In the center is located her singular voice, whose range is impressing again also here. The instrumenting essentially covers key boards, guitar and a little Percussion. Happy Rhodes shows up in music very versatile: gentle Songs like "He wants come", schwermuetiges [of heavy mood] like "Temporary and Eternal", in addition, already quite bizarre sound experiments like "Cohabitants". And again and again the sudden change of the low into the high registers or in reverse, contributes much to the fascination of the Songs. For Kate Bush fan seriously recommended! ============================ and ============================ The American singer Happy Rhodes is hereabouts almost unknown, which might be above all because of the fact that of her about ten CDs none is available in Germany. And also in the USA meanwhile only her current album "Many worlds are born tonight" is available. A shame, because it concerns one of the most impressing musician personalities of the nineties here. Her vocal range is amazing, in high registers sounds it like Kate Bush, in low registers reminds it of David Bowie. After she was affected on her earlier CDs mainly by Kate Bush, she developed herself further clearly on "Many worlds...". Or differently expressed: thus would Kate Bush today perhaps sound, had she not after "The Sensual World" shifted into musical reverse gear. And where Happy Rhodes previous albums rather into the category "prog related" fall, it a really progressive work submitted here. "Many worlds..." takes up a multiplicity of influences, from TripHop to Ambient, and connects these to a homogeneous whole one. Samples are frequently used, particularly from David Torns "Sonic Textures". Stylistic can hardly be described this music, be heard and experienced one must it simply. For me it was one of the high points of the yearly 1998 anyhow. American singer Happy Rhodes is practically unknown here, which is mostly because not one of her more than ten CDs is available in Germany. Even in the USA only her latest album "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" is available. This is too bad, because she is one of the most impressive musicians of the '90s. Her vocal range is stunning, in the highs she sounds like Kate Bush, in the lows she is reminiscent of David Bowie. While she was chiefly influenced by Kate Bush on her earlier CDs, on "Many Worlds..." she has definitely developed further. In other words: maybe this is what Kate Bush would sound like, if she hadn't regressed musically after "The Sensual World". And while Happy Rhodes' earlier albums would fall in the "prog" category, here she has presented a truly progressive work. "Many Worlds..." displays a plethora of influences, from Trip-Hop to Ambient, and brings them together into a homogenous whole. Samples are liberally used, most often from David Torn's "Sonic Textures". Stylistically it is very hard to describe this music, you really need to hear and experience it for yourself. In any case, for me it was one of the high points of 1998. In case anyone wants a taste, the CD is available for example at CD Universe, and there are a few sound samples there. ======================================= Thanks meth! In look and sound, probably the most "ecto" artist of this entire >list and most likely seen already by a few people here. I'm going to second the recommendation for Story of M. I reviewed their CD last year and I loved it (http://www.collectedsounds.com/cdreviews/theselittle.html) Here's the text (so you don't think I'm plugging for hits ;) ) This is another one of those "headphone" CDs. Though the music is pretty amazing to the naked ear, with headphones it will blow you away. The Story of M's music is in the same realm as your Trespasser's William, Fiel Garvie, Mazzy Star, etc. But some of their songs are a little bit "cleaner" for lack of a better term. I think of that shoegazer music as being fuzzy and though some tracks are like this, at times they also sound a little like Dido ("Heaven" and "High"). "Sailor" is a true shoegazer song. Gorgeous, full, with lots of sounds that you'll want to catch. I also really dig "Medicine". It reminds me of Portishead. The music is complex using several instruments including piano (Rhodes and regular), guitars (acoustic and electric) bass (stand up and electric) synthesizers and even tambourine! Emilie Berstein's voice is heavenly. It purrs and hollers in an equally beautiful fashion. If you like ambient, trip-hop, pop, you should check out The Story of M. After I emailed Emilie (lead singer) to tell her I had posted the review she wrote back saying that she had just recently heard of Tresspasser's William and loved them. I was amazed that she had not heard them until well after this CD was released. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 May 2005 09:48:41 -0400 (EDT) From: Bernie Mojzes Subject: Re: German translations please oh please? In particular see sections 2 and 4.b of http://www.register.com/dispute-policy.cgi which talk about registration in bad faith. I'm having a bit of trouble deciphering the legalese, but I think if someone contacts register.com directly there's a chance this could be resolved at the company Terms of Use level without needing to bring in a lawyer or the courts. It will probably help if Happy has trademarked her name (as ridiculous as that sounds) but even that might not be necessary, as she's clearly been using that name for business purposes for an extended time. I agree... I think the most important thing is that a Google search for "Happy Rhodes" gives you auntiesocialmusic.com as its first result. (Though