Just to note that, on Thursday evening, London was /the/ ectocentriccity place to be, with Katell Keineg, Shivaree, Willie Mason, Kathleen Edwards AND Alanis Morissette all playing at various venues around the town. And how did I rise to this occasion? I stayed at home with a cup of tea. I'm getting waaaaay too old for this, even if Ms Morisette's debut was better than anything by Led Zeppelin or Bowie. Or so they say. Today, Sunday, sees the appearance of the Observer's monthly Music magazine, a publication that amuses me, mainly for its sheer ineptitude This week, however, it published review for the new Van der Graaf Generator reuinion cd, "Present" , which cites Peter Hammill as "the greatest anti-star of rock; the theatrical leader of a British showmanship that gave us Gabriel, Bowie and Rotten". The review wraps up with "Music about death, decay and corruption has never sounded so alive". A pleasingly well written review, it has to be said, that then only gives the album 3/5. Over the page, a review of the new Oasis album, which indicated that, at least, it wasn't as bad the last two, gave it 5/5. Go figure. Meanwhile, through no fault of the magazine's, the biggest shock was a half-page ad for KT Tunstall, emblazoned with a quote from the respectable "Guardian": "All hail the new Janis Joplin". Such gut-wrenching hyperbole had me tossing up my toast and Marmite into a nearby bucket (a family heirloom, kept especially close for such occasions). I am assured that she is quite, quite, remarkable live, but from my position on the floor, where I lay supine with shock, I could reach out my hand and bring down not only her album but a handful of similar artists (and, with my foot, possibly a couple more) who do this rootsy altcountry/folk stuff as well, if not better than Ms Tunstall without the slathering, wildly inaccurate comparisons being heaped upon them. And, yes, it's all IMHO, but that goes without saying. Anna Maria Yea, the Vonda Shepherd thing I thought was a clever idea that ended up being executed rather poorly. I remember a gag in either Hollywood Shuffle or I'm Gonna Git You Sucka where a funk band followed a guy around and gave him his own soundtrack everywhere he went. The Vonda Shepherd inclusion in the 'cast' felt a bit like that...a greek chorus who would carefully spell out every emotion necessary, but who only knew somewhat popular standards and pop-songs. All that said, if I could have a funk band follow me around constantly, I would certainly not complain, assuming they quieted down during sleeping hours. Another song that I used to enjoy greatly, until it seemed to exist in heavy rotation within more film soundtracks than any other song I can remember is Etta James' "At Last". Seems like every slow-dance/diner-love-/love-making in every cheezy romantic-comedy in the last 5 years has featured "At Last". It's gotten to the point where I can anticipate the song long before it actually begins to play. And with no thematic end, I will rather just sign my name. That will help her overall rating. Here's what it's about. Indy isn't an mp3 player as such. It's like a search engine, but instead of finding web pages that someone's submitted to the search engine, and displaying them, it finds mp3s that have been submitted, and plays them. The songs are downloaded onto the user's computer, and then played. The listener rates the songs from 1 to 4 stars (OOH, IT'S PLAYING "WORDS WEREN'T MADE FOR COWARDS" NOW!!). If you rate a song 1 or 2 stars, it stops playing those songs and goes on to the next one. 3 or above and it keeps on playing. You can stop listening anytime, and go on to the next track, but you always have to rate songs before it'll go on to the next. The songs are stored on your computer, so it's a good idea to clear out your 1 or 2 star folder and figure something to do with the songs you give 3 or more to, or it'll eat up hard drive space up very quickly. There's no Mac version yet, but they're working on it. The developer said that a beta should be ready in about 2 weeks. A Linux version is coming too, I hear. Here's a screenshot of what the Mac version will probably look like: http://indy.tv/~ian/indymac_ss.png Right now they're in build 5 of version .01, so this is all VERY new. There are bugs they're working on, but the concept is solid, and a great idea. It's not net radio, it accesses songs on web pages (though the artist has to submit the songs. There's no spider like a search engine uses). It uploads directly from the web page, to the Indy listener. The Indy player is accessing songs that are on your computer. At no time are the songs on the Indy servers. Btw, I should have made clear that I submitted Happy's songs with her full approval and participation. 