(sigh) i'd have to say `i'm with stupid' was probably aimee's weakest album. but, that said, if you only liked one song on it, you probably won't be utterly thrilled by the rest of her work. ;) i haven't heard forgotten arm yet but now i know it exists, it's on my list. - -damon - -- dl+ecto@usrbin.ca: protecting my real address since 2002 (too late!) > EWS starts here! < ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 May 2005 01:22:33 -0400 From: DanStark <2005.carnivore99@verizon.net> Subject: Re: 2005: jorane, aimee mann, emiliana torrini I happened to catch Aimee Mann being interviewed by Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols on his brilliant Jonesy's Jukebox show on Thursday - www.indie1031.fm . I really wish I had recorded it, but I didn't realize how funny and memorable it would end up being until much of it had already elapsed. Aimee played several of her songs live, and the interview went in some unusual directions. I expect there are copies floating around for those who are inclined to hunt for it. If you happened to find one, please let me know as I wouldn't mind hearing it again. This morning's _Newsday_ carried a short obituary for Eddie Barclay (nee Edouard Ruault) - yes, the flamboyant French producer and record label mogul (whose self-named label is now NBC-Vivendi-Universal property), who brought lasting fame to Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, Yolanda Gigliotti (a/k/a Dalida) and Bernard Laviliers among others (he also gave another French idol, Mireille Mathieu - of whom I was a fan in the late 1970's - a big boost by producing her debut). Dear Geoff, Mark and Andrew, Thanks for your replies on my question and my post. Part of why I asked the question was because of the comment Vickie made about how she would feel about Genesis reforming (with the classic line up of Gabriel, Hackett, Banks, Rutherford and Collins). I actually have the sense that seeing Musical Box would be more magical and nostalgic for me than actually seeing a reformed Genesis. I don't think any of them are really that into their old music that much. In reading interviews with members of the classic Genesis line-up over the years, they all seem to feel that they have done better music since then that 1973 to 1975 era. Those days, from their perspective, were their youth and apprenticeship and that they grew up as men and musically from that point on. I still feel like the music that Genesis was doing then was some of the most interesting and creative music and lyrics that I will experience in my lifetime. I totally agree with Andrew's comments about the storytelling on songs like "Get'em out by Friday" and "Harold the Barrel" let alone "Suppers Ready" or "The Lamb". Maybe a tribute band such as Musical Box, that is so faithful to the original spirit of the music and stagecraft of Genesis, has rekindled the classic Genesis band members' interest in their groundbreaking and magical music. All the best! Bill (trying to keep up with Ecto posts and replying as he can) P.S. - BTW Andrew, you are sounding like a BOF and I know that you a good deal younger than me. ;-) FWIW, I don't think that anyone is making music like that anymore either. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Dr G.T. At the Royal Albert Hall a couple of years back when they were recreating the Selling England... Tour - where they were joined by Steve Hackett for the encore - and just three weeks ago right here in Cambridge when they were doing The Lamb... Tour. As Bill says, they do minutely detailed faithful recreations and are absolutely brilliant at what they do. I'd recommend anyone to "take a little trip back in time" with them.
