This was an audition by the one for the other. The question before them was whether their opposite number was for real. They must have concluded that each was both real and somewhat more. At this moment in 1984 I already knew about KBbs talent, but Happy Rhodesb performance that night shocked me b what I call the shock of recognition. This happens when something completely new also seems completely familiar. I had never heard her songs before, yet some seemed already committed to my memory. I found myself singing quietly under the ambience. The pickup band did not seem to miss a riff or a back beat. No doubt, they too found the memorable music easy to memorize, especially when delivered by this unique musician. Chip Lueck is NOT Wacko! (Re: Ken's work on the lyrics Sources yesterday confirmed that Chip Lueck was not, in fact, as wacko as every single Ectophile thought when he shared his interpretation that the song "Fall" was about foliage. Happy Rhodes gave the lyrics to the song to a member of her Collective Heart and confirmed that the foilage imagry was correct. She was also highly impressed with Ectophile Ken Descoteaux for hearing the words "two Junes" but declined to elaborate at this time about the meaning of those words or the song as a whole. Rhodes also did not clarify the questions Ectophiles has about the words spoken by the opening shadowy voices. ======= FALL ======== In Out (?) In Out (?) (indistinct voices) All my worries here are through I give all my colour to you This world lost me back two Junes I surrender All hope to youth When the moon comes up I go down For the first time Theres a garden deep Deep in my heart But its blossomed For the last time Cold is mercy Heavy and sweet Leaves make my blanket, root at my feet Life is only good for the living Time out-ran me But sleep is forgiving When the moon comes up I go down For the first time Theres a garden deep Deep in my heart But it's blossomed For the last time Will the angels cry Over my past Or over my love Bringing him moss To remember me by Sleep - --- Chip Lueck wrote: > Ken Descoteaux wrote: > > Deciphering the lyrics is tricky especially when you aren't sure what > > the song is actually about. I wrote and asked her about specific lines and phrases, and told her that the "Fall" was pretty much a mass of question marks. She wrote with several different corrections and additions and I've update the lyrics pages at http://www.wretchawry.com/happy/lyrics/index.html. It wasn't that I thought Chip was on the wrong path, I just didn't understand enough of the song to get how he even came to that interpretation in the first place. That's why I had to write Happy. HUGE kudos to Chip and Ken for their excellent hearing. Vickie Tired of spam? Yahoo! No kidding. All these responses to this thread (Brian's and Chip's in particular) have helped me put together my thoughts on something that has been on my mind for a while now -- namely, how music in general, and ecto in particular have completely shaped my life. For me it all goes back to Kate Bush. After her music helped me get through high school, in college it brought me to rec.music.gaffa on that fateful day when one of the geekier guys at my work-study job told me that I could go to the computer center and get a VAX account and get on this bulletin-board thing called USENET. Love-Hounds did many things for me: most importantly it brought me and woj together (all together now: awwwww ;), but it also eventually brought me to ecto. Here's a list of the parts of my life that can be directly traced back to ecto: * My house. I knew Tamar Boursalian from her posts on Love-Hounds (and occasionally on ecto too), and she contacted me one day saying that since we both lived in New Haven, we should meet up sometime. We did, and started hanging out and going to shows. When I moved to New Jersey I still worked in Connecticut, so whenever there was a weeknight show going on in New Haven I would crash on Tamar's couch. I seriously coveted her apartment and she knew it, so when her roommate moved out and she neared the end of her doctoral program, she asked if woj and I would be interested in taking over the lease. woj and I are still here 7.5 years later. * My job. Ecto led to smoe.org, which started hosting susanwerner.com, which led to my getting to know Susan Werner, which led to my getting to be her roadie in the fall of 2000, which gave me the experience I needed to become Rachael Sage's road manager last year. And oh yeah, ecto is how I know Rachael too: ecto introduced me to the music of Veda Hille, and so it was that I was at one of Veda's shows in NYC when a fellow Veda fan (and ecto lurker) gave me a copy of Rachael's _Smashing The Serene_. A few weeks later I saw Rachael play, and after the show I met her and told her about ecto and the Ectophiles' Guide, then she joined ecto and over the next few years she played at ectofest and at my house, and thus the road managing gig eventually came together. (Have I lost you yet? :) * Our house concert series. Neal's posts about Cindy Lee Berryhill's living room tour clued me in to this house concert thing, and when woj and I moved into our current abode we noted that the living room would be big enough to have a concert sometime. When we were offered the chance to have Veda Hille come play one night in November 1998, we jumped at the chance. It took a little while for us to start up a regular series, but eventually we did and it's still going strong. * My side career as a concert presenter. For three years, I went clinically insane and co-presented ectofest with Chuck Stipak in Danbury. I look back at those festivals and say to myself "what the HELL were you thinking?!?", but it is indeed true that you learn from your mistakes. I have been putting that experience to use for the past year running the New Haven Folk Alliance's Monthly Concert Series, and this year I'm co-director of the New Haven Folk Festival as well. I never would have even thought about doing either of those things if I haven't done ectofest. (And I gotta say I am still damned proud of ectofest's spawn, EctoFestWest. That was one hell of a weekend.) More often than not, I can trace a major life-shaping experience back to some aspect of the community here. It really does boggle the mind. Every once and I while I take a look around and wonder what seemingly inocuous thing is going to turn out to be important in my life down the road ... there's no way of knowing, of course, but I am sure that this isn't the end. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #73 **************************
