She did a few dates recently in NY and CA (and at SXSW) with Kings of Convenience and fellow canadians Stars (I missed their two dates in L.A. last week because I was in Florida for a wedding). According to her official website, she'll be in Canada for a wee bit before heading back to Europe for much of April and May. There's a discrepancy between http://www.listentofeist.com and her new U.S. label, Interscope (Let It Die is going to be released next month here as well...who knew? I guess this whole "canadian" music scene explosion is the next new rock fad)'s website, which lists her as touring more than just the coasts of America in May. http://www.interscope.com/tour/index.asp?artistid=99459 I guess, check your local listings for more confirmed details in May. I'm sad that I missed her, and that I missed Kinnie Starr earlier this year...you bet your bottom dollar I'm going to do everything I can to not miss Jorane next week. Canadians roool! Only once has a domestic machine failed on me, that was years ago..and no, I didn't have a backup! But that was the lesson learned. Everyone's the same. It's unfortunate that this kind of thing still happens, given that in the digital sphere things are so easily copied - back in the day that wasn't the case and the risks were even higher. I'm sure lots of people have lost 'media' of some kind that they've cherished.. Most of my own are video-based, like the interview with Wendy & Lisa in Glasgow (Prince ex-band members) that I recorded and then wrote over with some stupid documentary. And also (even more tragic) a TV interview with the Cocteau Twins in which Liz actually spoke real English and Robin examined his beard. Again, taped over. These things will forever haunt me. I wonder if anyone else has any great 'losses'? We had taped Dalbello live at the Diamond Lounge in Toronto back in 1988. At the time we couldn't afford more videotapes, so we taped over it after we'd watched it. I'd love to see it again! We also loaned a collection of taped videos to a friend and never got it back. I don't remember what else was on it, but one thing was Susan Court's* sole video, for "Fundevogel". There have been others too I'm sure but those are the ones I think of when asked this question. - --Neile *Speaking of Susan, she just gave birth to her second child, a daughter this time. There's a picture of her with her husband and the new family member at http://www.photosprout.com/family/babyl/pages/mdlhosp9923.html. Sadly, her son Ronan isn't in that shot. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 14:02:13 -0500 From: colford@chlotrudis.org Subject: Dalbello (was Re: Taking a break) Neile Graham writes: > We had taped Dalbello live at the Diamond Lounge in Toronto back in 1988. > At the time we couldn't afford more videotapes, so we taped over it after > we'd watched it. I'd love to see it again! Wow, just the thought of seeing Dalbello live gives me shivers! I bet that was one awesome performance. I wish she would record again. Michael R. (When and how did Leslie Feist become the Next Big Thing(tm)??? Just five short years ago -- almost exactly, it turns out -- she was playing an omnichord in my living room. Things like this tend to blow my puny little mind.) It was a lot of fun. She and her band didn't exactly recreate the album on stage, which I appreciated. Her band consisted of a drummer, a trombone player (who also did some hand percussion), and a guy playing some keyboard instrument through a cabinet that I couldn't quite figure out -- it was in an antique-looking wooden case about the size of a spinet piano, but it produced synthesizer sounds and was the only possible source of the bass in all of the songs. They left Leslie alone on the stage for a good chunk in the middle of the set, and she accompanied herself on the same big red Fender guitar she'd played at our place, with all sorts of cool effects and looping going on. My only complaint about the show was one of my standard Joe's Pub beefs: the stage lighting. Or in this case, the nearly complete lack thereof. I don't know why the lighting guy at that place (which is a THEATER, for crying out loud) believes it's cool to leave the people performing on stage almost completely in the dark. For most of the show Leslie was the only person on stage even partially visible, and then only in a dim shadow of dark blue or dim green Varilight slotted to look like a neon sign across the street coming in through half-shuttered Venetian blinds. (At one point she seriously messed up a song because she couldn't see where her fingers were on the fretboard.) If it had been me up there I would have asked for more light, but then I doubt it would've done any good. The sound guy there tends not to listen to the performers, either. The music itself, though, was great. I wish she were doing more shows in the area -- I'd go see her again in an instant. I only wish I'd gotten a chance to say hello to her afterwards. I wonder if she remembers playing at our place. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 18:26:57 -0500 From: "Bill Adler" Subject: RE: Taking a break My most important files are all the MP3 I've ripped from my CDs. Though I see they offer unlimited storage space, but the download is limited to 120GB a year on $99 plan - which means if you ever need to restore from your Streamload backup, it will take you 6 years to get it all back! Well, I guess that's better than losing the stuff altogether :) 700GB is kind of expensive to backup no matter what. But as long as the data fits on one drive, I think the cheapest off-site solution would be to just get a spare hard disk, copy your data to it and ask some friends to keep it in their cupboard... I'm thinking of doing just that. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #87 **************************
