I'm sure this has been answered already, but Sonny was US representative for Palm Springs CA, where he was mayor. I believe his widow holds the US seat now. Maybe I am imagining things, but wasn't there a draft Bruce Sprinsgteen movement for New Jersey senator back in 2002? It fizzled out. Ah yes, here it is http://www.nme.com/news/101753.htm Todd Pierce Asheville NC nr: American Gods, Neil Gaiman np: Harmonium, Vanessa Carlton __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? She's backed by some virtouso oud and violin playing, and thunderous percussion. Medieval, modern, and magical--for lover of Dead Can Dance and Vas. (She's also gorgeous). Chako of the Japanese band Jack or Jive sometimes sounds a little offkey (which adds makes for some disturbing, off kilter moments), but at her best, she can sound like an Asian Liz Fraser. Her songs are in her private language, and her compositions vacilate between melancholic piano pieces and electro-tribal-ambient pieces. The piano pieces are what I'd imagine Liz would sound like in such a musical setting. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Ah, kind of like Hillary Clinton being Senator from New York, a state she only moved to a week before the candidacy filing deadline. Gotta love carpetbagging. :P I take it MPs in Australia aren't required to actually live in their district, then? >Thanks for all other suggestions. I totally forgot about Sonny Bono, and I >didn't know Paul Simon and Gilberto Gil ever held offices! Actually, it was a very different Paul Simon. Senator Simon was from Illinois, and wore a bow tie every day. I doubt very much he ever wrote a workable song. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2005 09:30:51 -0800 (PST) From: Todd Pierce Subject: Best of 2004 Once again, I seem to have mostly purchased albums released before 2004, as I convert my battered tape collection to CD, or discover albums/artists I missed. For what it's worth here are the albums I bought and have played the most the past year, more or less in order. Maybe only half were actually released in 2004. - -Tori Amos, Scarlet's Walk. Brilliant. The kind of album Kate Bush ought to be doing now. - -Aimee Mann, I'm With Stupid, Bachelor #2, Lost in Space. Why oh why did I stop buying her albums ten years ago? Clever lyrics and catchy tunes. - -Katy Rose, Because I Can. One really angst ridden teenager delivers a rockin' album. - -Rachael Sage, Ballads and Burlesque. A gentler, less splashy album from Ms Sage but still excellent songcrafting. - -Vanessa Carlton, Harmomium. Great use of orchestral instruments such as strings and oboe behind Vanessa's piano playing. The single White Houses gets my vote for most 'can't-get-that-song-out-of-my-head' for the year. - -Tears for Fears, Everyone Loves a Happy Ending. This is much much better than anyone had a right to expect. In a world where the 'beat' seems all important in pop music, this has melody and grace. I like it, my wife likes it, our 7 year old likes it, our 3 year old likes it, you can't argue with that. - -Charlotte Martin, On Your Shore. Powerful alternative female pop/rock, Charlotte is coming into her own now. - -Karen Matheson, Time to Fall. A early morning, calm and soothing, get the day going album from the Capercaillie lead singer. - -Connie Dover, The Border of Heaven. Celtic tunes of the American old west, sung in a heavenly voice. - -Bonnie McKee, Trouble. What young female pop singers should be doing nowadays - writing their own songs about their own experiences, and singing them with their own voices - instead of having to lip synch or sing old Melissa Manchester tunes. Now for 2005, we just need new albums by Kate, Happy, and Maria McKee... Todd Pierce Asheville NC __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - now with 250MB free storage.
