Joe ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2005 18:04:17 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: FA re-cap I was just up in Montreal for Folk Alliance. There were a few other ectofolk there. I didn't see as many of any of them as I'd have liked, but it's always fun to cross paths with people. Good to see you all again! Here are some of the highlights for me. There was so much amazing world music this year. I ditched a lot of the folkies to see showcase after showcase with brilliant international performers. Here are some of my faves: Pat Humprhies and Sandra O (Emma's Revolotion). I just saw them do one song, but they managed to quell a noisy room that had been ignoring everyone else and turn it into a singalong. Made me take notice. Anyone know these guys? The Duhks: A surefire hit, as I have always loved every set I've seen by the Dunks. Highly recommended. They mix so many different styles and have great musicians and singers. Celtic, French-Canadian, Americana. A very distinctive sound. Wendy McNeill: Does anyone know her? She's Canadian and I hadn't heard of her. Magenta hair and accordion. A very quirky presence with excellent songs and a wry perspective on things. - -Annie Gallup: We've had Annie do a house concert and I've seen her perform before. I usually try to see mostly new people at FA, but I wandered into a room where Annie was playing and it was too compelling to leave. She writes the most compelling and convoluted story songs I've ever heard. They really are poetry. She's an excellent guitarist and has a very unique perspective on things. Rickie Lee Jones heading in a whole different direction. Vhasi Mahlsela : A very moving South AFrican singer and guitarist Karen & Helene: A Danish duo who covered a wide range of Danish styles. Paul & Storm: 2 guys who were kind of a mini Barenaked Ladies. A real hoot. Penelope Swales: I'd seen her mentioned here a number of times and was glad to get to see her perform. Her songs were full of political and historical content, but were never preachy. The Wailin' Jennys: First time seeing the Jennys with Annabelle Chvostek (sp?) instead of Cara. AC sang great and the band sounded excellent. Cara's whackiness and humor were definitely missed though. Pete Morton: Excellent songwriting from a very down-to-earth Brit. The Buccanneers: good natured folk group from Canada. Corinne West: Solid Americana singer Anais Mitchell: Folky with Egyptian roots. Had some very interesting songs with very personal political content. Ellis: Just saw one song, which made me curious about her music Zoe Speaks: Ditto Anna Wolfe: Our old local favorite :) Oiver: Fron an Island that is in the suburbs of Iceland! (Faro Island) Didn't see much. She sings in Swedish, Faro, Icelandic and English on her CD. I saw a steady stream of great world music too! The big World Music shows. There were top notch bands that I wasn't giddy about for stylistic, rather then talent. These were all incredible. Most Ectoey Kiran Ahluwillia: Juna award winner for best traditional folk album. Sang Persian love songs, which were sometimes a bit difficult. But she had a way of pulling everyone in. Dobet Gnahore: Wild women fronting a band from the Ivory Coast. Very compelling to watch. Pharoah's Daughter. NYC hybrid group fronted by three women. Most songs in Hebrew or Yiddish. A very interesting, unique sound. Lhasa: I think everyone on ecto needs to get Lhasa's albums. She was a breathtaking singer. She had a little bit of the presence of Bjork, but seemed closer to the cabaret sounds of Tom Waits. She sang in English, Spanish and French. I keep playing her CD on KUNM because I don't have it and it's a way for me to listen to it. I'm sure some people must have this one. The only CD I feel like I HAVE to buy after being at FA. Some samples off her sadly sparse web site: http://www.lhasadesela.ca/ neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Mar 2005 23:41:25 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: FA re-cap Hi, Neal recounted: >I was just up in Montreal for Folk Alliance. It was great to see Neal, Jeff, and Carolyn again. (Jess Byers, I heard you were there too -- sorry our paths didn't cross.) >Pat Humprhies and Sandra O (Emma's Revolotion). We had them on the Main Stage at the New Haven Folk Festival last year. I didn't get to see more than a song and a half of their set that night because my job was out in the lobby -- from what I heard they are very old-school protest-song folkies, which may or may not be one's cup o'tea. They got a tremendous response from the crowd, though, and sold a *ton* of CDs afterwards. I do know that they are very nice people. I ran into them in the airport right when I got into Montreal, and we had a nice conversation in the Bureau de Change line. :) >The Duhks: A surefire hit, as I have always loved every set I've seen by >the Dunks. Highly recommended. They mix so many different styles and >have great musicians and singers. Celtic, French-Canadian, Americana. A >very distinctive sound. I hadn't heard of them before they got put on my "to check out" list for the conference ... and of course I didn't get to check out half of the people on that list, the Duhks included. :/ I'm taking note of your endorsement, though! >-Annie Gallup: We've had Annie do a house concert and I've seen her >perform before. I saw her wandering around the exhibition hall, but didn't get a chance to see her perform. I haven't seen her since she was at our