Often the first cut of a CD is the intended first single, and while I didn't notice this one at first, _Fall_ has really grown on me. I love the wavering background organ, the scat-style chanting (which makes me think of things Swedish for some reason). I don't care for Happy's deeper voice nearly as much as her higher voice, but it works well here. This song is such a sweet, relaxing experience. Now _Charlie_ I really could have lived without hearing, I'm almost ashamed to say. I have no idea who Charlie is, so it's hard to relate or feel any compassion. Happy works her musical magic well here though, despite the message of the lyrics. Her voice almost splits into a third pitch, higher than her deep voice but lower than her high voice. Interesting. The electronic voice processing which others here have lauded is, I admit, interesting, but it doesn't do all that much for me. _The Chosen One_ ...what can I say? The violins wrap around my ears and carry me away...the melancholy lilt to her voice evokes memories of earlier Happy pieces...delicious memories sung in that high-pitched voice which I love so dearly... However, part of the sentiment here seems a bit forced...I mean, after all, many men would consider Happy to be a "hottie". I'm sure she has no lack of men who are interested in her. Sure, finding the 'right' one is difficult, I'm sure, perhaps even moreso for a woman in her position. But there are plenty of women who have more claim to this sentiment than she does. Does anyone else hear Depeche Mode shortly into _Can't Let Go_? The electronic-sounding musical accompaniment makes me think of them. I hear a definite DM influence in a number of parts of this CD, though, not just this song...but hey, maybe that's just me. :-) I just love the funky sound of _One and Many_, especially when she gets to the "can't stop flinchin'" part....man, she rocks. Love the Native American-sounding backing vocals too... _Find Me_ strikes me as being very New Age-sounding, especially for a simple love song. The elegant, stark piano notes, the wind-sound in the background...this and more give the song an ethereal quality.... I can't tell what instrument, electronic or otherwise, creates the 5-note background tone that effectively acts as the "signature" for _Here and Hereafter_, but it's such a cheery tone that it always perks me up to hear this song. And the sentiment is so universal...I see this cut as having quite massive appeal, if only it could get the airplay it deserves. _She Won't Go_ was the first track to really catch my attention...on about the third spin. It still rocks me, but now that I appreciate the rest of the CD more, I find it hard to give this beauty enough of my attention. I say that even though my favorite Happy songs are the rocking, peppy tracks, as opposed to the sentimental, sugar-filled variety. :-) I assume that the "she" referred to is her inner self, and this is quite consistent with the running theme she's carried throughout her albums. This is a good thing...change is good, but so is consistency. It's good to see Happy back in fine form again. My thanks to Bernie Mojzes for helping me obtained a copy, signed, no less! :-) - --Doug "Instructions are for people who don't know what they are doing" - Bob the Builder ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Apr 2005 13:01:51 -0400 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: Jorane Radio Alert -- Monday 2 PM WNYC I see from the WNYC website that Jorane will be on the Soundcheck program at 2 PM EDT today, Monday. That's interesting, because I think it's one of the most melancholy and frightening songs Happy's ever written. I'm with Bill 100% on his interpretation (which Happy agreed with) which makes the song so very sad. > Now _Charlie_ I really could have lived without hearing, I'm almost > ashamed to say. I have no idea who Charlie is, so it's hard to relate > or feel any compassion. The thing about this song is, you must see the movie "Crumb" to get the full effect of the lyrics. The song is about the underground comic artist Robert Crumb's brother Charles, who participated in the documentary, but committed suicide before the film was released. I don't know if "I could have been Charlie" is meant to be from the point-of-view of Robert, or Happy, but there's certainly a lot of Happy herself in those "I"'s. > _The Chosen One_ ...what can I say? I'm trying to think of a quote from, I believe, Rita Hayworth that went something like..."Men go to bed with Gilda, but wake up with Rita Hayworth" meaning that someone who's a hottie on the outside might attract men, but that's not the sum total of the person inside. Since an entire psychology course could be based around Happy Rhodes lyrics, it has to be obvious that she's one complicated and deeply scarred woman. I disagree strongly with your last sentence just because it disregards the "girl" in "If I Ever See The Girl Again." I have to think about this more because I'm not answering or explaining myself properly. > _Find Me_ strikes me as being very New Age-sounding, especially for a > simple love song. Sorry to disagree, but I must here too. This song is one of the most heart-wrenchingly, gut-sockingly, desperately sad songs I've ever heard in my life. On the surface it's about a stranded woman floating in the ocean, desperate to be rescued but no one finding her, even though she knows they're searching for her. She's pleading