Details here: http://www.dnalounge.com/flyers/2005/01/20-ninahagen.html She will also perform at the Edwardian Ball (inspired by Edward Gorey!) on Jan. 22: http://www.edwardianball.com/ There is also a new Jill Tracy "fan tribe" called Pretty Little Rage at http://jilltracy.tribe.net/ - --Sue Trowbridge ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jan 2005 18:10:40 +0000 From: Adam K Subject: Best of 2004 I've been waiting until the year was truly over (and for when I got back to London) and now it all sounds kind of trivial, compared to global events. Still...here, in no particular order, are my 10 faves for 2004 (do I need to say IMHO? I do? Consider it said): Jonatha Brooke/Back in the Circus: Superbly collection of songs, right down to the unpredictable covers. Can't wait til she comes over to the UK in 2005! Nick Cave/Abbatoir Blues - Lyre of Orpheus: Got it for Xmas, have listened to it a couple of time, and it went right up there in my list. Heartfelt, intelligent mix of the caustic and lyrical Feist/Let it Die: Usually, pastiche makes me hurl. This album, however, has taught me the error of my ways, as each song reveals an affection for the relevant style and a sincere and refereshing approach and delivery. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Eliza Gilkyson/Milk and Honey: Passion, poetry and politics. Can they co-exist? sure as hell can. Mull Historical Society/This is Hope: Another pretty collision of Beach Boys pop with Scottish skewed humour and, on this outing, genuinely moving reflections on recent events. Vienna Teng/Warm Strangers: Brilliant. Utterly brilliant and moving and breathtaking, from start to finish. Tom Waits/Real Gone: I wasn't sure about his last three albums, finding them fairly predictable, but this comes on like a whole new Tom, and manages to make it all sound fresh, vital and new again. Pity about the gig, though. Juliet Turner/Season of the Hurricane: I'm so sorry I missed her gig, but this is damned fine stuff, with her finding confidence to explore different sounds and styles. Peter Hammill/Incoherence: I gave this a hard time on its release, but after the dearth of inspiration on offer from other established artists (see below) I began to reappraise its intelligence and ambition. You can't have too much of that, these days. Patty Griffin/Impossible Dream: Patty doing what she does best, but this time doing it better than she has for a while. A far more consistent album than "1000 Kisses", and utterly enchanting. Bubbling under: jonathan inc/things done and left undone Delays/Faded Seaside Glamour Nerissa and Katryn Neilds/This Town is Wrong The Delgados/Universal Audio Pinback/Summer in Abaddom Wendy Ip/A Different Kind of Life Disappointments: Melissa Ferrick/The Other Side: By now her songs are becoming so predictable they should come in kit form. Sarah Harmer/All of our Days: I've tried with this, I honestly have, but all I get is a pale shadow of her first solo album, with none of the wit, energy or atmosphere. Katell Keineg/High July: A rather flaccid effort from Katell. PJ Harvey/Uh Huh Her: There's some good stuff on here, definitely, but too much of it sounds like she knocked it off as an afterthought during a lunch break. Fiery Furnaces/Blueberry Boat: As an old progrock fan, I have a tolerance for songs that stretch the 10 minute mark. Unfortunately, this stretched my tolerance with its deadpan lack of any emotional commitment and its rambling, repetitive tunes. Maybe I'm getting old... Promising stuff: Amy Wadge/woj: a Welsh singer/songwriter reminiscent of Melissa Etheridge, she even sings in Welsh on one song. Kate Walsh/clocktower park: I was a bit wary of this, at first, finding it a bit underpowered, but it has a really gentle beauty that has definitely grown on me. Tom Baxter/Feather and Stone: This is a must have for fans of Buckley and Drake, as Baxter wears his influences so prominently on his sleeve, every song practically cries out, "Tom! Nick! This one's for you!". Unfortunately, I'm not a fan, and look forward to the day that he shows a little orginality and daring. Best reissues: The Nektar back catalogue, which has me looking forward to the CD reissue of even their weakest album later this year. Worst reissues: Brian Eno's back catalogue. Shame on you, Brian, shame on you. Best films: a toss up between Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I'm Not Scared. Worst: A toss up between the cheap and lazy Lost in Translation and the cheap and lazy Bridget Jones sequel. Next year sees a Jonatha Brooke tour, a Van der Graaf Generator reunion and new releases, hopefully, from both Thea Gilmore and Carina Round. I'd give it all up if the world would just calm down a bit, but music will just have to do. best for 2005, adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jan 2005 20:47:25 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Sleater-Kinney in NYC The newest tour dates announced for Sleater-Kinney ( http://www.sleater-kinney.com ) as part of their pre-CD release tour are: > 2,3 Mar 2005 | New York, NY Mercury Lounge Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2005 15:57:50 +1300 From: Karen Hester Subject: Nightwish That'd be glenn's furia.com site, of course :) http://www.furia.com/twas/search.cgi?terms=nightwish Karen > From: "dave" ......... > First, has this band Nightwish come up on Ecto before?
