To the mind examples like the one from Meredith Monk and the one of Danielle Dax, artists with a monstrous talent and a passion by the authenticity come to me at the moment that, in spite of one already virtuous race, happen below the table of own and extranos. Another one of these lost treasures that, in spite of having talent and one long trajectory, a deserved recognition does not even obtain is the neoyorkina Happy Rhodes. Contemporary of Bjork (like her, Rhodes nacio in 1965), the musica of this lady denotes a great passion by the risk, particularly from the last decade, in which Happy takes a walk between exquisite pop a romantic one, ambient, and, but recently, trip-hop, single to mention three sorts. Its intelligent also varia lmrica from crude letters that speak of psychological solitude, traumas, suicide and cuestionamientos to a cold and automated society, to doublings science-fiction and fairy tales, in which the fascination of Rhodes with robots is perceived, the extraterrestrial ones, and the nocturnal creatures. Worthy of mention it is also his versatile and enviable voice, able to move from but under rank of Polly Jean Harvey, to but the high one of Kate Bush, with that Rhodes often is compared. The first discs of Happy Rhodes were compendiums of subjects made between 1985 and 1986. These works contained simple songs, in which the sintetizadores and the acoustic guitar alternated in subjects and they were combined in others. "Rearmament" and "Ecto", published both in 1988, followed the same tradition, although with a greater number of new subjects that already noticed the coqueteos of Rhodes with electronic music. Although these albumes gained to the young person a cultured pequeno to him of followers, Happy Rhodes would retire momentary, although not completely, of the musical scene, dedicating itself to record sporadic covers, some but lucky ones that others, like the version of the "Mercy Street" of Gabriel. Rhodes would break finally its silence of glorious way. 1991 an exquisite pop, but mature and complex electronic work saw be born "Warpaint" of that its previous works. With this work, Happy Rhodes I gain nonsingle new followers (among them Tori Masters and the ex--Swan Michael Tour, asi like a few Fans of the Masters, Kate Bush and David Sylvian), but also comparisons with Bush, Sylvian, Tindersticks, Morrissey, and there were even some that dared to compare it with The Legendary Pink Dots. Nevertheless, the cult of Rhodes was still very reduced. In 1993 they would be published the eipico "Equipoise", and one sublimates called compilation "Rhodesongs", an insolvent attempt to catapult to Happy Rhodes to the fame, that contained subjects of the discografma of Rhodes until that year, asi as a pair of unpublished subjects and one sublimates acoustic version of the "Ashes to Ashes", of his idolized David Bowie. The following year vis to be born the plus (if not the only) gray work of its precious race, "Building The Colossus! ", that was followed by the resignation of Happy Rhodes of the seal that habia sheltered until then," Aural Gratification ". Although Rhodes declared that the cause obeyed to its desire to look for a seal that gave greater projection him, many attribute the cause to the conclusion of one long sentimental relation with the president of this seal, Kevin Barlett, rumor to him that remains in the enigma (although of being certain, the rupture seems to have been friendly, since Barlett would collaborate in its later work). "The Keep" (1996), a contentivo of sides b and presentations in programs of published serious radio posthumously under Aural Gratification. In 1998, and already sheltered under Samson Music, Happy Rhodes it would break a silence of three years with which, ironically (given the error of "Building The Colossus") it would be his better work. "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight", an exquisite and dark work, with a sound sometimes near trip-hop (related, in my opinion, with the "Homogenic" of Bjork, but without the section of cords"). Delicious subjects like "100 years", "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight", "Tragic" and "Proof" show the peculiar vision of Rhodes towards this sort. These subjects are put in with stirring songs of etireo cut ("The Charriot", "If Wishes Were Horses...", "Winter"), making of this work an amazing passage that gave back to Happy Rhodes to its total vocal and musical form. Doublings and seducers beats are let oir throughout this work, although with a greater subtility than in "Homogenic". Although "Many Worlds" is its first massively distribumdo album in the United States, the album profit not to descorrer the mysterious veil that even covers this infraestimated jewel. The expulsion of Rhodes of the seal Semson Music, due to the division of this, prevailed to us to