Thanks for video...i have loved listening to her sing that song, one of my favorites of Leonard Cohen too, it is nice to hear AND see.... Indeed, she will! We're over-due for a trip down the west coast. Where are you located? (L.A.?) I have good friends and colleagues in NoCal and SoCal, and have aimed to get together with folks for the past couple of years. In 2003, I was working on setting up dates - looking at recommended venues such as the Hotel Cafe and Largo in L.A., Java Joe's in San Diego (many happy memories in that place), and, in the North, the home of the impresarial eminence Paul Schreiber. However, that was the year that Allison was being courted by U.S. record labels, and, while it proved to be an invaluable time for getting wisdom, it was not a period in which much physical activity occurred. Touring for that whole year was, essentially, shelved. Once Allison rejected the record co. promises and returned to Canada from New York in the Fall of 2003 she formed her own record label, and through 2004 created two albums. She toured eastern Canada with a couple of U.S. dates (Ann Arbor and NYC). Now everything is back on her own track, 2005 promises to be a big year for touring. Early in the New Year, I'll be working on more Canada and U.S. dates, and her first European concert tour (slated for November 2005). We'd love to visit California. It's been years since Alley played for Pearl Jam fans in Seattle, and, the time is nigh for tripping further down the coast ( : FYI, I've just posted a movie file of Allison performing "Hallelujah" live on her Music page @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music.html Happy holidays, indeed ~ Adrian - ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Dec 2004 17:05:01 +0200 From: Markku Kolkka Subject: Re: Who Wants to Live Forever neal copperman kirjoitti viestissddn (ldhetysaika keskiviikko, 22. joulukuuta 2004 06:43): > This doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Lots of stuff to check out on the list, and I thought I'd mention a few that haven't been discussed much, if at all, on ecto. Gotan Project - Inspiracion/Espiracion. This is a remix album from a group that combines electronica, beats, and tango. I only just got it the other day and haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but it sounded good in the store. At least one track is mixed with rap and another with Chet Baker. http://www.gotanproject.com/ Mercan Dede - Sufi Traveler. I saw this group at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, and they got standing ovations at every performance. A mesmerizing combination of sufi music and electronica - and they had whirling dervishes with them. Highly highly recommended if they perform anywhere near you. Sufi Traveler is actually a release of their first 2 albums (for the price of 1). http://www.mercandede.com/ Warsaw Village Band - People's Spring. Saw them also at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Very energetic and captivating group. Eastern European music (though for some reason I thought they sounded Middle Eastern). http://wvb.terra.pl/english/ Also, saw that Maura OConnell (formerly with De Danaan) released a new album, Don't I Know. Sounded great in the store and is on my To Buy list. Her 1995 album Stories is just about a must-have for folk fans. Really beautiful. She has a rich voice and wonderful interpretations of others' songs. Probably only recommended for (contemporary) folk fans, but highly highly recommended. http://www.mauraoconnell.com/ JoAnn np: Putumayo Presents: South Pacific Islands >From: Valerie Richardson >To: ecto@smoe.org >Subject: New Sounds 2004 listener's poll >Date: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 10:04:55 -0500 > >Many of you are probably familiar with the New Sounds show, hosted >by John Schafer and broadcast nightly on WNYC in New York. I bought mine from a used music store in the US last September. It's worth tracking down. There's a review of "Innocence is Not a Crime" on Musical Discoveries, www.musicaldiscoveries.com/reviews/brboden.htm. I have to echo that review: "Innocence is Not a Crime" is thoroughly wonderful and innovative CD. Most of the tracks on the CD have earned my own, personal coveted 4-star and 5-star rating in iTunes. You know that a CD is a good one when you don't feel any need to replace it on the player even after days and days. Although I'm particularly fond of Boden's interpretation of "Who Wants to Live Forever," which would make Freddie Mercury proud, all of the songs on this CD are terrific. How many CDs appeal to people who like rock or hip hop or traditional Celtic or ethereal or folk music? How many CDs remind you both of the best of Queen and Enya? Boden combines these genres in a magical way. Take "Love is the Journey" for example: There's a underlying hip hop/electronic rhythm to the song, but the lyrics themselves, in this song about love lost and searching for new love, have their roots in traditional Celtic music. Same for "I Am the Wind" -- the beat is a mix of hip hop, pop and Celtic, but the words are very much out of something you might hear in an ages old Celtic song: "I can make a snow flurry/I can throw it all around/I can move an ice formation/I can start it melting down." It's not just the music and the lyrics that make "Innocence is Not a Crime" such a terrific CD -- Boden has an absolutely magnificent voice. It's lush and rich. If I had to decide between Brigid Boden or Sarah Brightman's rendition of "Who Wants to Live Forever" Boden's voice would be the winner. Great stuff. - --Bill n.p. I love Brigid Boden's debut album and had long hoped she would record another one. I never even heard of this album, and can only find faint hints of its existence on the net. In fact, the allmusic guide has a long interesting entry on her, lamenting that she never recorded a second album. This doesn't seem to be available anywhere. The only place I could find that appears to have it is a site in Finland, and I can't make any sense of how to order from it. Anyone have any suggestions on where to pick it up from? One of these years I'm really going to have to get myself some Queen albums. (The problem is, whenever I think that, and go see what's there, I end up looking at the "greatest hits", and then rediscover that it's three (double-?)cds, and decide I'm not that rich and/or desperate to give money to the RIAA.) Which is but to say, I've never heard this song. Searching my music collection, however, I saw "Who wants to live forever" by... wait for it... "E-rotic". One of those mid-90s mellow dance/house whatever bands that I as teenager liked, back before I discovered real music. (Ah, good times, those. :) (I'm also dating myself here as one of the youngest people on the list, which is scary.)) Discounting the stirring violins, background chorus and one and a half minutes of mindless rhythm right in the middle, I think it might actually be said to be a pretty okay song. The woman singing it has a very ...hmm ...husky voice. It doesn't immediately cry out as beautiful, but it's definitely not all bad. (If you'd like a listen and want me to email you the mp3, let me know.) :P Sander, who now intends to go hide in shame for admitting to his teenage folly. :) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #351 ***************************
