Alright, here are some artists seen and heard from the left coast, currently on the radar... Esquimaux. "Girlie" twee, fuzz pop that recalls Bon Voyage, Scheer, and Velocity Girl. They're led by Heather Brown who occasionally does backup vocals for Gary Jules as apart of the Group Rules. Favorite track so far is "Warm Summer"; first full length out soon; plans of recording with Eric Melvin (NOFX) scrapped. http://www.esquimaux.net/ Richard Swift. He's been around for awhile but I don't think he's been written about yet... Undoubtedly one of the best singer-songwriters in town, his music hearkens back to the good old days with reasonable comparisons to Tom Waits, Burt Bacharach, and Leonard Cohen (making him undoubtedly a companion piece to your Rufus Wainwright collection). http://www.richardswift.us/ Summer At Shatter Creek. They recently put out one of the best records of the year so far with "All the Answers". They tour America in June. Don't miss them. http://www.summeratshattercreek.com/ Space Mtn. Reminiscent of The Breeders, Juliana Hatfield, and Belly, they're slowly but surely building a big following of indie-rock kids. Lead singer Dina Waxman is magnetic, aggressive, and best of all, never takes herself too seriously. They hit Eastern shores soon with the equally tasty Let's Go Sailing. http://www.spacemtn.com/ Summer Darling. Probable influences lie in indie pop magnates Modest Mouse and DCFC, but occassionally bring washes of shoegazer into the fold. Their manager is a good acquaintance so treat them kindly. http://www.summerdarlingmusic.com/ Susie Suh. I've had her album for a few months but skipped through it pretty quickly. It's fair contemporary folk/pop developed in the capable hands of Glen Ballard that fans of Vienna Teng and Rachael Yamagata will probably get into. I fear she'll do the full-band thing soon when promoting this record. She's better sitting all by her lonesome. http://www.susiesuh.com/ The Lovemakers. Hands down my favorite band out of the Bay Area right now. Signed to man-of-the-moment Kierszenbaum's new label Cherry Tree (alongside Feist). One of the best live bands you'll ever see. I kid you not. http://www.thelovemakers.com/ Minipop. Perhaps the second best band out of the Bay Area. For fans of Rilo Kiley, Pony Up!, Eisley, and similar female-led synth-driven indie rock. http://www.minipopmusic.com/ Leerone. She had a CD release for her new EP "Hail To the Queen" last week. Likened to pre-major label Charlotte Martin. You decide. http://www.leerone.com/ Kate Earl. I've mentioned her before but since her album, "Fate Is the Hunter," comes out this week, she deserves another bump. Jon Brion, Wendy Melvoin, David Baerwald, David Scher all help her out on the album, produced by Tony Berg. She's going to be a star, I promise you. http://www.kateearl.com/ We Are Scientists. From Brooklyn via Los Angeles. One of five bands at this year's SXSW that made A&R execs duke it out. Look out for them. http://www.wearescientists.com/ Story of M. In look and sound, probably the most "ecto" artist of this entire list and most likely seen already by a few people here. Still unknown to most of Los Angeles, they've only recently started to hit the hipper clubs to reach their niche audience. I'd keep an eye for them if I were you. http://www.storyofm.com/ Bella Lea. East coast band that recently opened for The Good Life featuring Maura Davis, formerly of one of the best bands never to be fully adored, Denali. An easy 'One to Look Out For' pick for 2005, their demos are strong and Davis is destined for greatness. http://www.bellalea.com/ n.lannon. Also known as Nyles Lannon from the band Film School. Another Bay Area folkie. Imagine Elliott Smith with Powerbook loops and samples. "Demons" made my year-end top 2004 songs. http://www.nlannon.com/ Tom Brosseau. His new album, "What I Mean To Say Is Goodbye," is just plain gorgeous. Features Jon Brion, Pete Thomas, Benmont Tench, and Sara Watkins providing more instrumentation then he's ever had. Produced by Sam Jones of Wilco fame. His CD release is on June 7th at Largo and he'll have special guests John Doe, Jill Sobule, Angela Correa, and some other surprises that night. Tom also performs in the newish folk duo Les Shelleys with Correa. They've recently played with Sam Phillips, The Haden Triplets, The Chapin Sisters, and Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion and KCRW seems to like them. http://www.tombrosseau.com/ http://www.angelacorrea.com/ http://www.lesshelleys.com/ Some other notable out-of-towners who recently came through LA: Nerina Pallot, Elysian Fields, Sarah Blasko, Goldenhorse, Over the Rhine, Brandi Carlile, and Susan Enan. They all sounded pretty great. And I still highly recommend D.C.'s Laura Burhenn who'll probably be doing a proper West Coast/Southwest tour this summer. Also, NYC's Jaymay is already making news way over here without even stepping one foot around these parts. Seems Regina and