There is perhaps hope... you can get an assessment of all the files that can be recovered from http://www.ontrack.com/ and they can do it over the internet. I am fortune that I live close enough to take my drive to them. The university where I work takes all their down drives to "ontrack" and have gotten data off discs submerged in water for a week, with a bullet hole(which I knew what that was about) or a whole host of other nutty circumstances to appear to be hopeless. I still have my fingers crossed that they will be able to retrieve at least the stuff I probably can't replace. I wish you luck. sherry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2005 07:26:28 -0500 From: "Michael Colford" Subject: Paul Hester, drummer for Crowded House has died I was surprised and saddened to read about Paul Hester, drummer for Crowded House was found yesterday after an apparent suicide. He was a terrific musician and live performer in a talented band. It's very sad. Read more here: http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/03/28/hester.suicide.ap/ Michael R. When I said "take a break" I didn't mean unsubscribing from ecto or really ecto itself. Just taking a break from technology. I should know better though. I can't not use a computer at all. The entire world at my fingertips and I'm going to walk away from it? No way. Yesterday I was depressed, but today I'm just irritated at myself. I have perspective in that it's a minor thing compared to, well, just about everything else bad that could happen. It's a lesson learned. Backing up is something I've been "meaning to do" when I "get aroundtuit" so the only reason I shared what a dumbass I was with ecto is to get some of you gentle readers to backup your most important stuff. Techy stuff for those who might be interested... The deal was, I had 2 hard drives in my computer. A 40gb drive was my C drive. That drive wouldn't boot up. This happened on a routine turn- off-the-computer-turn-on-the-computer operation. Everthing had been working fine when I turned it off. It just wouldn't boot up again. For the ecto geeks, a bit more info from my wonderful geek husband (who, yes, has been after me to backup for ages): ============== The 40gb C drive wouldn't boot, but I installed that in another computer as Secondary Master and ran Norton Systemwork's Disk Doctor on it. Norton detected several problems and repaired the drive, which I re-installed in Vickie's machine which then booted. The 120gb "E" drive is the problem. It no longer shows up in the BIOS on either the old or new computers. When the bios looks for the drive, it makes a clicking noise, like the heads are being returned to the landing zone. Following Maxtor's troubleshooting guide, I tried different cables, IDE controllers and jumper settings. I ran Maxtor's PowerMax drive diagnostic utility. (I even tried Maxtor's "MaxBlast" software. That thing has wiped out whole hard drives before, and is considered a item of last resort in this house.) No luck with anything. As far as I can tell, the drive's firmware is scrambled. Maxtor doesn't offer any utility to flash it. Finally, I tried swapping the board on the drive with the board from an identical drive, a tactic that has worked before to rescue a 250 gig drive for a client. No luck. ============== Thanks for the support, I'm very appreciative. Sherry, I'm sorry about your hard drive too. I appreciete the tip about OnTrack, but they're way too expensive (any Ectophiles work there?) for just a few digital pictures and other things. He just got off the phone with Maxtor. They were no help. No matter what, the hard drive isn't going to get thrown away. If it doesn't get sent to a professional (costly) it'll get put away, well-packed, in hopes that someday... Backup, that's my new motto. Vickie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Read only the mail you want - Yahoo!
