I've got a (signed) poster from that show and it was billed as a Project Lo concert. If memory serves I believe that Walter was surprised at the turnout. I don't think he realized how many of us showed up for Happy. I have to admit that I liked the show a lot better than the two Project Lo cd's I purchased. I did however get a copy of Warpaint. My previous copy had been taped for me by the gentleman who introduced me to her music. I also got a cd by a group called La Pieta. Walter had been playing it in the store earlier. It reminded me a lot of Speed the Plough; a Feelies offshoot with a similar but softer, gentler sound. So it was a good concert that led to the purchase of some nice stuff even if it wasn't from the same artists. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Mar 2005 17:29:55 -0600 From: "Collected Sounds" <2345@collectedsounds.com> Subject: RE: CD Baby Hi all Vickie said this: >All these glowing reviews, and not one >person has indicated they thought $4 per CD was outrageous, which >is my first reaction. It's not outrageous, I don't think. Does anyone expect them to do it for free? I mean, come on...it's a business. Why would they do it an not make any money? Sometimes it costs $4 to ship something so they probably don't make much of a profit on every single one. I guess I'm a little sensitive because for five years now, I've been doing free publicity for artists (through my site). I don't make a penny. I get a thank you and that's it (oh I get a CD if the person wants it reviewed). It's getting to the point where it's taking up so much of my time that I can't afford to do it anymore. I still have to have a regular 40 hour a week job. >How can indie artists afford to have someone else take >so much of their money? How can anyone else be expected to work really hard on promoting someone and get nothing in return? I am also on a mailing list of indie musicians and it seems that they often want someone to just do stuff for them. They don't want to pay anyone for services. They don't want to pay for inclusion in a seminar or group. They think it should all be free (not every artist is like this, but I've read my share of rants to this effect). I just don't understand that mentality. They won't play music for free, why should someone promote them for free? We all want to get paid for our hard work. I don't think anyone is trying to get rich off of someone else's work, but sheesh, it would be nice to get some compensation. CD Baby has to organize, store, ship, package CDs as well as maintain databases and websites (that site is HUGE) I sincerely think that CD Baby's $4 is cheap for all the work they do. Being on that site is very valuable. Sure you can sell CDs on your website, but if people don't already know who you are, how will they find out about you? When is the last time you went to a website of an artist you have never heard of? Never, right? How can you look for someone if you don't know they exist? CDBaby has this 'if you like blahblah you might like blahblah' thing which I find valuable. Sometimes they're not very good but that's because the artist might think she sounds just like Sarah McLachlan but in fact, does not. But I personally have learned about many new artists just by browsing the site...and bought their CD, AND given them free promotion. You can't expect to get noticed and heard unless you are OUT there and you have to compensate people whose jobs it is to put you out there. Simple. The sitting around hoping you'll get famous thing doesn't work for most (except for some of the untalented pop stars, that is) It would be silly for Happy not to be on CDBaby. But of course that's only my opinion. :) ~Amy - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Xenu's Sister Sent: Thursday, March 24, 2005 5:11 AM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: CD Baby Happy said she'd think about using CD Baby. She mentioned them being expensive, and I can see now why. They take $4 per CD sold!? Ouch! She sells them herself on her web site and gets full price. Of course, the convenience of not having to ship so many yourself would be a factor. I'm just curious though. All these glowing reviews, and not one person has indicated they thought $4 per CD was outrageous, which is my first reaction. Why is it not? How can indie artists afford to have someone else take so much of their money? I have no idea. I'm not trying to be combative, I'm just asking because I'm completely clueless when it comes to this. It's so easy to throw in an extra album, take a chance on something, compared to going to a dedicated site and paying postage solely for that item, which you mightn't like. International postage is usually heaps when ordering directly from artists - Eliza Gilkyson's people said it'd cost US$20 to send one cd to NZ, which is a lie. CD Baby charge $2 per cd, without jewel cases. Karen ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #84 **************************
