Anyway - in the past year or so we left the US (and yes, it really is worth the effort!) to take up residence here in Toronto. I don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier but now that we're not living in a yurt in the woods or even a small ozarks town, we can actually get out and see some live music! Also, I'm really wanting to get some new independent music but now that I don't have a credit card and don't have a US dollar chequing account it is a pain to get anything from south of the border so there is an advantage to finding local Canadian artists - I can see them in person and pay cash for the CDs! All that said, I was wondering if anyone had some recommendations for artists who routinely play in the greater Toronto area. Are there any other ectophiles who live in and about Toronto? - -Todd todd@quirkynomads.com http://www.quirkynomads.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2005 23:33:08 -0800 From: damon of the living dead Subject: Re: Toronto artists and ectophiles hey todd - have i failed to mention arlene bishop to you so far? http://www.arlenebishop.com/ she is incredible... though i haven't seen her live. she's from the maritimes but i think she lives in toronto now. there's also rebecca timmons - i don't know if she's still active. and cowboy junkies are from toronto i think. and the worms (of the arrogant variety) are from kingston. oh, and sarah slean will be there on february 17, according to ticketmaster, and i believe on the eastern leg of her tour she's performing with jorane (lucky dogs). tickets are only $15, probably double that by the time ticketmaster has its way with you. i hadn't heard sarah before but when i found out she was coming i listened to the samples on her site (http://sarahslean.com/) and am hooked. i highly recommend you go. there are tonnes more too, i'm sure. - -damon On 23 Jan, todd@quirkynomads.com wrote: > Hi everyone, > > I've been off and on this list (mostly off due to the inability to deal > with the volume). I've been hungry for new music lately - I came across ecto after being absolutely smacked across the face by Marianne Faithfull's "Guilty." I've been greedily delving into the reviews and recommendations. I listen to a very wide variety of music. My tastes tend towards the personal and individual. At parties, I always provide the soundtrack. I'd like to share some good music that moves me, some of which falls a little outside the main focus of the ectoguide. For instance: Lyrics Born "Later That Day" (2003) - hands down one of the best hip hop albums I've ever heard. Japanese-American MC Tom Shimura (aka Asia Born, aka Lyrics Born, aka LB) anchors the San Francisco hip hop underground with pals in the Quannum Collective, along with Lateef the Truth Speaker, Gift of Gab, DJ Shadow, and Chief Xcel. He's poised on the verge of recognition - his "Callin Out" was recently used in a Diet Coke commercial with Adrian Brody (though I think he wears his heart too much on his sleeve for mainstream success). The universe meant for me to find this when I did - I heard the commercial and grooved with it without knowing who it was, then I came across the album and immediately recognized his voice, and recognized how much more he has to offer besides groove. His voice is a velvet, gravel growl that's sexy and soulful, with a flow so fast, lyrical, controlled, but FUN that he reminds you of Dizzy Gillespie as an MC. He has charisma in spades. This concept album isn't perfect, but its imperfections make it all the more endearing. It blends rock, jazz, soul, and funk into a healthy and nourishing brew. Heart and caring like his is the cure for what ails the world. With wife Joyo Velarde on "Rise and Shine" he turns in what is, to me, the best song of the album, a heartfelt "to be or not to be" plea with himself to keep trying, even in the face of the evil and apathy in the world. "Early this morning, I had a little dream, I could not forget, In a world that seems so broken-hearted, It's time for me to be out, be on my way." Joyo's voice is heavenly, and I'd rather have her singing me awake than any alarm clock in the world. Even the requisite hip-hop skit (U-Ass Bank) is truly funny, but more importantly serves an important part in the structure of the album. Blackalicious's Gift of Gab makes an appearance on "Cold Call," on it's face, a condemnation of telemarketers, but it the tradition of folk music everywhere, deeper truths are revealed in the everyday, though rarely with this much sense of fun. Check out the complex interplay of internal rhymes! LB's friend Lateef the truth speaker shows up on "The Last Trumpet," a blistering condemnation of American domestic and foreign policy that gives me chills every time I hear it. Not only is their sincerity very moving, but the song is musically superior. LB's chemistry with Lateef is truly special; their point and counterpoint builds over bottom-heavy funk, Joy's urgent vocalizations, and an echoey-acoustic guitar to a climax that is a trumpet call to action. Yet, taken in its entirety, the album manages not to take itself too seriously. LB really just wants to throw his knees up and have a good time with his friends. Joy reminds him to "Stop Complaining," and his "Calling Out" could anchor the best block party you've ever had. Check it out. It is a true database, with searchable fields. I enter the musicians, and even songwriters, and I can search over all of them. I can search based on song titles too. How does this work in that regards? I looked at the sample libraries and they didn't seem to be able to add that sort of extra information. I didn't try to search over what it did index though. Some of the tracks feel "overproduced" to me. It feels like an album created to appeal to the mass market. There is nothing new or daring. There is nothing challenging or "controversial". It makes me wonder if this album was influenced by the same pressures that censored the "Sunny Florida" DVD. I will buy it anyway, but it feels a bit like "Factory Tori" to me. - -- "If any sign of pleasure is exhibited, report to me and it will be prohibited. So shall it be!
