"This was a great time of innovation for the Muffins and me." - Daniel Lanois July 2004 "The great lost New Wave album - moody, detached, heartbroken=8AI finally figured out how to digitize my old vinyl records this year and "Ice Age" was the first, and best, to jump the divide. Virgin, release this on CD or I'll start burning copies for all of Boston." - Ty Burr The Best CDs of 2003/The Boston Globe "Swimming", which breaks us into the album is not only some kind of ambiguous masterpiece but says as much as any one track can about the overall tone of the album. It's a beautifully slippery mood piece, set to a straggling syncopation, which bursts into carnal brilliance with the dank, liguid croon of Mark Gane=8AImpossibly catholic in form, the record's unifying thread is its strange, modern melancholy." - Dave Hill, NME, January 9, 1982 "There is no other band which emerged from Canada's fledgling punk scene of a few years ago which matters. With the release of their third album Martha and the Muffins not only prove themselves superior in their native land but reveal a musical and intellectual depth that is rare in rock'n'roll the world over. "This Is The Ice Age" is not only a brilliant musical work but stands on par with the music of artists like Peter Gabriel, Roxy Music and David Bowie." - James Muretich, The Calgary Sun, October 18, 1981 ____________________________________________________________________________ ___ THIS IS THE ICE AGE Ordering Information: CDs $ 18.00 each Price includes all applicable taxes, shipping & handling costs. Martha says it was one of her favourite MatM shows ever and thought the audience, vibe and venue were great. Mark agrees but reports he was so intent on remembering everything he was supposed to do that he wasn't relaxed until it was over and he could talk with fans. Both think the show had a raw intimate feel where neither one was sure what was going to happen next but the audience was totally with them on the ride which made it a one-of-a-kind experience. "We are absolutely staggered by the loyalty and support of our audience - those who were there at The Drake, some who come from as far away as Syracuse and Chicago, as well as everyone who watched the webcast from Paris to L.A.," says Mark. Special thanks to Graham Stairs for suggesting the idea in the first place, to Jeff Rogers, Mark Finkelstein and the staff at The Drake for their hospitality and professionalism and to our friends Marcus Vichert, Laurie Potts, Aaron and Andrea Badgeley, David Johnson and Stewart Stein for their personal assistance. A DVD of the live streaming of the show to the Internet was recorded off the webcam and will soon be available for sale as a limited edition "official bootleg". More details to follow soon. Maybe you only hear about these when you attend the concert. Are more and more artists doing these 'instant' cds? I was impressed by the DCD ones that someone here sent a link to (thanks). Are they usually better sounding than good audience bootlegs? In general, they're only sold at the concert itself, so no-one else usually finds out about it. > Are more and more artists doing these 'instant' cds? I was impressed > by the DCD ones that someone here sent a link to (thanks). Are they > usually better sounding than good audience bootlegs? Depends on the artist. If a taper-friendly band like the Dead or Dave Matthews were to allow Instant Live, I'd guess that the resulting CDs would be almost indistinguishable from a good audience bootleg. For an artist where one has to sneak in their recording equipment, and thus can't use the really good gear, there probably is a difference. That difference might only be audible on higher-end equipment; if you're just listening on a standard boom box, then you probably won't be able to tell the difference (barring something like the taper singing along). You could probably compare Cowboy Junkies recordings. They're taper-friendly, so assuming that you can tape on the same night that they're allowing Instant Live, you could compare an audience recording and an Instant Live recording of the same performance side-by-side (or ear-by-ear, as it were). /nm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Apr 2005 22:44:36 -0600 From: John Higdon Subject: Instant Live ( was Re: new Kristin Hersh live disc) At 07:10 PM 4/11/2005, Karen Hester wrote: >http://www.newburycomics.com/rel/v2_viewupc.php?storenr=103&upc=103-954762N > >I wonder how many Instant Live concerts she has put out. I'm in Colorado, where the band String Cheese Incident gets mentioned now and then. They're also mentioned in articles about Instant Live here: http://www.glidemagazine.com/news1003.html and here: http://www.pitch.com/Issues/2004-07-29/music/interview2.html The gist of the articles is that Instant Live is owned by behemoth Clear Channel. Clear Channel "bought the patent from the technology's inventors and now claims to own the exclusive right to sell concert CDs after shows". They're already going about having "arms twisted" in order to eliminate competition (which may soon result in less of the profits going to the artists). Now, apparently String Cheese Incident started their own company awhile back to handle ticketing and merchandise. Currently, this company "delays posting live albums for download until a few days after a show instead of a few minutes (as in Instant Live's model), so the band isn't squarely in Clear Channel's sights yet. But that would change if SCI decided to speed up the process." In other words Clear Channel, though Instant Live, thinks that it has the right to tell bands that they can't distribute their own music in this way...even if they've been doing such for years (though not quite as quickly). I thought the "instant live" things are soundboard recordings, mixed down on the fly? If that's indeed the case, then one would expect them to be better than audience recordings. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #99 **************************