40 songs were submitted. So far I've heard Proof, The Flight, Words, I Say, Omar and Roy. It was wonderful to hear Happy. Oh yeah, I can play her music any time I want, but to hear her come out of a player where I didn't program it, is very cool. Vickie Tired of spam? Yahoo! She came up in 10 songs! During the time we were on the phone, he heard 3 Happy songs. An interesting observation is that he heard songs in the same order I did. Proof first, then Words Weren't Made For Cowards, then The Flight (not played one right after the other, but fairly close). He had to go then. If any ectophiles check Indy out, please pass on how long it takes for Happy to come up for you, and if you remember, make note of the songs and what order. I'm just curious. A mac version is definitely in the works. The developer said that they'd been getting a lot of requests and have speeded up the development on the mac version. I've heard lots of artists I like. Happy's the only one I've given 5 stars to, but in my 4 star folder is Ella Blame, Floriana, John Lewis Grant, Thomas Becker, Thelonious Monk and Ella Fitzgerald (! I know, I don't know who submitted them). In my 3 star folder: The Fifi Bastard, Cardinali Alessandro, Ear Reverends, Nathalie Ronce, The Guitar Man, Chop Chop Band, Fungii, and Samantha Murphy. I've been emptying out my 1 and 2 star folders. These songs add up! My 3 star folder alone is already 178mgs. Those with limited hard drive space who don't catch the fact that you have to manually delete the songs you don't want are going to be hurting for space after a while and not know why. Ouch. I have several songs that I have no idea who it is because the file names are stupid. I have "10_music_to_spy_to.mp3" but who's it by? I don't know. When it's playing the Indy player displays the artist name (submitted when the song is submitted) but once it's rated, Indy never plays it again, and I don't remember who it is, so there it is on my hard drive, no clue. Ecto artists should start submitting their songs. We can build ourselves an ecto Indy! (make sure you/they put their name on the file name and in the ID3 tags) Vickie Tired of spam? Yahoo! Since they had to be on a web page, I made a web page: http://happyrhodes.org/Indy That page and those links will change. I had assumed that the information in the player window would come from the ID3 tags, so I made sure they were all nice and neat. However, the information comes from the filename, so instead of a nice-looking Happy Rhodes - Warpaint - Words Weren't Made For Cowards You see HappyRhodes_Warpaint_WordsWerentMadeForCowards.mp3 Ooops. I'm changing the names and I'll be changing the web page and the links, to what I think is an uglier style (Happy_Rhodes_-_Warpaint_-_Words_Werent_Made_For_Cowards) but one that will look better in the Indy player window, since the underscores and _-_ don't show up there. Happy's not coming up for me anymore, but then, I haven't been able to use Indy for a few hours. It keeps shutting down. Hey, it's in early beta, it makes sense that there are several bugs to be worked out. I assume that since the whole point is to let people hear music they didn't know about, that after I'd given Happy several 5 star ratings, the software might have figured, ok, we know they like that artist, now we'll play other things. Maybe. The ratings system is the whole point of Indy, which is why it won't go on to the next song until you've rated the last one. I also assume that at some point here they'll expand their web page to feature artists that have been given high ratings. Maybe. > i have a sorta fav list from the Aural Gratification CDs: I didn't include anything from the AG CDs. I didn't think about it, but now that I do, maybe Kevin would need to submit those? She nixed some of my choices, and suggested others. Though the technology isn't like radio, the concept sorta is, in that I wanted people's attention to be immediately captured. Ra, for instance, starts so slowly I didn't put it on my original list. Happy did want it added so I will be adding it when I submit the next batch. > are any Find Me songs in there? (i still dunno what to pick > there, this Sampler is one CD where i like every track.) I didn't even ask Happy about any of the Find Me songs. The album is so far away (it's not even mastered yet) that it didn't seem like the right time to include them. If I were going to, I'd say "One And Many" and "Find Me" would work well. I'd never use "She Won't Go" because of the opening. If I didn't know Happy and I heard that grating noise, I'd be clicking 1 star so fast you wouldn't see my hand hit the mouse. I wouldn't make it 5 seconds into the song. Heaven knows I love the song, it's a favorite, but that's because I heard it first *knowing* it was a Happy Rhodes song and gaving it a chance.
