Bering Strait - a Russian country band with great harmonies, a bluegrass feel, and strong song-writing - --- I think I had them on my list last year... I recommend getting the DVD 'The Ballad of Bering Strait' (you can find it for about $12 online) It's a documentary(a real one, so probably not eligable for a palm d'or) that follows the band from their roots in Russia to their struggle to make it in Nashville, and it includes a concert at Wolf Trap. Very good behind the scenes look at the music business. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2005 15:52:29 -0700 From: Joshua Subject: Imogen Heap / Horse Egads! It's been too long. But recent comments about Immi have compelled me to post. - -= Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself =- If you tune in to KCRW (http://www.kcrw.com) you can catch some of her new material. They're beginning to play some of the finished versions of her tunes ("Headlock" is one I've heard most recently), especially on their almost-nightly show, Metropolis. Also, you can purchase the official mp3 of "Goodnight and Go" from her website (http://www.imogenheap.co.uk) for 79 pence via PayPal. This is the track aired on an episode of "The O.C." back in December. No word on a release date, but she finished mastering the album on her birthday, so it's ready to roll. - -= Horse -= I'm surprised this "bloody-brilliant" Scottish lass hasn't made it into the Guide! Usually when I'm playing her tunes, someone asks if I'm listening to Cher (not likely!) or Annie Lennox (a good possiblity). Her band (which collectively went by the name "Horse" as well) had only one American release from MCA Records around '92 called "God's Home Movie." Her other releases are usually available via Amazon.co.uk, or from her website at http://www.horse-randan.com. For anyone interested, I highly recommend starting with "Both Sides," a live recording from her concert with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. It's the first disc I was exposed to a few years ago, and includes a nice compliation of songs she'd written prior to 1995. You'll probably be compelled to purchase her prior studio albums as I was (just a hunch!) but don't miss out on the superbly sublime "Hindsight ... It's a Wonderful Thing" from 2001. From bluesy rock tune to a tear-inducing ending--complete with choir backup--it's the disc that proves she has staying power. Even if the commercial world pays her no mind. - -Joshua Now with Scrubbing Bubbles! . ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2005 14:59:48 -0800 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: Saucy Monky live in Sunnyvale [Saturday 1/15] Short Attention Span Version - --------------------------------------------- A very Saucy Monky house concert. RSVP. Suggested donation: $10 Saturday, January 15, 2004. 8 p.m. Sharp. Sunnyvale, California 94085 What's going on - --------------------------------------------- Since two was so much fun, I'm doing it again. My first house concert of 2005 will feature the acoustic half of Saucy Monky. Annmarie Cullen and Cynthia Catania will start the new year off right. Your New Year's resolution? Support great music. Start here. About Saucy Monky - --------------------------------------------- Saucy Monky's debut EP _Celebrity Trash_ got noticed with its infectiously catchy "Flicker" and "Don't Wanna Know Your Name." They've followed that up with _Turbulence_, which features more of Annemarie and Cynthia's fab voices and sticks-to-you-like-candy-apples pop. And one crazy cover of ... yes ... "I Touch Myself." While Annmarie (of Dublin, Ireland) and Cynthia (somewhere in New Jersey) found each other by accident, where you will be a few Saturdays from now is completely under your control. Check out Saucy Monky's web site: http://www.saucymonky.com/ FAQ - --------------------------------------------- Q: So what is a house concert, anyway? A: It's a wonderful way to experience music. Acoustic sound, intimate setting. No smoke, no drunks, no obnoxious suits. Q: Where is the concert? A: In my living room. Really. You'll get directions to the house when you RSVP. (hint, hint!) Q: When should I arrive? A: Between 7:30 and 7:59 is good. If you're late, enter via the back door. Q: What about transportation? A: There's plenty of street parking, I live within walking distance of the Caltrain station, and the VTA buses drop you off two blocks away. Q: Can I blog about this concert? A: Sure. Please direct people to RSVP to saucy-lrc@paulschreiber.com. Don't post my other email address on the web for spambots. Q: Who gets the money? A: Annmarie and Cynthia. Every cent. Q: Will they have CDs and merch for sale? A: Indeedy. Q: Who should I bring? A: Bring a friend! Bring a date! Bring your Mom! Bring all three! Q: What should I bring? A: Drinks and snacks will be provided, but if you'd like to bring something to share, I'd be really grateful. If you have folding chairs, let me know. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2005 18:31:42 -0500 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: Imogen Heap / Horse Joshua sez: [re: immi] > No word on a release date, but she finished mastering the album on her > birthday, so it's ready to roll. I am *so* psyched to hear all this talk of the new album. To be honest, I probably listen to _Details_ more than _I Megaphone_, but I don't care if it's solo or with Frou Frou, I just want more, dangnabit! Like Jeff Hanson said in his recent post, I saw Immi when she was touring for the first album. I saw her open for Rufus Wainwright (touring his own eponynmous, though not anagrammed, debut) at the 9:30 club with our own Craig Gidney. I believe I was one of two people in the audience who knew who she was (let alone knowing the songs from the first album) and she really blew me away. I still shiver at the thought of those *screams* during "Rake It In." Wow. > -= Horse -= > I'm surprised this "bloody-brilliant" Scottish lass hasn't made it into > the Guide! I'm sure Horse has been mentioned over the years. She actually had two American releases, as _The Same Sky_ also came out over here. I have a tape of it kicking around somewhere, and I simply can't imagine I didn't mention it, either in the early days of ecto or possibly even on gaffa (though the former is a lot more likely). I also picked up _God's Home Movie_ when it was released, and I know that got mentioned on ecto by me and probably others (from a quick google, it looks like Neal Copperman listed Horse in a n.p. about 7 years ago) Anyway. The point is she's gotten some love around here, but that's no guarantee of an entry...and if you feel strongly about it, talk to Neile about putting one together! jeff n.p. _Dear Enemy_, Dana and Karen Kletter ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2005 21:10:33 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Imogen Heap / Horse >>-= Horse -= >>I'm surprised this "bloody-brilliant" Scottish lass hasn't made it into >>the Guide! > >I'm sure Horse has been mentioned over the years. I mentioned it when I got it and know others did too. But it's been a mighty long time since those albums came out! They used to show up all the time in the throwaway bins at CD stores. I highly recommend people grabbing them if they see them. >n.p. _Dear Enemy_, Dana and Karen Kletter Wow, that's another one I haven't listened to in ages! neal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 00:54:28 -0500 From: "Keith D Cole" Subject: Kate KATE BUSH, QUEEN, DAVID BOWIE, THE CLASH, JOY DIVISION, THE JAM, ROD STEWART, ABC, THE STRANGLERS, SPANDAU BALLET, GEORGE MICHAEL, SIMPLY RED, ANNIE LENNOX, STING, PETER GABRIEL and ELTON JOHN are all on a shortlist of just 25 songs in an attempt to identify the best British song since 1977 with a special award at the UK's award show The Brits going to the winner.
