Hi Well, I know I shouldn't say this but, Kate's last couple of albums (Sensual World/Red Shoes) kinda disappointed me - (Dreaming and Hounds are my favs) so I assumed that she was sort of 'out of steam'. I would love to hear a new KB album but, to be honest, I'm not expecting to love it. So I've sort of said 'Thanks Kate' for all your great work - and started to look elsewhere. (This was years ago...) And thats been the problem. There passed a long time where I just could not find anyone to 'take Kate's place'. And only fairly recently did I discover Happy - and thats been great, but isn't the problem that we have so few real unique genius female (or male for that matter) singer/songwriters who can create a world as fascinating/fresh/challenging as Kate did. I suppose Tori and Happy come closest (for me) and I am a huge fan of both but I wish I could find some new young talent with the possibility! And altho I really like many of the new females (Sarah Slean) many of them don't seem to be breaking any new ground (my opinion). I miss Kate's anger and her extremes - from gentle seductress to wailing banshee... (Anyone have any suggestions?) There is Amanda Ghost and Imogen Heap - both fab. But I am kind of waiting to see if either 'blossoms' into the power that Kate had. (Tall order - who needs that kind of pressure?) Maybe, even better I should stop with the Kate comparisons and just enjoy the music... cheers! Michael. (PS Amanda Ghost is working with Rupert Hine - should be interesting) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 07:06:37 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: (Not) Waiting for Kate Bush Michael Hewett-Hicks wrote: >And altho I really like many of the new females (Sarah Slean) many >of them don't seem to be breaking any new ground (my opinion). Bjork is the only one who can do the highly individual, new-ground-breaking extremes of seduction and fury. Veda Hille breaks new ground on the artistic edge, though with a different kind of tenderness and passion. Of younger than that: Carina Round is definitely interesting. Kristeen Young mostly focuses on the power rather than the seduction but she's pushing boundaries. Regina Spektor is highly individual, her songwriting chops are remarkable and unique. I have hopes of Kym Brown having a chance to be more productive. lamb is consistently excellent and change with each album. Emily Bezar's sound doesn't have quite the same kind of extremes, but has creative edge. Kaitlyn ni donovon's output isn't much but she's amazing. Iva Bittova may be too close the edge for many, but wow. Australians Kerri Simpson and Margot Smith seem to have disappeared but their back catalogues are stunning. Ingrid Karklins broke my heart by deciding to give up her music for poetry. That's who comes to mind. I'm sure I've missed someone important. - --Neile - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham .... neile@sff.net/@drizzle.com ... www.sff.net/people/neile Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal ........ www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ........... www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ................ www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 10:27:40 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: (Not) Waiting for Kate Bush Hi, >>(Anyone have any suggestions?) Well, Neile already listed pretty much everyone I was going to ... :) I'll just enthusiastically second the listings of Bjork, Veda Hille, and Kristeen Young, and add that I've been saying for years that Emily Bezar has been putting out the records KaTe should have been releasing all this time. I would also add to the list of "young-uns" that Molly Zenobia's music goes for the sweeping cinematic extremes of some of Kate's stuff, and she's certainly got the vocal chops to pull it off. I think she's got some room to mature in her writing, but she's worth checking out. >Ingrid Karklins broke my heart by deciding to give up her music for poetry. Which reminds me, I keep forgetting this: THANK YOU to Cliff Furnald (who I believe is still lurking out there) for your segment a couple weeks ago on WPKN! (He played a recording of Ingrid reading her poetry in Austin, then played a few of her musical pieces.) I had missed his announcement of this here, and just happened to be driving around listening to the radio when I heard a very familiar voice I hadn't heard in a long time. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 09:38:17 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: (Not) Waiting for Kate Bush meth wrote: > I've been saying for years that Emily Bezar has been putting out the has > been putting out the records KaTe should have been releasing all this > time. records KaTe should have been releasing all this time. Also interesting though at this point a little repetitive from song to song is Julia Rose, whom I discovered browing at cdbaby.com. I forgot to mention Kat Terran, who also has a somewhat less expansive territory, but what she does she does quirkily and well. I like her solo work. Am less certain about her current group project (samples linked to her www.katterran.com site) Chloe Day also interests me a lot. Inventive. (another cdbaby) Inner is very interesting though another of limited range, though fascinating within that. (cdbaby) Oh, and I can't forget Under Byen, which is one of my favourite discoveries from last year. Somewhat Bjork-like, though dreamier territory. (hard to find -- they're Danish) Last night I was listening to Kathleen Yearwood's _Book of Hate_, which is so brilliant it pains me. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net .... http://www.sff.net/people/neile Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music . http://www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ...... http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 09:52:26 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Kristeen Young news For those interested. Jeff and I will be playing at Pianos (158 Ludlow in NYC) on Thursday, December 23 at 10pm. This means we won't be playing a X-mas show in St. Louis. I know the St. Louis X-mas show is sort of a tradition....but that's what makes it so fun to break. We needed a change of routine. Future Flash.....We will be playing a month of shows in London in March (possibly Feb.)...exciting, exciting. and...Flashback....Read the Rolling Stone Germany (December 2004 issue) review of Breasticles at www.kristeenyoung.com Have a hollyjolly time, KY ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Dec 2004 01:18:48 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Sons & Daughters Anyone know much about The Sons and Daughters. I followed links to them and was really impressed with their samples. Skip the 50 second sound clips and go straight to the videso for two full songs. They are from Scotland and their accents shine through even when singing. A little of the X male/female interplay, but a very different sound. It doesn't strike me as wildly unique, but it has an energy to it that is really exciting anyway. http://www.sonsanddaughtersloveyou.co.uk/ neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #346 ***************************
