Not as fervent as Ethan, but they do have a special place in my history of live performances. I saw Big Pig at The Paradise here in Boston, and I can honestly say, it was probably the most (or at least in the top 5) energetic, sweaty and fun shows I've ever attended. There was something about that band. all the drums, maybe?... that compelled you to dance. And we're not talking tap your feet here. The kind of dancing that makes you sweat! Can't really remember a lot of the details of the show, but I remember Lead Vocalist, Sherine, having a clean, strong voice and being a terrific frontperson. That and the dancing! Just received the Mushroom Records update of this 1988 Australian classic, and I feel compelled to plug it. The addition of the B-side "Hellbent Heaven" and remixes of "Breakaway" (formerly known as "I Can't Break Away," which for better or worse you may recall from the soundtrack of _Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure_) and "Hungry Town" have made a terrific album even better. If you love melody and/or great drumming, and if the concept of a seven-person band in which five members play drums/percussion, five sing, one plays harmonica, one plays keyboards, and there's not a guitar in sight is even vaguely appealing to you, then this is definitely your album. I'd expound further on the topic of how much I love it, but it might be embarrassing. My biggest problem with it is that it's an absolute space hog. It eats up an amazing amount of disk space, because it stores all of those nice-looking graphics. I'm not particularly enthused about the user interface. I don't necessarily want to see 'shelves' of my CDs and books, and I don't care if the entry on the shelf looks like the book that's on my real bookshelf. It also means that, for the stuff that I can't easily get a graphic for (that is, anything that's not in Amazon.com), it looks really out-of-place. That said, I do like the ease of entry for the items that are in Amazon.com (which, to be fair, is significant proportion of what I own). >In that mind, I recently discovered MyMusic Personal Librarian (for the >Mac and PC). You will Find Me still listening to the sampler weeks after receiving it. The title track was initially, and remains, my favorite. I had no idea what it was even about, but the Ninth Wave connection makes perfect sense to me. When I first got the CD (Thanks Vickie!), I dimmed the lights, donned the earphones, and entered bliss. Each and every song grabbed me instantly. I can't say that about MWABT. That album took a few listens to sink in (I love that album now, btw). Actually, when I first heard "Find Me", "The Chosen One" and "Fall" I was a little shocked because I heard each one of those live, and the album versions are different. The tempo on "Fall" really startled me at first. I kept thinking, "Come on Happy, speed it along" because I was so used to listening to the live version from the living room concert she did here. Now the album version seems completely normal. I just listened to the live version and now *it* seems sped up. I really love Happy's use of the piano on a number of the tracks. Sure, I'm a sucker for a chick and a piano (I know it's not her playing), but her voice melds beautifully with it, and the arrangements work well. I think with this album she has found a complementary blend of acoustic instrumenation and electronica. Find Me is another fine example of Happy's genious, creativity, and perfection. I can't wait for the full album! Yay, Happy! But I always perform best when kicked in the ass and given a deadline, so here we go. :) Quick review: I like it quite a bit, and can't wait to hear the whole thing. My favorite tracks (i.e. the ones I most often hit "repeat" on when listening in the car) are "Charlie", "One And Many", and "She Won't Go", i.e. the most kickass songs. They rank right up there with Happy's best, and musically the presence of Bon Lozaga and Hansford Rowe are very much felt, even if I'm not 100% sure if they're even playing on those songs. I also like "Can't Let Go" a lot, though I can't decide yet if I prefer the live version to the recorded one. Right now they're running neck-and-neck. I have to say that "The Chosen One" could safely have been left off -- in fact, I usually skip it. Musically it's lovely, but lyrically ... well, it just sounds like a childishly whiny song to me, especially now that we know that she and Bob are engaged. I've felt that way about it since the very first time I heard Happy perform it live, and I was secretly hoping she'd never get around to recording it. I also need to go back and listen to "Find Me", because it's never registered in my brain long enough to notice that it has lyrics, never mind that there might be a Ninth Wave connection there. From a production standpoint I'm reminded most of _BtC_ and _Equipoise_, which I like. _MWABT_ has its moments, but it's not my favorite ... I like Happy's voice as part of a bit more organic construction, I guess. I know there's still plenty of programming on this CD, but I think it works better here, what with the live drums and percussion. And Happy's voice has never sounded better. She will never cease to amaze me with what she can do with that voice. It's my turn to sit in on Wild Woman Radio today (WNHU 88.7 FM in the New Haven area, sadly not yet streaming online), and I will definitely be playing "One And Many" again. (Anyone else think the backing vocals on this song sound rather Bulgarian?) So there you have it ... yet another satisfied ecto customer. :) Big thanks again to brni for picking this up for us at the Tin Angel!! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Mar 2005 11:06:14 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: Find Me Sampler I have a mish-mash post working but I have to jump on this.