oir what Rhodes promised to offer us for this year. So far, we have left to hope that the next seal that the firm one reveals finally the mysterious brightness of this lost jewel. The discografma of Happy Rhodes with Aural Gratification momentaneamente has been discontinued. Nevertheless, "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" continues in the street. Look for this disc, adquiiranlo and you appreciate that hidden talent unjustly that it is Happy Rhodes. While looking through various unmarked (because I'd never need them, right?) backup CDs, I came across one that had 4 Happy concerts on it, entire shows in mp3 format. They're just audio, but they're REALLY big files, over 100,000mb each. They're not chopped up into individual songs the way I've done this in the past. Each is one huge honkin'big file. As far as I know, they're raw, with little or no editing. I haven't listened to them all though. These are the shows... Happy Rhodes live at Tin Angel (Philadelphia, PA) May 9, 1996 1st show Happy Rhodes live at Tin Angel May 10, 1996 2nd show Happy Rhodes live at Tin Angel October 12, 1996 1st show Happy Rhodes live at Tin Angel October 12, 1996 2nd show After putting these on my server I'm at 99% capacity of my disc space! As long as I don't add any other songs I can keep them on the server for a little while. My web host allows 60gb a month bandwidth for people downloading, so a few people can get these. I don't know that 20 people would all start downloading, but I can't take that chance, especially since I host sample songs at www.wretchawry.com too and I never know when someone's going to access them. If you want to download the shows, write me. I'll get back to you when I can (I'll be in and out until this evening) with the information you need to connect. That way I can keep track of who's getting them (just for my own curiousity) and I can keep track of my bandwidth usage. If it gets close I might have to hold some people off until the beginning of May. Vickie Tired of spam? Yahoo! Happy's a natural born comedian. She's not always "on" but she is in these shows in the bits I've heard so far. And the music, well, the music takes care of itself. For the May shows it's Happy, Kevin Bartlett and Carl Adami, still my all-time favorite lineup (not that I've disliked any of the other lineups). The ever-wonderful Kelly Bird joins them on backup for the October shows. She and Happy are a scream together. Though I lost many of my playlists in the Great Crash of 2005, I actually have playlists for these, they were on smoe. I don't follow baseball at all (for instance, everything I know about the Red Sox I just learned by having just seen the delightful Fever Pitch). Apparently today is my day for answering questions :) This is probably referring to the incident in the 1996 ALCS, when Derek Jeter hit a ball to right field. I have copied a description of what happened from Baseball Digest: With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter bit an Armando Benitez pitch to deep right field. Orioles' right fielder Tony Tarasco leaped up to get the ball, but it never came down. Instead it went into the glove of Jeffrey Maier, a 12-year-old Yankee fan and Jeter was credited with a home run as the ghosts of October made their annual Fall visit to the Bronx. Umpire Rich Carcia working right field saw no interference on the play although the call has been the subject of controversy ever since. Tarasco and the Orioles argued vehemently to no avail. - --------- (end of quote) I'm not sure what this has to do with being a bleeding heart liberal, although Jeffrey Maier was vilified for his interference. Playbacks showed that his glove reached over the fence, meaning that the ball could have and should have been caught instead of being a homerun. If you stood up and defended Jeffrey Maier at that time, you could (theoretically) be showing a liberal side. ==> Valerie - --- Xenu's Sister wrote: > I'm listening to the October '96 show and Happy > keeps making > references to a kid with a baseball and something to > do with the > Yankees and for some reason it has somthing to do > with being > Liberal (she makes a crack about not wanting to be > seen as a > bleeding heart lib, even though she is one...). Sort of, but not quite. In that case, it was a foul ball, not a home run - and the fan didn't lean over the fence to get the ball (although the Cubs player still should've been able to reach over the fence to get it). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Apr 2005 14:41:53 -0500 From: Doug Subject: Re: Any baseball geeks here? This sounds like a perfect job for BitTorrent! It's not that hard to make one, and it would solve your bandwidth problems. Do we have anyone with a bit of bandwidth to spare who would be willing to seed? Please speak up, let's see if this is feasible...
