Being a part of Ecto has touched my life in numerous ways as well. I have made many friends here. Here's my story: In late 1997, I stumbled indirectly upon Ecto. At the time I was doing guerilla Internet marketing to promote Katheleen Michaels' CD. I had been communicating with people all over the world for several months via the Internet. I was seeking out people who ran web sites, forums and discussion groups devoted to women's music. I had been sending our seed copies of the Katheleen's "Faces, Traces and Timelines" CD for review to people that would potentially be interested in her music. After a few months of relative success doing this promotion, I happened upon Joel Siegfried's site. This is from Joel's web site: I chose "Ecto" as my user handle because of my interest in acoustic music, particularly such artists as those listed below. To learn more about them, just click on their links. The term "ecto" as it applies to music actually comes from the Usenet newsgroup alt.music.ecto dedicated to Happy Rhodes, and named after one of her albums. I then found the Ectophile's Guide. I submitted a review request for Katheleen's CD to Neile. In reading about Happy Rhodes on the Ecto web site I was definitely intrigued. As many of you here on Ecto, I am a huge Kate Bush fan. I went out immediately and bought MWABT based on everything I read about Happy. After hearing that CD I was thoroughly entranced! I then signed up to Ecto and was in lurker mode for about two weeks before introducing myself. This was the first time I had ever joined a discussion group. But this group was SO inviting. When I did introduce myself I was so warmly welcomed it felt like meeting up with old friends after not seeing them for years. Vickie was the first to welcome me and many others did as well. Quoting Meth's post: [warning: self-indulgent and probably boring] Your post was neither! (And I gotta say I am still damned proud of ectofest's spawn, EctoFestWest. That was one hell of a weekend.) Since I may be, and probably am, the only person that still is on this list who helped to organize that event, I thank you Meth. I thank you for those complimentary words on behalf of Shelly DeForte and Michael Schneider, Phil Hudson and myself. Phil and I have been friends and musical compatriots for years and I turned him on to Ecto. Shelly and I met through Ecto and her desire to put on Ectofest West. When all of the discussion was happening on Ecto about really making Ectofest West happen this time, Shelly took on the challenge. I felt that I could help in many ways and offered my assistance off-line to her. We decided to meet up by going to see Emily Bezar together at Mills College in Oakland, CA. Afterwards we talked about trying to make Ectofest West a reality. With Shelly's permission, I enlisted Phil's help soon afterwards. Phil had been doing events and trade shows for several hi-tech companies. I had first hand experience with the fact that he knew how to throw a great shindig. Shelly WAS inspired by Meth and team and the Ectofest events. She really wanted to do an Ectofest show out on the West Coast. After all of the Ecto discussion about it, we wanted for all of West Coast Happy fans to hear her in person, for ourselves, in our part of the world. It was wonderful that so many Ectophiles from other parts on the country came out for the event. Shelly was the creative and driving force behind Ectofest West. She pulled together the line-up of artists. She did all kinds of other behind the scenes logistics with the help of her great guy Michael. Shelly actually wanted to have Emily Bezar on the bill and approached her about the possibility the night we saw her. Emily had to decline due to touring schedule conflicts. Besides being the EFW song-and-dance man, comedian and MC, Phil was the creative and logistical force behind Sunday's EFW house concert in the Santa Cruz Mountains. My wife, Billi, and others contributed home cooked food for that event. Almost all of the elements came together for those events and made that weekend really special. The pre-weekend event gig with Cyo and Pipa on Friday night was definitely magical. My contributions to the event were varied. My main contribution was being able to really help Shelly pull off the event by funding a major portion of it including being able to pay all of the artists. If I remember correctly, I actually think Cyo and the Blind did the gig for free. I state that almost all of the events came together for that weekend. One major thing did not. The only real regret that I have of that whole weekend is that Happy injured herself. Life is strange and has many twists and turns. I always wonder if Happy could have avoided that tragedy if she never came out here for EFW. I guess you can't think that way. I just really, really, really wish that injury never happened to her. BTW, on a side note, Phil is still alive and well and going through changes like us all. I told him that he is missed on Ecto. He sends his love! Meth states: But I am sure that this isn't the end. I am sure you are correct Meth! All the best to everyone here! I am deeply, DEEPLY envious of Tom and Mark for getting to see and know Happy and Kevin while they were still in Albany. Cheers to them for supporting the two. Thank you for your stories! There was a point, at one time, where I just *hated* Albany. Why? Because they didn't know what they had in their midst. Both Kevin and Happy, alone and separately, are true and rare musical gems. I know they had a following, but it was a small following, and almost certainly generated by word-of-mouth. Where were their