the kind of personal experience that means nothing to anybody else, but the gist is univeral to anyone who's had the experience. Before that I was a Top 40 teenybopper, just getting into things like Black Sabbath, the James Gang and Jimmie Spheeris. I was only barely starting to step out of the mainstream of pop and bubblegum. I didn't have a musical passion and I needed one. Seeing this odd man, Peter Gabriel I found out later, wearing these bizarre costumes, but, more important, hearing this music that wasn't like ANYTHING I'd ever heard before, was a revelation. It was complex and fascinating and utterly new to me. THIS was what I'd been looking for! I didn't even know it! It was pure magic, seared into my soul. The only other times I've felt like that were when I first heard Kate Bush (within 10 seconds I was intrigued, 30 seconds I was in love, and a minute in I was on a life-long love affair), and when I heard Happy. Of course. Being a Peter Gabriel/Genesis fan was what led me to Kate (and Chris!) which led me to Happy, so that night watching TV had a profound effect on my life. (I think I wrote this recently) I saw the original Lamb tour too, but remembered very little of it. In the first place, it was the most amazing show I've ever seen, before or since. Second, I hadn't yet gotten the Lamb album, so I wasn't familiar with the music at all. I didn't even know that it was a "concept" album, let alone what the concept was. See, I lived in a small town where it was an 80-mile round trip just to get to a record store that would be likely to carry something as obscure as Genesis (boy that sounds weird, doesn't it? but yeah, they honestly really used to be obscure). Of course I got the album as soon as possible and played it to death, learning every note and every word (it's still my favorite Genesis album), but by then it was too late. If I'd known the album well when I saw the show, I would have understood what I was seeing and hearing. As it was, it was just a jumble of costumes and lights and bizarre (but wonderful) music. Third, I was higher than one of Jeff's kites, and it was pret-ty good acid. For years I remembered the show as flashes of light, sound, images and it was, well, a jumble. Seeing The Musical Box re-create The Lamb show was wonderful because it all made sense to me, finally. We had terrible seats though, way up in the balcony and way over to the side so we didn't get to see all the the screen images, and when "Rael" was on the podium on the right back part of the stage, we couldn't see him at all. I only knew there was a podium there because I stood up and craned my body over a railing to see what was going on. I immediately sat back down, not wanting to be in the way of the people behind us. Still, it was 90% brilliant and 10% sounds great, but what's going on? If they ever come back, I'm going to make sure we get better seats. Vickie (Boring Old Fart Wannabe) This is a signature. I feel for Ode and wouldn't personally have picked it as the one to go, but the unearthly brilliance of OfOfUM sweetens the deal. > Interesting choices Ethan. It all came back to me Yeah, it's definitely a black sheep, but it's also one of the most yin/yang warped/romantic things I've ever heard. Not just anybody could have come up with that, and how great is Happy for being not just anybody? You had The Issue Is on your list.
