So Rachael's been back a week now from her exciting Caribbean Cruise Adventure, and apparantly the land is still moving slightly...making for an interesting stretch of gigs the last few days. A brief synopsis from the recovering cruise-ee herself is below (beneath that is an updated list of Spring tourdates): === **EXCERPTS FROM RACHAEL'S CRUISE DIARY** "The week I spent on the Olivia Cruise was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Not being one to enjoy relaxing very much, I was admittedly worried that when I wasn't busy performing I'd be painfully bored, at risk for buffet-addiction or uncomfortably pressured to don the tacky turquoise bikini I'd bought in wardrobe desperation at K-Mart the morning of my departure... Conversely, from the moment I arrived to my bittersweet disembarkation, the entire Olivia staff made me feel more welcome and appreciated than I have since my own Bat Mitzvah reception (the closest I'd ever come to this steady a stream of food, music and family). The first night there was a warm reception for the artists and staff, at which the the collective energy was so infectious and positive that I was completely distracted from the motion of the ship - jarring enough to cause even a ballerina like myself to lose my balance performing such simple tasks as bathing, embroidering sequins onto a T-shirt or decorating blank jeans with a Sharpie. Who knew arts & crafts on a cruise would be such an Olympic test of my equilibrium? Later that night a very giddy Melissa Etheridge performed an intimate solo set for 1800+ of us and blew everyone away with her powerful voice, lyrical honesty and impressive sense of humor....and that was just Day One! By the end of this very formative week I'd interacted with more fascinating, inspiring women than I could shake a bevy of feather boas at - including Bille Jean King, Chrissie Gephardt and L-Word creator Ilene Chaiken - who were all invited to participate in Olivia's Womens Leadership Summit - and been showered with more encouragement and kindness from peer musicians, crew and guests than I could ever convey without some serious poetic indulgence. I had overdue bonding sessions with several musicians onboard whom I'd met previously (Ellis, Edie Carey, Kristie Stremel, Nedra Johnson, Jen Foster) and was likewise introduced to the impressive musicianship and vibrant personalities of the other onboard musical talent (Suede, Mica Lee Williams, Mary Dolan, Anne E. Dechant, Stephanie Callahan). On one particularly intoxicating occasion we all performed in-the-round and sang/played on each other's material in a shameless display of collective respect and admiration. In short, one week after my very first cruise I'm no longer fearful of large quantities of water, socializing, moonlight, casinos or disco dancing; God bless Olivia, I've finally come out of a shell I was unaware I was in!!" Thus concludes the first-ever diary entry to be featured in a Rachael Sage Newsletter. We hope you enjoyed hearing a little inspiration directly from the glitterfrau's mouth :) BELOW IS AN UPDATED LIST OF RACHAEL'S UPCOMING GIGS; ENJOY, & HOPE TO SEE YOU OUT THERE! xoxoxo & booty, The Pirate Queens @ MPress === **BALLADS & BURLESQUE SPRING TOUR 2005 CONTINUES!** Wednesday, April 20 WaukTown Radio - 3pm Listen In! Don't though. But... It isn't that hard to fool the average American radio listener. Sometimes you hear only a bit of a song on the radio or you're driving along and not investing that much attention in a song. So it's no wonder you don't understand the meaning of songs or mishear lyrics. So if you want to be subversive you do what Steely Dan is notorious for-- you take a cheerful, upbeat arrangement of a song and stick depressing lyrics in it. On the subject of covers: One of my favorite records is Todd Rundgren's _Faithful_ where he tries to reproduce as closely as possible songs by the Yardbirds, Hendrix, the Beatles, Bob Dylan. It's not his interpretation of those artists, its a replication of those artists. I've never sat down and compared his versions to the originals song by song, but they sound awfully close. He can't get the vocals exact but that's to be expected. I'm not familiar with that album, but I've always hated covers like that, because, really, what's the point? I dunno. I'm with the multiple interpretations perspective myself. I've read books and heard songs where I have gotten very specific things out of them, only to have the songwriter or author tell me they mean something else entirely. Sometimes I see where they are coming from, and other times I believe my interpretation is better then theirs! I think of them as the vehicle for delivering the craft, but not the arbiter of how it is received. It specifies that it has to be freely available for download on an existing web server (so that it can grab it), and the copyright holder has to give permission.
