(Sorry...I just switched email programs, and I appear to have accidentally nuked a few messages in the process.) Whoever it was: thank you, thank you, thank you. Jenny Schaub is a world-class vocalist, the arrangements are stunning, and my jaw is just generally on the floor. I can already tell that I'll be listening to the s/t release, which I found used via Amazon, for many years to come. A nice link I found concerning them, from a site that also seems worth checking out in general (apologies if it's been mentioned before): http://www.musicaldiscoveries.com/digest/digest.php?a=viewr&id=60 Sadly, westofeden.com, which used to be their website, appears to be defunct (though Google has cached at least a few of its pages), and a regular Google search isn't helping much either. While I'm going to keep investigating, any other tips on how one might track down let's just say every album they've ever released? Ethan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 20:35:38 +1300 From: Karen Hester Subject: dresden war pigs Hmm, have only seen their studio album here, the standard live one was only available at their show and sure haven't come across a NZ release. The concert here was the standard setlist, with 'war pigs' and 'hit me baby one more time', though with a cover of NZer Peter Jeffries' 'electricity' which was intense. I haven't been to many concerts lately so wasn't prepared for the number of people recording it with their cellphones, with the screen lights on. As Anna Maria's said, her Small Fires CD is very nice. It was released a few years ago, and re-released, I believe, when she came under the management wing of Nettwerk. Adrienne's been supporting Jane Siberry on numerous tour dates for about a year now, so, no doubt, the pair have formed a solid friendship. She's a very cool person, and contributes to her home community of Vancouver, Canada with regular hosting of a singer-songwriter showcase, among other things. There's mp3 samples and plenty more info @ http://www.adriennepierce.com (For something darkly atmospheric give a listen to her musical interpretation of Lorna Crozier's poem "Death by Water".) cheers, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2005 03:16:59 -0500 From: "Michael Quinn" Subject: RE: Dresden war pigs This page: http://thebrigade.net/mp3.htm has a lot of great live Dresden Dolls MP3s you can download for free. I've appended an abbreviated copy of my original post here. A week later, I'll still loving West of Eden's music. "Hold Your Horses" is not only playing over and over again on my CD player, but I find myself singing the song (hopefully just to myself ) all day long. There was no lack of sad love songs recommended by Ecto members -- more than enough to keep us teary-eyed for weeks. These included songs like Second Avenue by Lisa Moscatiello, St. Mary's of Regret by Susan Werner, Ariel by October Project, and Steer by the Stars by Beth Patterson. I've found another lovely, but sad song by a group that's new to me. The band is West of Eden, www.westofeden.com, and their supremely melancholy song is The Boy From Yesterday. The lyrics to The Boy From Yesterday start this way: "Where is he now, the boy from yesterday/He stole my heart and then he walked away/I must have told him that I loved him/Such a stupid thing to do/Because the boy from yesterday he didn't want to know." West of Eden's CDs have been on heavy rotation on my machine for several days. It's not just their outstanding lyrics that make this band so special; the sound of Jenny Schaub's voice is among the most beautiful out there. I've always been partial to well-enunciated lyrics sung by a exquisitely stunning voice, especially if those lyrics are poignant and smart. [snip] West of Eden is a Swedish band that performs what's best described as nouvelle/progressive Celtic pop. They sing in English and if you hadn't known beforehand, you'd swear they were from Ireland or the UK. If you like October Project, Vienna Teng, Capercaillie, Eddi Reader, Dar Williams, Equation, or Dido (to name a few) then you'll like West of Eden. West of Eden's CDs can be hard to find in the US. "Shamrock Hotel" (the only song you mention that I've heard so far, though that's soon to be fixed) is a tall drink of water indeed. When her voice swoops into that final chorus at the 3:32 mark...whoa. From that album, I'm also finding myself particularly in love with "This Piece of Earth" (a quiet anthem to individualism with a truly spectacular piece of modulation as a bonus), "I Don't Care" (which is just too silly and fun not to dance around the room to), and "King" (which gets a little overdramatic, but I'm generally a sucker for that, so...) I could probably do without most of the songs sung by Martin Schaub. Whether it's his admittedly fine voice or the material or both -- I'm still working on figuring that out -- there's something uncomfortably Christopher-Crossish about songs like "Ripperton Road." Fortunately, they're in the minority. Ethan Bill Adler wrote: >That was me who mentioned West of Eden the other week.
