I also sell through my website (although not right now) and it takes me forever to send to people... going to the post office annoys me.... so I like CD Baby because they take care of the little details. The $4 thing does kind of bug me, but it isn't too bad. What I love about CD Baby is they set up the digital distribution for me and they pay me weekly. So every week via Pay Pal I get a nice little payment for my digital sales (which have really taken off, though I'd prefer people buy the album to see the artwork and stuff) and other sales. jessica - ------------------------------------------------ http://www.jessicaweiser.com http://www.cdbaby.com/weiser2 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 08:01:42 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: Re: CD Baby (the $4) On Thu, 24 Mar 2005, Xenu's Sister wrote: > Troy, dmw and Robert, thanks for your posts about the $4. > It was enlightning for me, and I hope you don't mind, but > I passed them on to Happy too. We all have to remember that I certainly don't mind. The economics of getting music to people when you try to go beyond the level of playing for them at your neighborhood bar are arcane and more than a little scary. I think every independent artists benefits from the efforts to be candid and shed some of the mystery. Honestly, I like the playing-at-local-bar level a lot better in most ways - much less risk! - but it obviously limits the audience and it isn't feasible - or desirable - for all recording artists to be primarily performing artists. It's also a very strange time in the industry, as things begin to align themselves away from a focus on physical delivery of CDs and toward digital delivery of data. Media consolidation is also having a major impact. For independent artists, the current result is that it's *much* harder to sell CDs without major promotional musicle, and commercial radio outlets are more resistant than ever to unproven artists w/o label affiliations. On the other hand, there are lots of new opportunities springing up that are EAGER for independent music -- bloggers and webcasters -- but virtually none have signficant audiences in traditional terms. > Again, **as far as I know** she doesn't have anything like > a manager/agent/"people" to do this work for her. And again, > I'm 100% clueless as to what Lolo Records has in mind. What's the involvement of the Dangerous folks? I must have missed that. Whoever is handling Dangerous' PR is clearly top-notch. I wish I could afford a Dangerous 2-Bus.