house, come to think of it. >Paul & Storm: 2 guys who were kind of a mini Barenaked Ladies. A real hoot. I saw them singing backup for Billy Jonas, and I got the Barenaked Ladies thing even from that. I wanted to see more, but again with the not having a chance. Speaking of Billy Jonas, he was one of my finds of the weekend. The man is a genius. He is literally a one-man band, with homemade percussion instruments both all over his body and at his feet and surrounding him, not to mention a lovely voice singing lyrics ranging from the incredibly silly to the deeply poignant. >Penelope Swales: I'd seen her mentioned here a number of times and was >glad to get to see her perform. Her songs were full of political and >historical content, but were never preachy. I got a package from her US agent -- I have yet to listen to the CD, but I heard her as I walked by a showcase room and was quite intrigued by her voice. >The Wailin' Jennys: First time seeing the Jennys with Annabelle Chvostek >(sp?) instead of Cara. AC sang great and the band sounded >excellent. Cara's whackiness and humor were definitely missed though. They're one of the groups I'm most sorry to have missed. :( >Ellis: Just saw one song, which made me curious about her music I hope to have Ellis in for a house concert soon. I'm not sure how to describe her music -- it's folky/singer-songwritery, but not run-of-the-mill at all. She's got an amazing voice and is quite the guitarist and writer, not to mention she is a wonderful young lady. >Pharoah's Daughter. NYC hybrid group fronted by three women. Most songs >in Hebrew or Yiddish. A very interesting, unique sound. I don't know how I managed not to know they were at FA until after I got back home -- I definitely would've blown something else off to catch them. *sigh* Here are my highlights. Most of them are from the MPress Records Showcase Room, since I had "MPress Records" on my name badge and thus spent most of my time there. - -- the Sloan Wainwright Band performing two feet in front of me, and pulling out a song they hadn't played in forever ("The Song Inside") just because I asked for it. :) - -- Rachael Sage and Chris Pureka song-swapping (any and all Melissa Ferrick fans need to check Chris Pureka out, she ROCKS) - -- Rachael Davis and Jake Armerding jamming (again two feet in front of me) - -- Zoe Lewis' entire set. The woman is an absolute RIOT, not to mention a genius. - -- realizing that the woman who had been sitting in the back of the room all evening *really* getting into everything that was going on was none other than Cris Williamson Oh yeah, and I got to see someone named Rachael Sage perform a ton over the course of the weekend, too. She doesn't suck. ;) Other highlights of other showcases included: - -- Melissa Ferrick in the Peppermint room. It's not every day that one gets to see her perform in a hotel room with seven other people there. :) - -- A very cool Native American brother/sister duo called Digging Roots. Bluesy and funky, a lot of fun. - -- Luke Doucet, former member of Sarah McLachlan's touring band (some old-time Fumblers lurking out there may remember the good old days of "use the force, Luke!" ;), now fronting his own band called Veal. I'm not too big on Veal's recorded stuff, but solo with a beat-up acoustic guitar he was great fun. Apparently he's going to be touring the US a lot later on this year, and he was really excited to learn that I host house concerts. Overall the weekend was insanity, but also a lot of fun. I say that even though I don't think I got more than 10 hours of sleep over the four nights I was there... the pinnacle of which was the jazz/reggae fusion band (complete with Ornette Coleman-esque sax) that struck it up right outside our door at 4 am Sunday morning. Good times. %) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2005 22:16:46 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: FA re-cap >Speaking of Billy Jonas, he was one of my finds of the weekend. I can second the Billy Jonas recommendation. I've seen him in years past, so he wasn't new to me. The man can do amazing things with a garbage can and some plastic jugs. >I don't know how I managed not to know they were at FA until after I >got back home -- I definitely would've blown something else off to >catch them. *sigh* They were a Strictly Mundial showcase at Club Soda. Two blocks east of the hotel and surrounded by strip clubs and sex shops. And falafel shops :) >-- Rachael Davis and Jake Armerding jamming (again two feet in front of me) How was Jake? Last year we were told by several people that we just had to see him. And when we did, he was playing with a banjo player who completely overshadowed him. He made a weak impression, though all the same people still told me I had to see him this year. Didn't happen though. neal np: plow to the end of the row - Adrienne Young & Little Sadie (engaging Americana & one of the prettiest CD packages I've seen in a while) nr: Brick Lane - Monica Ali ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Mar 2005 00:31:02 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: FA re-cap Hi, Neal inquired: >How was Jake? He's played with Rachael Davis before, but she told me afterwards that she couldn't believe just how good he was in that set. His solo stuff doesn't do much for me -- it's pretty standard singer/songwriter fare. But I'd hire him to play fiddle in my band any day. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #60 **************************
