Kia ora Gabriel, thanks for the fascinating insights to Mylene's new album; I will re-read it whilst listening, you are illuminating! I'm actually really enjoying 'Avant que l'ombre', but I do have high expectations for her music so can be easily disappointed. I probably can't find Avant (or any Mylene album) as "deep and fulfilling" as you do because I don't speak French - I can know what the songs are about (I search out fan translations and pore over the lyrics), but I can't feel those meanings while they're playing. Translating the words, even reading the words in English as I listen, makes the experience theoretical and distanced. I can't hear and feel immediately. It's like listening to Cocteau Twins or DCD - I rely on the sounds, not words, and when the music is perky and poppy, it doesn't matter if she's singing of melancholie, mort or drawing sheep (which I now realise is a Little Prince reference). There are some Mylene songs I know almost like a French-speaker would, because sounds and meaning go so well together or there are many English words. For example, I love the lazy sunny ennui of 'California', which uses English and English-like words (aeroport, apathie, sunset, Marlboro, symphonie, overdose, freeway, road, asphalte, LAPD, Wesson), plus I sing the chorus as "sexy the sky of Californie" rather than "c'est sexy le ciel de Californie". But then there's "so sexy le spleen d'un road movie", and the knowledge that that refers to melancholy doesn't stop this English speaker from thinking of a squishy internal organ. > Redonne-moi reconnects with past subject matter > (ever since the b-side LAnnonciation) : some sort of childhood trauma > (according to the b-side mentioned and some other songs, it could very well > be that she has been raped as a child). In this song, this ghost floating > about doesnt plunge the writer into paralysis or simple observation. Mylene's attitude towards childhood is fascinating: she denies any memories before quite a late age, and it often seems in her songs that she is unwillingly ripped into adulthood, as though growing older is an abuse itself. Or maybe I'm thinking of the 'Plus grandir' video. > As far as the music is concerned, its true that things are very similar to > Farmers other records. One must not forget though that she is Frances > biggest selling artist and is thus quite a commercial artist. ... [snip]. Anyone expecting big changes in her > musical direction should have paid closer attention to her past records and > their progression from one another... It is true that really big artists are limited in how much they change. However, if a usually-debuts-at-no.1 American artist releases a new album after 6 years, I expect them to change a bit to keep up with current trends (unless they're appealing to an older or non-mainstream radio audience like Celine Dion or Norah Jones). Maybe there isn't that quick pace in French pop music (it doesn't sound to me like there is!), and maybe she has many fans who have been with her for a long time. She really is unusual! I had hoped that all countries had a unique unknown-outside diva, but it doesn't seem that way. Pole Folder - Zero Gold Best progressive electronica/dance album I've heard in a long time! Great vocalists too! Kirsty Hawkshaw, Sandra Ferretti, Shelley Harland..awesome! 02. Anneli Drecker - Frolic Once more, after all the Bel Canto releases and her Tundra solo CD, she did a fantastic job. Let's call this advanced 80s synth pop! Haha...get it!! ;-))) BUT A WARNING HERE...THIS DISC IS COPY-PROTECTED! http://www.annelidrecker.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108&sid=14c745e01a651e1b1767a03d37779cdc 03. Niyaz - Niyaz It's the new project from Azam Ali and Delerium producer Carmen Rizzo! "Vas vocalist Azam Ali, Axiom of Choice's multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian, and producer/remixer Carmen Rizzo have joined forces to create a globe-spanning sound that the trio calls "folk music for the 21st century." Known collectively as Niyaz, the trio's first eponymous release is a hypnotic, ecstatic, and eminently danceable album that represents the best of both traditional world music and electronic music. All three of these musicians have built impressive individual careers." http://www.niyazmusic.com/ This is a very good cd, world fusion / folk style! Azam Ali did it again! :D 04. Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself I don't think I have to say lots here, eh? She's unique! Both songwriting and voice! And I prefer her solo cds over Frou Frou! Great music!! ;-))) 05. Nicola Hitchcock - Passive Aggressive She's back with her second solo CD. Really different to the first one from 1993, this is more Mandalay style. She can do this awesome...hmm...miss a word in English....well yeah, how she uses her voice!! I love this cd!! ;-))) 06. Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright - Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright This cd is beauty!! So many differeent moods on it...Everyone who liked the movie (and soundtrack) Amelie (it's one of my fav movies) should love this! 07. Scout Niblett - Kidnapped By Neptune Didn't know her before, it's the first cd I tried from her! It rocks!! 08. Cinque Cento - Lake Shore Drive It's a great, chilled mix of electronica, bossa nova, lounge, whatever! Very relaxed cd for rainy afternoons like today! Haha... Next ones I wanna give a try: - - The Hermit - Wonderment "THE HERMIT is the creation of electronic explorer Hamish Thomson whose voyage through new musical landscapes has no borders. Time spent holed up in experimental recording sessions aiming to combine his talent as a percussionist and drummer with his passion for electronic music pays off with a sound that combines the freedom of technology with the sensual organic quality of traditional instruments. When the time came to record his second Nettwerk release Wonderment, Thomson welcomed collaborations with other talented musicians and vocalists. Guest vocal appearances include Martina Sorbara, Frazey Ford (Be Good Tanyas), Allison Shevernoha (Paper Moon), Shelley Campbell, CR Avery and Amalia Townsend (Sekoya)." http://www.hermitmusic.com/ - - Roseland (don't know the album name) "The second project ROSELAND will come as a surprise for most Vas fans since it features Azam singing entirely in English against a rock/ambient soundscape . Roseland is a partnership between Azam and prominent film composer/ guitar player B Tyler Bates. They met four years ago when Azam and Greg contributed their talents to a film score for Tyler, soon after which a collaboration between the three evolved." http://www.roselandmusic.com/ http://vasmusic.com/Bio's/azam_ali.htm Does anyone know when this Roseland cd will come out? How is it called? And my best live gig so far of this year: CODER23 - Coder23 are Front242 band members Richard23 and Patrick Codenys, they had a 2 hours DJ live set in Zurich, Switzerland on April 30th in the Club Dachkantine! The performance included a laptop with DJ software generating the tracks and FX plus a second laptop with sound software for live sampling. It was a fantastic night, massive bass, very danceable! Made me forget about everything for one night.. Ok...happy weekend to ya all!