Nellie have some competition. She sounds like Bic Runga to me. Other updates... Petra Haden's vocal translation of "The Who Sells Out" is out now on Bar None. It's brilliantly done, but understandably also an acquired taste. Special one-time only performances around the country are being worked out. Other recent releases from local noteworthy artists are Inara George's "All Rise," Mia Doi Todd's "Manzanita," Sylvie Lewis' "Tangos & Tantrums," Amy Cooper's "Water/Fire"... Imogen Heap did a secret show at the Hotel Cafe the other night. She played a few songs from her lovely new album and debuted the video for the probable first single, entitled "Hide & Seek," a great great song... Carla Werner returns to the States in June for a short stay before heading off to the UK with a new album in hand to shop around. The new stuff I've heard sounds a bit edgier, more modern rock driven... Eastmountainsouth disbanded a few months ago. Peter Bradley Adams and Kat Malich Bode are doing the solo thang... Angie Hart of Frente!/Splendid is going solo and writing her new album with Ben Lee. She'll make her solo debut on May 8 at the Hotel Cafe and again at Tangier in Los Angeles. Also performing on the Tangier night: Angela Correa (who I hear will be playing with our very own Paul Kim) and Jesca Hoop (what a lineup). You can also hear Angie providing vocals in the band Holidays on Ice (http://www.holidaysonice.com/) and Mono Band (led by The Cranberries Noel Hogan)... I get tons of email regarding Vixtrola. So here you go. Word is that they'll be selling their new record very soon through their website, which will be up within the week. Hold on to your seats. Also, I never posted my obligatory 2004 list: Bjork - Medulla (Elektra) Angela Correa - Correatown (Bed Pan) Teargas & Plateglass - Teargas & Plateglass (Waxploitation) Richard Swift - The Novelist (Velvet Blue) Tom Waits - Real Gone (Anti) Malcom Kipe - Breakspiracy Theories Vol. 1 (Merck) Anna Ternheim - Somebody Outside (Stockholm) Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands (Young God) Mountain Men Anonymous - Krkonose (My Kung Fu) The Autumns - The Autumns (Pseudopod) So much more to write about but I'll save it for the next post, six months from now... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 May 2005 10:16:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Bernie Mojzes Subject: Re: Van der Graaf Generator Day! strangely enough, i've found myself listening to a lot of VdGG the last few weeks. i'm intensely jealous... any chance they'll find their way across the pond? brni On Fri, 6 May 2005, Adam K wrote: > Tonight, on the South Bank, the earth cracked open and spewed forth > molten noise, the musical equivalent of a human scream echoing throught > the Royal Festival Hall and up hundreds of spines. I first heard of them after their last tour (in fact, the day after their Philly concert), and had one of those epiphanies - this was the type of band I wanted to be in. The band members show up regularly as characters in Steven Brust's novels. Anyway, this just in: * BOILED IN LEAD announce a new lineup. Original lead singer Todd Menton and guitarist Dean Magraw bring the group to a five-piece, alongside continuing members Robin "Adnan" Anders (drums), David Stenshoel (fiddle), and Drew Miller (bass). Singer/guitarist Adam Stemple (in the band since 1993) is no longer performing with BiL. This move brings the "classic" 1986-1990 lineup back together, with new material and expanded possibilities in the 5-piece format. The new BiL will make its debut Sunday June 5th at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. More info at the band's website. http://www.boiledinlead.com/ for samples. I may not have much to say to their postings, but I do want everyone to know that their posts are read, appreciated, and very often filed away for future reference. If you post something and no one or few people respond, don't think no one cares. Some topics garner a lot of flurry and others just get read and nodded at and quietly appreciated. There have been so many amazing posts that haven't received one response, or hardly any. That's sad, but I'm to blame too. I don't have much interest in other artists at the moment, but I'm deeply greatful that other people do. It keeps this list alive. Vickie (also deeply jealous of Adam) This is a signature. It's Mother's Day? Oh my. My mom died in 1982, and it would never occur to my son to call me on Mother's Day, so today has been just like any other day. Now I'm trying hard to think of Mother songs and not having much luck. I think my favorite would be "Mother Stands For Comfort" by Kate Bush. My favorite song about a wicked stepmother is "Closer" by Happy. I love another one by Kate, "Reaching Out," which a lot of Kate fans can't stand, but I adore. I belive it's about her mum, unlike Comfort, which always reminds me of The Dead Zone. Vickie This is a signature. It's a friendly signature.
