After all, I can no more tell who a person truly is by reading a 1000 word interview than I can by listening obsessively to their albums. That being said, I was stunned and excited to pick up my roommate's latest copy of Bust (meant to be a sort of Cosmopolitan for DIY 20-something feminists). There was Bjork on the cover, looking absolutely beautiful. I picked it up and leafed through, and there was Tori as well! Considering the magazine's bias, it was fascinating to see the differences in how Bjork and Tori addressed the issues of creativity and motherhood. Bjork calls herself an artist; Tori calls herself a songwriter. Bjork seems to compartmentalize herself into various roles, with highest priority given to herself as artist - and those other parts, those other roles, are not to be shared with the public! Tori seems to subscribe to the "all at once" school of thought, in which she seems to view motherhood as an essentially transformative experience, and if others have a problem reconciling the mother/whore dilemma, then too bad for them! They both briefly discuss their ideas of feminism. Bjork (unsurprisingly) rejects the label. She also gets pissed off when asked about her boyfriend, claiming that men are never asked by journalists how their girlfriends/wives/children inform their art. She seems to have a point there, but Barney has had to put up with ad nauseum speculations made by those who don't know any better that he is only famous because he impregnated her. Tori says she takes the earth as her teacher; Bjork says that she spends lots of time in her own head. When asked what she enjoys about being famous, Bjork says, "On of my favorite things is to be able to have whatever instruments I want in my music. When people know who you are, you can ask a yodeler from Switzerland to come over tomorrow to sing in your song, and he'll say yes, and he comes, and you can pay him. That's quite a privilege." ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #34 **************************
