Not to mention that even if the death toll keeps rising it is still likely to be less than 135,000 that the Allies managed to wipe out in two nights of bombing Dresden in 1945. It's a fucked up world. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 11:26:36 -0500 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: The Ecto Care Bears My six-year-old daughter just started watching a Care Bears movie. The voice on the opening song sounded very familiar. Could it be....Jane Siberry? Yes it is! I know that she did a song for a Barnie movie. Are there any others out there? I can only hope that Jane has some other songs in this movie. - --Valerie Richardson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 12:41:06 -0600 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: and so it goes... Hi, A man went to an airport and they asked for picture ID. He asked what law said so and they said it was secret. He couldn't go and now is suing Ashcroft to 'open' the law. If your name is David Nelson stay away from airports. Unless you can prove you are not THE David Nelson who is on the no-fly list, you will not fly. A group of David Nelson's are suing the Security Agency, led by a lawyer David Nelson, who has been kept off a dozen flights. Bin Laden is sending tapes. Bush took us elsewhere. Everything is SOP. And to steal from Ayn Rand: Atlas Shrugged the day after Xmas. Just the post Xmas blues, I'll like the world in a few days. bye, KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! Less OT than some, more OT than most... Do any of the Linux folk here have recommendations for software to catalog a CD collection? I've tried gmmusic, but to the extent that I understand how it's blowing up, it seems to be assuming that I have a deep understanding of the PostgreSQL database system that it uses, which I don't. Any suggestions for something simple, ideally freedb aware, and with a useful GUI? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 20:18:42 -0800 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Mac CD collection management software, was: Linux CD Collection Management Software? Joseph Zitt asked about Linux CD collection software, so I'll make the same request for a Mac (OS X). /nm {and I'll pay attention to the Linux recommendations, since I'm running that on my home server anyway} ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Dec 2004 17:14:26 +1100 From: andrew fries Subject: Re: Linux CD Collection Management Software? I see what you mean - gmmusic looks like a nightmare to set up, I can't see much documentation, and the project isn't very active - in fact it looks like it is no longer developed at all. Nevertheless, it appears gmmusic is the only serious contender in this area! There are also applications like Amarok and Rhythmbox - they are basically media players, but with media management capability. Amarok is quite nice; if you have your collection sitting in digital format on your disk, Amarok will catalogue and present the info quite well. But if you're after a database application to store the info about your music, but not the music itself, things don't look too good. It is really strange but the world of Unix/Linux seems remarkably deficient in simple, self-contained database-type of applications. I've seen many anguished users crying out, "I just want something like Filemaker!!!" - well, hard as it is to believe, there really isn't anything comparable to Filemaker. Unix has some really powerful database programs like MySQL or PostgreSQL so developers simply write front-ends for them. Hey, it works for their needs! Nadyne, MacOS X has something called "Delicious Library" - I think it is shareware, but it might be what you need. Looks pretty spiffy... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 2004 22:26:29 -0800 From: Michael Bowman Subject: Re: Mac CD collection management software, was: Linux CD Collection Management Software? It catalogs books, CDs, DVDs, and games. It uses the iSight, digital camcorders, or barcode scanners to read the barcode and search Amazon (.com. .uk, .de, .jp) for details. It syncs your database with your iPod as well. It's a gorgeous program, but missing a few features. It's a commercial app and costs $30. There are other programs out there, but I haven't used them. I'd check on http://www.versiontracker.com/ to find them. Michael ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #358 ***************************