champions in Albany? Why didn't the radio stations in the area embrace them and build them up? Why didn't the music writers shout from the highest...er, hill, how brilliant these people were and try and get them some national attention? Why wasn't enough noise made *THEN* so that now, here and now, these people aren't still obscure and struggling? Albany is the loser. When the historical record is written (and don't think there won't be Happy Rhodes scholars in the future, long after Happy's dead and ecto) Albany's going to come out looking like shit because it ignored the brilliance that was RIGHT THERE for years and years. That's what I think, anyway. Vickie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Featured Acts Appearing This Week: Trina Hamlin - folk blues iconoclast Trina Hamlin is known for her sizzling blues harmonica and her energy-packed singing and guitar work. Her pure unspoiled voice and powerful presence have gained her a steady national following since she began playing solo shows in the downtown New York City club scene. Originally from Mineapolis, Hamlin attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and graduated with a degree in Professional Music, after which she moved to New York City and began performing and honing her songwriting skills. She was chosen as "Most Wanted New Artist" at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and as an alumnus of the Newport Folk Festival, she performed to sold out crowds along with the likes of Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams and the Indigo Girls. She has performed on The Late Show with Conan O' Brien with the "Suits" and her music has been heard in the CBS-TV movie "Friends at Last," starring Kathleen Turner as well as on the WB's "Dawson's Creek". Hamlin has joked that even if the Blues did not originate in her native Minnesota, there's gotta be "something in the water" there that causes that Blues tradition to run very deep! Well Trina musta went and had herself a drink...'cause she's one helluva Blues player! These days, live and on record, Hamlin can be found accompanying herself on guitar, harmonica, and piano, working her keen sense of intuition, surrounding herself in the music. She is currently in LA working on a new CD to be released this Fall. For more, visit Trina at her website www.trinahamlin.com. James Lee Stanley - legendary writer/artist/performer We're pleased to welcome back to the MSSS stage this week, legendary recording artist James Lee Stanley. Not only does James write beautiful, clever, well-crafted songs, but he sings and plays so well, he makes the whole thing look effortless! He also punctuates his performance with often downright hilarious repartee in between numbers. So as an entertainer, it's hard not to love the guy. As a artist, James did have a Top-5 hit with Coming Out of Hiding. He also scored the emmy award winning "Cathy" specials for prime time CBS. With more than 20 albums to his credit, this very prolific singer-songwriter has garnered some incredible praise over the years. FI magazine in their March 1999 issue hailed his solo album Freelance Human Being as a masterpiece and listed it as one of the top 200 CDs of all time, along with the likes of Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, and the Beatles. Always with something new in the works, James just completed a new musical, Sex and the Single Mom, which is scheduled for release in spring of 2005. His most recent project, a joint effort with longtime friend and collaborator John Batdorf, is All Wood And Stones. It's a "concept album", a collection of eleven classic Rolling Stones songs all done up "acoustic". It's the Stones like you've never heard them before. The reviews have been outstanding and all the songs have been getting monster airplay, particularly on XM Satellite Radio. For more on this legendary writer/performer, visit his website www.jamesleestanley.com. Open Mike: The MSSS Open Mike follows the Featured Acts, starting usually a little after 9:00. All creative souls are welcome, but you need to sign up before 8:00 when the first Featured Act begins. Remember, it can be anything creative or entertaining--it doesn't necessarily have to be musical! If you're a comic, a poet, or a storyteller, we'll give you 6 minutes to do your thing. If you're a singer, musician, or songwriter, you'll get 2 songs; try to keep 'em around 3 minutes each. (No sprawling epics okay, unless you're willing to play just the one song.) We want to keep the Open Mike moving along out of consideration to the other participants, so please don't monopolize the stage. Keep your total stage time around 6-7 minutes. That way we can get through more people. The Venue: Cafi Bellissimo 22458 Ventura Blvd. (1 block west of Shoup) Woodland Hills, CA 91364 818-225-0026 Directions: from Hollywood/Downtown LA... take the 101 north/west. Pass the 405. About 10 miles past the 405, exit at Shoup (which is one exit past Topanga Canyon Blvd). Come down ramp which dumps you out onto westbound Ventura Blvd. Cafi Bellissimo is on the left one block past the light at Shoup. There's never a cover charge at Cafe Bellissimo, but a $10 minimum on food or drink is requested, to support the establishment and keep the Showcase running. The food at Cafe Bellissimo is truly outstanding and Emilio, the owner, still graciously offers a 2-for-1 Songwriter Night Special, which makes an evening at the MSSS one of the best dining/entertainment values around. Print and clip this coupon to take advantage: http://www.garretswayne.com/html/bellissimo.htm. The Host: That's moi, Garret Swayne! I'm normally there just to keep things moving smoothly along. But, time permitting, I usually squeeze in a few of my own songs over the course of the evening...one of the perks of being host! So join us this Tuesday night for an outstanding evening of the best original music LA has to offer--The MainStreet Songwriters Showcase. Remember, there's nothing like a great song! Peace and blessings all... