And this is a bit strange as I have been a (HUGE) fan of Kate's since Wuthering Heights, and of Tori, Noa, Sarah M, Allison M, Luba, Dalbello, Imogen, Fiona and well, almost every other ecto goddess going actually... The only reason I can think of is that I moved from Vancouver to Paris and then on to London approx. 13 years ago - and managed to stay away from my Macintosh computer for many of those years.... I kind of lost contact with the alternative music community in America.... Anyway, upon returning to the West Coast of Canada I quickly got back in the swing of the internet - and doing a huge refresher course on what has been going on here for the past decade. I introduced my friend to a 'file sharing' site on the web, and suggested some female vocalists that he should check out - including Kate Bush. One evening I was over at his flat and he started playing one of his newly favorite 'Kate' songs - the problem was I knew that it was not a Kate song. He insisted that it was Kate Bush and Annie Lennox - well, that is what the MP3 tag said. What an amazing thing! How could I have missed Kate and Annie doing a duet - especially as I had lived in London? I was mystified. The one voice did sound a bit like Kate, but the other voice did not sound like Annie Lennox. Regardless of my confusion, I loved the song. Whoever was singing was EXACTLY my taste in vocalists. I told my friend he was wrong about the artists - he maintained he was right - we had an argument and I do remember saying that it was possible that it was one very talented person who was doing both of the vocals. I said goodnight and went home to do research on the internet.... (BTW - this supposed 'Kate and Annie' duet came up at the fourth most popular shared 'Kate' song when 'Kate Bush' was entered in to the search engine on the file sharing site!!! So, hundreds or thousands of people have Happy on their hard drives, believing it to be Kate and Annie. What a shame! I intentionally share the file with a correction in capitols 'HAPPY RHODES NOT KATE AND ANNIE' in the hopes that every person who searches for Kate or for Annie will see this on their search and realize the mistake. I don't know how Happy feels about file sharing (apologies if she is against it) - but I felt like it was the only thing I could do to try and inform people about the identity of the real artist of that song in the hopes that they would then google her and find their way to her web site....) It took me around 45 minutes to find out the real identity of the singer. Remember, I did not have the correct name of the artists - I did not know if it was a duet or a band or one singer! I entered what little I could remember of the lyric ('When the rain comes down' - I think I typed in to Google) Finally - Happy Rhodes. Well Happy single handedly revived my love of music. I had become quite disillusioned with the music industry - I had worked with a few bands in London, even did a stint at a large music studio there too - but the 90's were different than the 80's - and many of the bands that I loved were finding it difficult to get a record contract. I like strong females - and especially androgynous or unique but competent vocalists. By that you must know how much Happy thrilled me. And in a way I am kind of glad to come to her music late - no antagonizing wait between albums - and as some of you mention that one Happy album is a feast - I was diving into a literal smorgasbord that extended as far as I could see... So how can a singer that can pull off Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush to Tanita Tikaram be 'In Hiding' so far under the popular radar? I would love to ask Happy what she feels is the answer to this question. Maybe we could start another thread in this forum - or perhaps this question has already been discussed many times. Anyway it is all a bit irrelevant - I'm simply grateful to have found her and that I am able to add the quality of her music (soul) to my life. I am a bass-baritone male singer. Another great thing about Happy is that she is the only female I have ever heard to challenge me on the low notes! LOL Singing her songs is one of the best work-outs I have found as a singer. What a challenge! Thank-you Happy Rhodes. So you are not famous (yet). There is still time - but you are 'famous' and perhaps even more important, obviously DEEPLY RESPECTED by all of us here at Ecto - and I am sure many thousands more around the globe. best, Michael HH ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 04:56:55 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: First Time with Happy - --- Michael Hewett-Hicks wrote: (great story deleted) > I don't know how Happy feels about file > sharing (apologies if she is against it) http://www.wretchawry.com/happy/samples :-) Welcome Michael! Deciphering the lyrics is tricky especially when you aren't sure what the song is actually about. After I transcribed Fall I realized that I had had no clue what the song was about beforehand, and I'm still unsure afterwords. And your live versions complicate matters, the lyrics in some places are different. In the audience recording Happy seems to definitely sing "colors", and in the board recording it seems to definitely be "color" (and this is what I hear on the CD), and the final verse changes from "remember me by" to "remember him by" Xenu's Sister wrote: >--- Ken Descoteaux wrote: > > >>She'd rather brood or throw tantrums in my (way)[brain] >> >> > >Way might not be right, it doesn't sound perfect, but it's not brain. Brain seems like an apropos lyric if you assume that the song's "she" is a personality in your mind. The "In/Out" words could be almost anything, but it reminds me exactly of "Breathing" as for the timing and relative lengths of the two chanted words. And In/Out could make sense with the rest of the lyrics. >>I give all my color to you >>This world lost me back two Junes >> >> > >Could be. In the board recorded live version I don't hear any sign of the "th" and it seems clearly "you". >>When the Moon comes up >>I go down >>Fall >> >> > >Fall instead of For. "For" makes more sense with the next line "the first time", and there isn't much that you could use to distinguish between "For/Fall" in a song. >>heavy and sweet >>Please make the blanket >>move my feet >> >> > >This is all very odd and nonsensical, but yours sounds better than mine. Its nice and ambigous, near or ne'er (never), so it must be right. My interpretation of this song was that she was singing from the perspective of a tree, but after having more of the lyrics deciphered, it seems more like she's a leaf. Of course, I've been accused of looking at things through wackovision, so it might be nothing of the sort... I was listening to Girl Versions and just on a whim decided to drop by Emm's website. She has a new album out! - Songs of Love and Death. New album, but not new material; it's covers of songs by Irish artists and sounds interesting. If it's nearly as good as Girl Versions, it will certainly be worth owning. From the website: "Recorded mostly in her living room in Montrial but also in locations as unusual as art galleries and hotel rooms, Songs of Love and Death, Emms latest record is a diverse collection of songs by contemporary Irish artists. The album includes songs by Thin Lizzy, The Thrills, The Corrs, Ash, and Gilbert OSullivan, amongst others. Produced and arranged by Emm, the album features super-cellist Dana Feder, drummer Charles Dumont as well as folk legend Kate McGarrigle on banjo. Emm performs everything from harpsichord and electric guitars to clarinet and bass guitar. Hear for yourself as Ireland's formative pop, punk and goth songs are transformed into whispery suicide anthems, jangly toe-tappers and orchestral dreamscapes. Did we use the word dreamscapes? You bet we did." Ordering info at http://emmgryner.com/music/loveanddeath/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Mar 2005 18:58:42 -0500 From: Happy Rhodes Subject: Happy photos? Hi. Apparently, there were a lot of shots taken of Happy both onstage and after the show at the Tin Angel on the 29th of January. But no one has sent a single copy of their photos to Happy. She usually respectfully asks that copies of photos be forwarded to her if at all possible. But not a single one this time. Could anyone out there who may have taken shots at that show, please send or email a copy to Happy now? We would love to use anything you have for her website. If you have hard copies, you can send them to Auntie Social Music, 231 Stevens Rd., Edmeston, NY 13335. Any digital copies can be emailed directly to her at cptbryant@earthlink.net. I understand that a good many of those pics were probably taken by non-Ectophiles, so forgive me. But maybe there are other concerts/events that you all might want to share with Happy?
