I just wanted to add that I thought Doug was a bit harsh... I lived in London UK for 10 years and so have experience with the 'commute'. In London, as in many huge cities, people often don't connect - they don't look at each other, don't acknowledge each other. When I first returned to the much smaller Victoria (Vancouver Island) I was in London mode - I found it strange that people were looking at me and actually making conversation! I had forgotten how to do this! So I don't know, Doug, if you live in a huge city like London - Im not denying you have a very good point, but I think the locale can make a difference to how dependent one becomes on ones 'personal entertainment device'..... The boy and I have been checking it out, too. (The boy is especially interested, since it will give him a good excuse to buy the iSight that he's been lusting after.) Our problem with it is that it doesn't automatically handle non-US items very well. A good 3/4s of our DVDs were purchased in Australia, and about 1/2 of our books are from outside the US. I won't even begin to approach the CD problem, given how many of them are promos or simply not found at Amazon. The next version is in beta, and addresses some of the issues, but not quite enough for me to run out and buy it (and the attendant iSight for the boy). Maybe we'll write a plug-in, in our copious spare time (possibly right after we do the rotary cell phone that he found on /. last night). /nm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2005 12:38:36 -0500 (EST) From: Bernie Mojzes Subject: Re: Here's the deal Right. Obviously if people CAN make it to the show, they should. Venues book on expected revenues, and if an artist can't fill the venue, they'll book those who will. Artists like Happy really need and deserve our support. Regarding the CD, obviously, people who are at the show should get first crack at owning the disk. I made a list of people requesting disks - 12 so far that I know of. I don't know how many we'll actually be able to snag. I need people to send me their real names and shipping addresses. I don't have a paypal account, and am not really interested in setting one up, so it'd need to be check or other other arrangement. Of course, this will depend somewhat on availability, and on Happy's own thoughts on the issue. brni On Fri, 21 Jan 2005, Vickie Mapes wrote: > Sorry I didn't get back to Ecto right away. And living in Minneapolis (St. Paul, really, but I didn't want to confuse anyone) I figured I'd have to settle for the chance that someone might pick one up for me. But I'm Lutheran and sometimes shy, so I didn't want to ask. *grin* But now, thanks to cheap fares from Hotwire, I don't have to. Am I crazy? Maybe. (Which is to say, Yes.) But.it's Happy, for crying out loud! Now, I'm not in a financial position to fly about the country attending concerts left and right on a whim. But Happy and her music truly mean something to me, and I want to support her however I can. I suspect a lot of you are like that as well. The reason I'm writing this isn't to be one of those "I'm going to Happy's show and you're not!" types. I'm wriitng because I'm hoping it will be enough of a nudge for anyone else who is contemplating the thought of making a weekend trip to support her. Sure, we can easily "consume" her work by buying her music ... but if you can, why not go one step further and attend the show? Enough rambling from me.