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Garret Swayne garret@garretswayne.com http://www.garretswayne.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The MainStreet Songwriters Showcase is held every Tuesday night at Cafi Bellissimo, in Woodland Hills. Hosted by acclaimed singer/songwriter/recording artist Garret Swayne, The MSSS features the finest up-and-coming songwriters, singers, poets, musicians, and comedians in Los Angeles in a relaxed casual atmosphere. Each week, we'll feature one or more original acts, followed by a general Open Mike. Participants in the Open Mike should sign up between 7:30 and 8:00. Our intention is to support and promote the creative community of Southern California. During the performances, we ask that the audience be respectful of the artists and those who wish to listen. We want to create an atmosphere that honors the song and the performer. So please, no loud or distracting conversations during the show. Cafi Bellissimo is renowned for its fine Italian cuisine, singing waiters, and casually elegant ambiance. It features a wide menu, including appetizers, salads, complete dinners, and desserts, not to mention the best pizza in the Valley. It also has a full bar. Hi Robert, I do hope you cut and paste your other posts here, now that you're on the mailing list. > > perhaps is fa.music.ecto not entirely connected to the ecto mailing list? First, I didn't know fa.music.ecto was still up and running. Amazing. Second, good, it brought you here! Third, I wonder how many other people have posted, have seen their own posts, but just assumed they were being ignored when no one said anything to what they posted. You're very savvy to guess that the newsgroup might be read only. Forth, I do hope you cut and paste your other posts here, now that you're here. Welcome! Thoughts? I suggested to Happy that she sell mp3s of the Sampler (the whole thing, not just individual songs) on ebay and she wants to discuss it further, so I wanted to get input. Here are some of my random thoughts... All the Sampler CDs are gone now. Happy's keeping a couple/few for her own archive purposes and of course, no more will be pressed. The new album is *at least* a couple of months away. There are a lot of Happy fans not on Ecto who would want to hear this new music, but don't even know it exists. Every time a Happy CD comes up for sale on ebay, someone bids. Rarely has an item gone by without bidders. And not always me, either. They may or may not know about Happy's web site. I used to write people who were bidding on CDs to tell them about her site and many responded in the vein of "thanks, I didn't know." I did get warned about contacting bidders so I quit doing that. An ebay listing could include, in its description, a link to her web site where interested parties could find other, older CDs. (Unless outside links are prohibited, I don't know) The description would be worded to make it clear to people that: 1) This ISN'T a CD, but rather high-quality mp3s of an out-of-print item. 2) This ISN'T the full "Find Me" album, but rather an out-of-print Sampler containing 8 of the eventual 11 songs. 3) The CD is upcoming, and besides being firmware, it will contain 3 extra songs, artwork (of course) and slightly different mixes. 4) whatever else should be made clear to potential bidders. Since there's no hard copy, and no shipping involved, the price would be lower. What would be a fair price, and would anyone who has already (and still will) pay the full amount for their copy be put out, upset, feel cheated, that they paid full price and now mp3s were being sold at a cheaper rate? I see lots of upsides: getting Happy much-needed extra money (every little bit helps); a weird kind of publicity that a new album is on the way; giving access to the songs to people who otherwise wouldn't know about it; maybe get her some attention in other ways (I know lots of places sell mp3s of artist's songs and albums, but do many artists sell their own mp3s on ebay?); if anyone were to be naughty and try to sell their Sampler CD on ebay, this would put a real damper on that. I don't see a downside, but maybe I'm not thinking of something. Does anyone have experience selling on ebay? I have a stellar feedback rating but that's from buying. I've never sold anything. I have no idea what the fees are. I don't know how to write a description, especially for something as unusual as this. Any tips? Any willing helpers (writing a description) if this becomes a reality? What do people think? Vickie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I don't even remember anymore!). And that's not even referenced on the News page - -- which, incidentally, starts off with "NEWS (November 2003)." auntiesocialmusic.com is the first result when you search google for happy rhodes...and anyone what looks like nothing happening for the past two years is going to give up right away. I don't think you'll find anyone upset about buying a disc if the mp3s become available -- after all, we're the ones with the rare, limited edition disc which can be autographed! jeff n.p. _Shteyt Oyf_, Klezmatics ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #74 **************************
