I gave them a cartoon summary of the play's plot. Now, the writers included little jokes in it, and the students were laughing at them until they came to one they didn't understand. As Malcolm, Macduff, etc. hewed down branches of trees to make as if Birnam Wood were moving towards Dunsinane Hill, one soldier said, "I feel like Kate Bush." "Who's Kate Bush?" asked one boy. Another boy replied immediately, acting as if the first boy was really stupid not to know the answer. "George Bush's wife!" he said -- and he wasn't joking. Luckily, there were two (only two out of twenty-seven) students who knew who Kate Bush's true identity. I worry about these young people today. I may bring in a CD or a video just to let me see/hear a minute or two of Kate Bush. :) Oh, when I told this story to a colleague, she spluttered, "In his dreams!!" in reference to the idea that Kate Bush was George Bush's wife. The only one I can think of is Shakira who is (or was) involved with some political figure in some South American country - I can't remember any details and I can't be bothered to Google at the moment. And unlike movie industry which in the US at least seems like an excellent entry for political career, so far the music industry didn't produce any notable politicians... I wonder why? Because sex-n-drugs mix well with rock-n-roll, but not so well with politics, is my guess. I wonder why? Well, Gilberto Gil is (or has been?) Brazil's Minister of Culture, which probably counts. And I vaguely recall that both US Senator Orrin Hatch and John Ashcroft have released albums. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Jan 2005 17:46:00 -0800 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Linux CD Collection Management Software? Heh, I did say "notable politicians"! While Peter Garrett is undeniably a politician, his actual record in this role is not exactly impressive. Failed to get anywhere running as independent, now sold out to Labour who assigned him the seat of Kingsford Smith - a safe seat that Labour was guaranteed to win no matter what. The only link between Peter Garrett and Kingsford Smith is that he'd have to drive through it on his way to the airport, but who cares... Labour just wanted him as a figure to attract the youth and green vote. So yes, he is now an MP, but as a cog in the machine of Labour Party where I doubt he will be of any influence. He totally lost my respect after this move which I see as pure cashing in on his reputation in exchange for safe income as an MP (a term in parliament means you're set for life, and I mean, in considerable comfort!) Thanks for all other suggestions. I totally forgot about Sonny Bono, and I didn't know Paul Simon and Gilberto Gil ever held offices! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2005 22:32:54 -0800 From: Allan Anderson Subject: Carina Round cheap at Amoeba Records Californians, make your way to the clearance section of Amoeba.
