Well, in that case... ;) You just might want to check out his best-of from the early days, _1984-1989_, which draws from his three albums with his original band, the Commotions. ("Rattlesnakes" is from his first album of the same name, which is a bit of a cult classic, and it's included.) It's not perfect -- for instance, it noticeably omits "Hey Rusty" from _Mainstream_, which is one of my favorite songs of all time -- but for $5.75 used on Amazon, it's arguably hard to go wrong. A compilation of his more recent work is long overdue, because there's a lot of good stuff to choose from, but it hasn't happened yet. 1995's _Love Story_ might be the best place to start on the solo front, and Amazon lists it used for $2.27. What a deal! I can help you out if no one has answered you yet. By the way, if anyone happens to see and talk to Imogen during the Tori tour, ask her about Happy. Imogen loves Happy! I've got a signed poster that says "I think Happy's great!" I can't remember how Happy came up, unless I mentioned that I'd heard of Imogen via ecto, the Happy Rhodes mailing list. Here's a picture: http://wretchawry.com/Images/imogen.jpg If she still likes Happy, she might be interested in the new songs. (http://wretchawry.com/happy/samples). Tori once said she loved Happy too, though she probably wouldn't remember, and I still don't know if she was just kidding then. I know for sure I gave Tori several Happy CDs. Tori's way out of our price range nowadays, so I doubt I'll be seeing her in concert anymore. I still love her, and the new album, but I have lots and LOTS of wonderful concert memories to keep me for the rest of my days. Imogen being with her though...man, that's tempting. Tonight, on the South Bank, the earth cracked open and spewed forth molten noise, the musical equivalent of a human scream echoing throught the Royal Festival Hall and up hundreds of spines. It was, to put it mildly, one hell of a gig. VdGG, back together for their first full-blown gig in 30 years, ripped the roof off in cathartic roar of a set, having lost none of their collective power to disturb and enthrall. The taster for it all was an afternoon gig in the Cobden Club, a Victorian intimate venue in Westbourne Grove, by Chris Judge Smith, a founder member of an embryonic VdGG, who now tours the eccentric edges of the English music scene with songs a few miles from the stygian sonics of VdGG. Amusing, pointed and poignant, he looks like the headmaster of a public school, lean and balding, but acts like a drunken uncle with a few stories to tell. And life is all the better for it. The legendary Arthur Brown (the King of Hellfire, whose "Fire" is an alltime classic) stood in the audience. I heard him being pointed out by a Dutch fan, but at first mistook what he was saying. I was sure he said, "Look, there's Eva Braun" and I thought, "Stone me, she gets about a bit". But no, it was Mr Brown, looking damned good and quite imposing, mouthing along to every song. The set itself was short and sweet, and was enough to make me buy Judge Smith's latest on my way out. And then to the South Bank. Well, there's not much more i can say. People from 27 countries, apparantly, and a regular Tower of Babel in the foyer. VdGG rewarded the faithful with hair-raising, spine tingling stuff. If you've ever wondered what hell would sound like if the Furies formed a band and channelled every damned soul, this would be it. And it was majestic, epic, startling and, ultimately, breathtaking. My whole body shook with sobs, with laughter, and when the final note sounded I found myself applauding and laughing hysterically. Oh my god oh my god oh my god. Tomorrow I head west to see my grandchildren and revel in life. It makes a change. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 May 2005 15:59:46 PDT From: Subject: Patti Smith Meltdown Of some ecto interest: http://www.rfh.org.uk/main/series/202.html Patti Smith curates this years Meltdown Festival. I just hope the next album is another Solace or Fumbling. The stage was impressive, though I don't think anything can beat U2's Zoo TV tour for sheer flashiness. The tickets were steep, but the floor seats were well worth the price. We parked on a sidestreet too. No point in paying for parking at the BJCC. I would've liked to hear some more of her early work, too, particularly off of Solace. I would've loved it if she had played "Into the Fire" or "Shelter." I guess it's too much to hope for her to play material more than 10 years old. You're right about the crowd's enthusiasm, but I was kind of disappointed by the turnout. The BJCC Arena can hold about 19,000 people, and it looked like only about 8,000 or so showed up. I hope that doesn't discourage her from coming back. If you've got a recording of the concert, I'd love to hear it. I think Tori's starting a new concert tour. Hopefully she'll grace us with her presence. I've never seen her live before and I would really enjoy it if she dropped by. Eric ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #126 ***************************
