It's one of the good ones - the kind of album that intrigues you on first listen, then slowly and inexorably draws you in the more you listen to it. Her voice reminds me of Carla Werner's in a way, but there's a bit more edge to the way Sarah approaches her songs. The album was mainly recorded in the US with Wally Gagel, but much of the original tracking was done in her home studio and left as it was right up to the final mix. Her web site has samples of every track on the album, as well as the full video clip for the first single (with mono audio!) and I'd also highly recommend her earlier six-song EP "Prelusive", a home-recorded and largely electronically-based set of very different material. She changed songwriting/production collaborators between the EP and the album, and the difference between the two is fascinating. > And if you like her solo album you might be interested in this "where > it all begun" type of thing - before she went solo, Sarah was in a > band I really liked at the time, called Acquiesce. I've never been able to find one of these myself - and ironically, at the time it came out, I was editing a music mag here in Melbourne and in charge of fielding incoming CDs; it was never sent for review. I get the feeling Sarah doesn't think much of it, though; aside from the fact that it's not listed in the discography on her web site, when I interviewed her back in April (for the "Prelusive" EP's re-release through Universal) she was very reluctant to talk about that or the other bands she'd been involved in - not even off the record. That's interesting! I didn't know she disowned them. I don't know anything about the circumstances surrounding their break-up, so maybe there was something nasty. But if she just 'doesn't think much of it', she has nothing to be ashamed about. Yes, they were different in style and I know her solo stuff is more edgy, more interesting and more accomplished both in writing and execution. I can see all that - but to be perfectly honest, I'd still rather listen to Acquiesce. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Dec 2004 18:42:49 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: The Reputation in the U.K. Posted by Elizabeth Elmore to The Reputation's discussion list: >First of all, do you guys all know we're going to the UK for 8 shows?!?!?! >It's weird b/c I meant to mention it earlier, at least to all of you, but we >were back and forth for a while on the whole thing, and then once it >confirmed, I just sorta forgot to tell everyone.