that someone please find her while she's still alive, but in the end, she drowns before being rescued, her last thoughts focusing on when she was abandoned as a child. On a deeper level, it's (I believe) a metaphor about not being recognized as an artist. She hasn't said anything publically about this song, but I can't help but wonder if it might have been partially inspired by the story of Eva Cassidy (Happy knows about Eva), who died and then became famous, when it didn't do her much good. I don't know. It's a hard song to listen to, and I feel like crying every time I do. > I say that even though my favorite Happy songs are the > rocking, peppy tracks, as opposed to the sentimental, sugar-filled > variety. :-) I don't know, I think Happy only has 2-3 songs that could even remotely be called sugary, and I'd have to look but I can't think of any off the top of my head that are sentimental. There may be, I just have to cull through lyrics. Even "Here and Hereafter" has a dark streak in it. It mostly is a happy, jouous love song, but also talks about how loving too much can cause unbearable pain, and can even kill someone, if they love so much they can't, literally, live without that person. I did love what you wrote, so don't take my disagreements personally. Thank you for posting! Vickie Tired of spam? Yahoo! There weren't very many people there, and those who were seemed to be there for the headliner, the excrutiatingly awful Azita (we left after one song). I'm not very familiar with Jorane's music, so I can't provide a set list, but I enjoyed the show quite a bit. I loved her voice, and her cello, and her unusual musical style. Plus she's a lot of fun onstage. I'd love to see her with an audience who deserved to hear her (that is, into the music). She only got to perform a few songs. I wish she could have played for a couple of hours. She's very approachable and friendly and we got to talk to her a bit after the show. I told her I heard of her from an Internet mailing list called ecto, and gave her a Happy CD (Many Worlds), so if anyone sees her, meets her, and remembers to ask, I'd love to know if she's listened to the album yet. Probably not, but you never know. - --- Valerie Richardson wrote: > I see from the WNYC website that Jorane will be on the Soundcheck > program at 2 PM EDT today, Monday. > > You can access locally at 93.9 FM or online at wnyc.org. > > --Valerie Richardson It's on now. You don't check your e-mail, do you? :-) I wrote you a few days ago after you inquired from another ectophile. I have a very few left, because some ectophiles changed their minds, I guess, and I haven't heard from them since they first said they wanted one. (I'm not talking about you, Joe Zitt or Nadyne, I'm still holding yours). I put forth an offer to the Yahoo group Wrong Century, and didn't get one response. Either those people are on ecto and already got one, or they're just waiting for the album. I was thinking about asking in rec.music.gaffa/Love-Hounds, though I don't know there are any Happy fans left there. Vickie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hi, Vickie posted: >Here are Jorane's tour dates: > >April 2 Chicago, IL As Azita's guest, The Hot House >April 4 New York, NY As Azita's guest, Joe's Pub Actually, her Joe's Pub show tonight was as headliner, and Nell Bryden opened. I didn't see this note until just now, but we missed our chance to say hello to her so it's a moot point anyway. :/ The show was, in a word, ***amazing***. My mind went >>pop<< somewhere in the first third of her hour-long set. But I'm getting ahead of myself. woj and I got there not too long before the 7pm start time, but there was hardly anyone there so we were able to claim the table right up front and center. It seemed like most of the people in attendance were there to see Nell Bryden, since she is from NYC and brought a lot of friends along. She was okay -- pretty standard singer/songwriter girl-with-acoustic-guitar stuff, but she has a lovely gospel-flavored voice, so it wasn't difficult to sit through her set. (She even did a cover version of Joan Osborne's "Saint Theresa", which is ill-advised unless one has the vocal chops to back it up, but she definitely does.) Jorane was accompanied by an acoustic guitar player who also played pedal steel on one song. It occurred to me not too long into her set that she is what would happen if Tori played the cello. Not only did she sound scarily like Tori at many points vocally, but she plays her cello like Tori plays her piano, with a lot of sensuality involved. I'm afraid I didn't get to grab a set list, but I can tell you for sure that she played for an hour, and she played the three songs I was most hoping to hear: "Pour Gabrielle", "Dit-Elle" (albeit an English version from a film called _I'm Dina_), and an absolutely kicking "Vent Fou". (If my mind hadn't already blown by that point, that one would've done it for sure.) She also did a snippet of her cover of "I Feel Love" during the encore, which was amusing. :) She was delightfully goofy in between songs, too. If she's coming to play near you, GO. DO NOT MISS IT. YOU *WILL* KICK YOURSELF IF YOU DO. And if you do get to say hello afterwards, tell her a bunch of people were waiting to meet her in NYC, but she disappeared too quickly. :/ >April 9 Portland, OR As Andrew Bird and Laura Veins' guest, The Doug Fir >Lounge Should this say Laura Viers instead?
