The reissue's actually been out for quite a few years now; I keep meaning to pick it up to see if the mastering's been improved over the original release (producer Nick Launay's work has been plagued by poor CD mastering!) > The addition of the B-side "Hellbent Heaven" and remixes of "Breakaway" > (formerly known as "I Can't Break Away," It's always been called "Breakaway" in its native country. The longer title was a US-only thing (similar to the curious habit US labels have of retitling songs with extra words in brackets :-) - - Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Mar 2005 20:58:10 -0800 From: Tom Ditto Subject: re: *SMART* Albany folks! o;?Vickie wants to know: Where were their champions in Albany? Why didn't the radio stations in the area embrace them and build them up? Why didn't the music writers shout from the highest...er, hill, how brilliant these people were and try and get them some national attention? Why wasn't enough noise made *THEN* so that now, here and now, these people aren't still obscure and struggling? ====================== Albany is not a springboard for world class talent. Happy and KB had good coverage and a devoted following within its confines, but there were no paths from there to the world. Itbs a regrettable fact that in the b80bs and probably even today, there was simply no way to convert recognition in Albany into recognition on the big stage. It is a good place to practice and get up to speed, but once an artist goes supersonic, there is no alternative but migration. They did move. Their selection of Woodstock was brilliant, and it should have worked better than it did. The ears and wallets in that enchanted forest are sufficient to the task. Woodstock people are among the most appreciative and understanding folk you can find in the industry. Ibd like someone near the helm to tell us why that tack left them in a luff. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2005 10:04:42 -0500 From: wojizzle forizzle Subject: dead can dance http://www.dcddiscs.com/ um. whoa! have anyone attended any of these shows so far? while i'd love to splurge and buy the entire set, that's pretty unrealistic. i'd be curious to hear how the performances are and whether the sets vary from night to night. woj n.p. the decemberists - picaresque ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2005 15:01:01 -0800 From: "Bill Mazur" Subject: RE: CD Baby Recommendations I would also highly recommend Jack Sutton's Harmony Ridge Music. Jack is an Ectophile and really wonderful guy. He specializes in all kinds of women's music. He was very supportive of Katheleen. Here are my comments on CD Baby: My experience with CB Baby has been nothing but positive from the perspective of selling CDs and getting paid. You have to market yourself well though to get hits on your CD Baby page(s). You can't expect that because you are on CD Baby that you will automatically get hits to your page. There are thousands of artists there on CD Baby now. A number of years ago, when Katheleen and I were still partners and working together, I was actively promoting her and we got action on our CD Baby listing. We had the CD Baby logo linking to CD Baby from Katheleen's once active web site. The CD Baby page had links back to her web site. There has been no marketing, gigs, web sites or any other activity to drive people to Katheleen's CD Baby page. It still lives there but we haven't gotten any action in years. So just being there doesn't cut it. You have to be active playing gigs and marketing yourself. The backend piece of CD Baby allows you, as the artist, to pick three artists that you feel might be similar to you and this can help drive some minimal activity to your site. As I said this is a backend, behind the scenes thing. If Happy registered and sent her CDs to CD Baby, they would ask her to list these three Sounds Like artists. She might pick Kate Bush, Yes and Annie Lennox, for example. As most of you know who frequent the CD Baby site looking for new artists, there is a Sounds Like search. So if you put in Sounds Like: Kate Bush then Happy's CDs would come up with a dozens or hundreds of other artists (I just did the search and got 371 artists). Happy does have an advantage because she has a large catalogue. It just takes someone stumbling onto one of her CDs to prompt a more extensive search for more Happy music. But I agree that Derek is one of the really good guys out there. I have talked with him personally and he is very genuine and all about the artists having a forum. He came from the same place as many artists himself trying to promote and market his music. CD Baby started out as grass roots and turned into a phenomenon kind of like Craig's List. I sat through one of Derek Sivers presentations at Folk Alliance in San Diego, and it was one of the best workshops I've seen at a Folk Alliance. The guys heart is really into the music and he's created a business model that is very fair--no artists can "buy" visibility at CD baby. They don't operate like BOrder's etc, where you have to pay your way to get into a play station or be listed on a recommended list. Each artist gets the same shots at publicity, etc. I think Happy, despite bad experiences at cdstreet, would be a fool not to look into selling stuff on CD Baby. From everyone I've known whos sold stuff on CD Baby, they are also very responsive about paying artists, letting artists know when their stock is low, as well as letting artists know who buys their CDs, etc. (I've often bought CDs by artists on CD Baby, only to have it followed by a thank you from the artist--at first it kind of freaked me out, but I think its a good thing!) As a customer of CD Baby, I've never had a problem--they're always prompt, curteous, and their e-mails thanking you for your purchase are hilarious. She has no "people" to take care of her business, as far as I know. My reply to that comment: Eight years ago, I had a full time (50 to 60 hour weeks) demanding job outside of music. I did all of the guerilla Marketing for Katheleen's CD fairly successfully in the evenings and sometimes on the weekend. I am just one person and I had success doing it. We had someone initially design Katheleen's fairly straight up web site, but then I continued to create, add content and maintain the site. Happy is a fantastic brilliant artist! Perhaps she is not as experienced at Marketing but she could do a lot of this by carving out the time to do it and by getting volunteers to help her. Before you ask, I have too many very challenging things going on in my life right now to volunteer. My point is that it can be done by an individual. My efforts had driven a few hundred hits a week to Katheleen's web site and this was with about 10 to 15 hours of steady Marketing effort each week. Nobody knew who Katheleen was and I helped gain her some awareness. Happy already has a very loyal following. It wouldn't take much to get the word out to new converts. My 2 cents worth... - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Xenu's Sister Sent: Friday, March 18, 2005 10:20 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: Marketing ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #76 **************************
