The Troubadour is a pretty funky little place, restaurant/cafe upstairs and awkwardly-shaped yet intimate club downstairs. She had a damned good crowd, a gratifying surprise (where do they all come from?!) and it was a joy to see her. A simple, lovely, beautiful set, executed with grace and passion. What more could be asked for? A big cheers to Vienna and also to Marika, her cellist, who added sublime vocals, and to Jason, without whose request for gigs in London I'd never have stumbled upon this. As it happens, I have now been to more gigs with Jason than I have with anyone else, except for my girlfriend. No offence, Jason, but that's a spooky thought. ;-) If you're out there, Vienna, thanks again, and COME BACK SOON!!! Yay! woj, Mike Curry, lurker Jenn and I saw Vienna in NYC on Sunday night before she headed across the pond. She played at The Bitter End, and had a nice crowd there too. Marika (who had rushed downtown from an earlier gig with 2 Foot Yard, which woj and I definitely would've also attended if we'd known about it :P) also accompanied her on cello and vocals. The set included a wonderfully jazzy new song called "Boy At The Piano" that I need to hear again, and often. I was also happy to hear "My Medea", which remains my favorite song from _Warm Strangers_. It was great to see and hear Vienna again -- it had been too long, since I wasn't around the last time she played in NY. It was also fun to hang out afterwards, too. I love it when a show turns into an ectogathering once the musician leaves the stage. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 17:17:02 -0800 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Re: Vienna in London On Jan 11, 2005, at 4:59 PM, meredith wrote: > Yay! woj, Mike Curry, lurker Jenn and I saw Vienna in NYC on Sunday > night before she headed across the pond. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's one of her oldest songs -- not quite "Say Uncle" old, but pretty old nonetheless. She's pulled it out at probably about a third of the shows that I've seen, so you've definitely got a good chance of hearing it again, though I'd be fairly surprised (based on the considerable self-deprecation with which she tends to introduce it) if it were to turn up on one of her studio albums anytime soon. > I was also happy to hear "My Medea", which remains my favorite song > from _Warm Strangers_. Yeah, mine too. Yeah, she played that one both times I saw her last year, the first time back in May. It is indeed an older one. Here's what I wrote in my LJ entry about that May show, based on notes I took during the show: "...was also written in high school, about a boy in jazz choir whom she had a crush on. She purposely put into the song all of the jazz cliches she could think of in attempt to replicate how he would play it." >>I was also happy to hear "My Medea", which remains my favorite song from >>_Warm Strangers_. >Yeah, mine too. Same here. At least in my case, I think it's because the song is the one from "Warm Strangers" that, musically, would fit most easily onto "Waking Hour". (I like "Warm Strangers", but to me it doesn't measure up to "Waking Hour", which I love.) I dunno, she had Marika work up a bass part for it, which she played on the cello and it rocked. (Has it always been a very jazzy song? Sounded like she's been applying some of the jazz piano stuff she's been working on...) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 22:07:21 -0500 From: hkhill Subject: more new music Today I heard a cut from a new cd from Ani DiFranco! This will mark the first time in 17 years they have performed a full set of MatM songs since the band played its last show in Toronto in 1987 at The Diamond Club. "We'll be doing a mix of songs from various periods, many of which we haven't done in more than twenty years", says Martha. "The idea is to eventually record the best versions of the selected old songs as a duo with some new material as well and release that on CD and doing this show is a great starting point." Ticket prices and set time to be confirmed. The Drake Hotel is located at 1150 Queen St. W. in Toronto. For more information phone 416.531.5042 / 1.866.372.5386 or visit www.thedrakehotel.ca Updates will also be posted at the official Martha and the Muffins website, www.marthaandthemuffins.com MARTHA JOHNSON GETS CO-WRITING CREDIT ON GERMAN HIT SINGLE When a fan in Germany emailed Martha and the Muffins last summer, indicating that the popular German hip-hop outfit DIE FANTASTISCHEN VIER (The Fantastic Four) had used part of a Muffins song in their hit single TROY , Martha Johnson discovered that major elements of her composition INDECISION (from MatM's 1980 album METRO MUSIC ) had been plagiarized. After she alerted the publisher of INDECISION , Virgin Music Publishing UK, a settlement was reached with DIE FANTASTISCHEN VIER and their publisher, Sony Music Germany. Martha received half the writing credit forTROY while Virgin Music Publishing UK gained 50% of the publishers' share. The singleTROY enjoyed high chart positions in Germany for several weeks last summer and autumn as did the album it was taken from, VIEL. "ICE AGE" UPDATE Warren Stewart, Director of Catalogue Marketing at EMI Music Canada, has confirmed that MatM's third and most sought-after album THIS IS THE ICE AGE will be reissued on CD in spring 2005. Originally released in 1981, this was the first of three ground-breaking albums that MatM recorded with Daniel Lanois, legendary producer of U2, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno and Bob Dylan, among others. In addition to the original track listing, two bonus cuts from the same recording sessions will be included: TWENTY-TWO IN CINCINATTI and I'M NO GOOD AT CONVERSATION , both originally released on vinyl as B-sides. While we're on the subject, I'd love to know if Vienna is still doing her cover of Damien Rice's "Cannonball" in her recent shows. (I first heard it at the _Warm Strangers_ release gig, and it grabbed me so hard that I emailed her, begging her to make it available in some format or another at some point.)
