Joanna Newsom: The Milk-Eyed Mender Ecto priority: Must Have I'm listening to it now as I'm writing, and my general impressions are still in the process of formation. Her voice is somewhat country-ish, but absolutely unique. Her songwriting is personal and intelligent, with a stripped down and raw performance quality that reminds me somewhat of Tori, but without treading the same ground. Unclassifiable, really. I'm listening to Peach, Plum, Pear now -- and I'm really compelled to say that she's probably a goddess. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 12:02:48 -0500 From: Mike Goldman Subject: Joanna Newsom - video I found this: http://www.dragcity.com/video/JNewsom_sm2.mov Goddess. Her voice was "not for everyone" then, it was strange and somewhat shrill, and honestly it took me a year or two to get used to. (Okay, that was 17 years ago. I've always been listening since.) I can send the html template to fill in or you could just look at the site to see what we include. For the record, its: * Country of origin: [where born, now live if there's a permanent change] * Type of music generally: [See genre list on site, includes all the vague genre terms so we can do what we can to give a general idea] * Status: [Most recent release, title, year, or year band dissolved] * See also: [web links] * Comparisons: [names of artists/bands in a kind of recommended-if- you-like sense] * Covers/own material: * General comments: [general things about the artist that aren't particular to one album] * Comments about live performance: [concert reviews] * Recommended first album: [either favourites or where to start] * Recordings: [list of albums, sometimes includes singles] * Further info: [sometimes not included, has info that doesn't fit elsewhere, like compilations & soundtracks they're on, video releases, mailing list info, contact info] * For each individual album, we include: --Title --Release info [year--label--catalogue number] --Availability: [wide, wide in U.S., see website, etc.] --Ecto priority: [Highly recommended, recommended, only for fans, etc.] --Group members: [name--instruments] --Guest artists: [name--instruments] --Produced by: --Comments: [about the album] That's it! There are some people who steadily add artists to the Ectophiles' Guide (thanks to you all, reviewers and editors alike!), but I do most of it and I'm too busy to spend more than a few hours a week on it, so feel free to do this for artists you like who aren't onsite yet. I'll tidy the files up and add any comments that I have on file for the artist/band. BTW, if anyone is interested in the unpaid glory of reviewing (hey, you get to keep the discs), please get in touch with me off-list. We have a large backlog of discs for review, particularly singer-songwriter discs. Requires a time commitment and a general ability to be open-minded about what you hear. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net .... http://www.sff.net/people/neile Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music . http://www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ...... http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 15:34:17 -0500 From: Mike Goldman Subject: Re: Joanna Newsom / Ectophiles' Guide Neile Graham wrote: >For the record, we're happy if anyone wants to gather info for us to put >together a page for any artist. So in the interest of time, I'll make this announcement here. You may already know that Happy is performing in Philadelphia on the 29th this month. Well, she's manufactured a short run of pre-release CD's that will be for sale at the Tin Angel show ONLY. The full-length CD is finished, but the artwork and pressing still have to be done. So in order to have something for the listeners in time for the show, she decided to do this special edition CD. The artwork is different, there are 8 songs on it (11 on the full-length release) and Happy will sign copies at the show if requested. The CD's will be $15 a piece. We won't be selling this item after this initial show, so if you can't make it to the show, then maybe you can ask someone who is going to get you a copy. That just about wraps it up. If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me at ken@auntiesocialmusic.com or kosterhaudt@aol.com. Thanks! I just finished the first listen. It is very good but doesn't hit me nearly the same force as Scarlet's Walk or Choirgirl Hotel did on first listen. I don't think is light and poppy or anything if that's what you're worried about. There seems to be kind of a subdued melancholy about a lot of the songs. My first impression is that there are quite a few good songs but none that immediately stand out as *great*/ "Subdued" seems to be the one best adjective to describe. It is certainly miles away from the anger and heartbreak of "Little Earthquakes" so I'm sure at least a few and probably most of the songs will grow on me more with repeated listens and once I either get a hold of the lyrics or decipher them more. At worst it may be remembered as one of her weaker albums but it is still better than at least 90% of the other music out there that I've heard so it's a relative thing, and yes I will buy it when it comes out. I agree that SWB is pretty bland-sounding (although the whole track is better than the 30-second clip that was on the site). I like the rest of the album a lot better. That said, it's 19 tracks, and some of the tracks on my initial listens have been kinda weak. In a few months, if this continues, I might end up making my own personal copy of "The Beekeeper" that's only 12 tracks, and pretend that the other songs are bee-sides. ;) /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 22:35:30 EST From: Toriamosrising@aol.com Subject: Re: New Tori Amos leaked!
