It's been out for a year over there in Europe, but finally getting a release in the States. If you love your late 70's/early 80's punk and new wave, and you dig bossa nova and lounge, this could be right up your alley. They've been playing tracks on KCRW a lot over the past few months, and I heard them do a set in the studio, and I loved it. It's two french producers redoing songs by XTC, PIL, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, etc. in a lounge style with mostly female vocalists. the past few weeks, I've seen Jorane (finally!), Angela Correa (local artist with whom i might actually play cello), The Weeds (basically Emily Ana Zeitlyn), and Kinnie Starr. Gemma Hayes was doing some low key shows around town while mixing her album with nigel godrich, but she cancelled the one i went to, and i couldn't make the others. Jorane. 1 complaint. I wanted to see her with the full band. But I was still glad to see her live. Her new stuff with the english lyrics doesn't quite work for me...I think it's the francophonic pronunciations that accentuate the fluffiness of the lyrics. I didn't realize that she'd only picked up the cello 3 years before recording Vent Fou, but seeing her perform, I thought that I could detect little something lacking in style and technique and ability....don't get me wrong, she rocked the poop out of the cello, I just didn't see the same seasoning in her playing like i've seen in Stephanie Winters or Lili Haydn or any number of other professional string players. Michael Brook was in the audience, as was Lisa Germano, but daniel lanois couldn't make it. Kinnie Starr's show this past Saturday was thumbs up all around. The last time I saw her was on the scrappy bitches tour in '97 at the Iron Horse. Meth and Woj and JeffW were there...probably Mike Curry too. I remember being glued to her at the IH, and her stepping off the stage and going unplugged for her last song. That won me over. This time, she started off with the spoken word piece "Buttons" off of Tidy, and then did a few songs with tracks off a CD, then pulled out her guitar for most of the rest of her too-short set. She has a way with lyrics and cadence that mesmerizes, and the joy that she emanates while performing is infectious. She's opening for Feist today in San Diego before touring Canada. she'll be back in L.A. in June. Feist is not in L.A. on this current tour, but be on the lookout for dates all over the midwest and the east coast from her, including the Middle East in Boston. Oh yeah, if you liked Feist's first album, check out the Weeds. Very Feist-like. She/they are from Philly. http://www.theweedsmusic.org/about.html Two more things. MC Chris is touring. he's in L.A. later this month. I Want Candy! And, Vienna Teng is doing a residency every Tuesday at the Hotel Cafe. Kyler will be helping her on BG vocals at tomorrow night's show. Should be a sound to behold. While poking around on the net last night, I noticed that Vienna is opening for Marillion at the Birchmere. A nice opening slot. neal ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 May 2005 15:40:13 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: nouvelle vague Hi, Go to CDBaby and sample Prozak For Lovers.