personally, I think Happy should have used happyrhodes.net as her primary address... I wonder how many people have typed in "antisocialmusic.com" by mistake!) - --Sue ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 May 2005 17:51:38 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: About happyrhodes.com - --- Larne Pekowsky wrote: > According to whois, happyrhodes.com is registered > through register.com, and they don't seem to care > much for squatters. Yes, and if need be we could always produce my radio show tapes, meth's radio show tapes, and gaffa/ecto archives. :) I've forwarded that to Happy since it was a public, ecto post. That's very heartening to hear. It also helps that behind-the-scenes, it's been fairly well determined that "Happy Rhodes Enterprises" does not exist in Canada. (Thanks!) Vickie This is a signature. His web page hasn't been up in ages, but I did visit it once or twice and it looked like his nickname was Happy Rhodes. If he were actively using the domain, that's one thing, but he hasn't used it for a long time (I don't even know when it went down) and he hasn't put anything up since he renewed the domain a month or so ago (it was due for renewal the 26th of May, I believe). So, bad faith...registered? No, probably not. Renewed? It looks like it to me. This is a signature. It's a friendly signature. But it doesn't like seeing SPAM next to its owner's name. Tired of spam? I'm going bonkers) Sometimes, I just feel like it. I'm trying to get the happyshows site in halfway decent shape before opening it, and announcing the mailing list (yes! thanks to Jeff there will be a smoe mailing list for people who want to trade or just download live shows) and I can't believe the number of shows Happy's done that I have NO or very little information for. She hasn't done that many frickin' shows, yet I'm bogged down in the search for info. How did it happen that little of this info got mentioned in ecto? How did it happen that, if it did, I was so oblivious that I didn't write any of it down at the time? God I'm pathetic. How do Grateful Dead fans who keep track of shows manage? How do Tori fans? If you went to (or, hint, performed at one or more of) these shows, PLEASE help me. I need dates (in some cases), confirmation that there were indeed 2 shows (in some cases), and set lists set lists set lists, including what songs were encores, if there were openers and who was with Happy (in all cases). == Mann Theater (opened for 10,000 Maniacs!) Date? 1992 Who else played? What did Happy perform? Who was with her? == The Bottom Line (Required Listening series) - February 24, 1995 (2 shows??) I know who else was there (Pete & Maura Kennedy, Kyle Davis, Barbara Kessler), but who all was in Happy's band? Were there 2 shows that night? I have a set list for one show. == Troy (Music Hall?) - Troy, NY - October 25, 1996 This got a phantom mention in my old playdate list. I didn't know any more about it then than I do now. I remember I was very upset when I couldn't make it, so I blocked it out of my thoughts and memory. == Wire(?) - Philly(?) - 10-99(?) What the heck is this? I found a mention of it in the Ectoguide. == The Bottom Line - with Gongzilla - July 2, 2003 (2 shows) I had no idea about this one, and came across a mention of in an old concerts listing. == Ectofest 1999 Who are the people playing with her? Besides Bob, I know Bob. == YesFest What was the venue, and what time did Happy go on? == Bottom Line - New York, NY - November 4, 2003 (2 shows??) I just found a mention of this in an ecto digest. WHAT? That was when we were still getting the new apartment together with the idea that Happy might be staying with us, and I just wasn't paying that much attention to anything besides Toledo, Kenosha and Chicago. I still don't have set lists for the Toledo, Chicago, and some other shows not mentioned, btw. I have tapes of those shows, I just need to get the technology hooked up and listen to them and write then down. However, if you're reading this and you have a nice little text file that you could mail me, I would be very greatful. Yes, I did used to have them. They're stuck inside a forlorn hard drive a few feet away from me. There's no way I'll ever get information on any pre-Warpaint shows, and I've pretty much given on the Project Lo shows. There are too many to keep track of. I very much would like to get all the info I can for the 1992-2005 Happy Rhodes live shows though. Lastly, if you wrote something up and/or have photos of any shows Happy did anytime, please get in touch. I'd love to put them up. I already have a smattering of photos ready to go. There are several "in concert" photos that seem to be from live shows, but I have no idea what shows they're from. I've come across many ecto posts that said "photos of the show here" but when I click on the link, it's dead. Where are those photos? This doesn't have anything to do with a Happy show, but I'm still curious. Michael Curry, you wrote a post to Really Deep Thoughts about a Milla show at the Tinker Street Cafe. I've seen it several times, especially when I search for Happy Rhodes/Tinker Street Cafe or Happy Rhodes/Woodstock. It's a wonderful read, but more than a bit frustrating, because you say that you met Happy and Kevin and say, but I talk more about that in the post I sent to ecto. !! I can NOT find the one you sent to ecto. Do you still have it? I want the long version. Your description of the Tinker Street Cafe helped me picture it while putting together the informaton for the show. Thank you. Vickie This is a signature. It's a friendly signature.
