I missed Cropredy this year (which is happening again this summer -- it's not dead yet), so the last time I saw Fairport was the winter 2004 tour. And the next time will be the winter 2005 tour. What do you want to know? The big news last year was Dave and Christine Pegg's divorce, which led to speculation (even on the band's part) that Cropredy would end since she's been the one in charge of that event for years. The new album's not bad; they're still rolling along. They are still a lot of fun live, but Mundy Turner is not my favourite opening act (they opened for them last winter). As for the Strawbs, I'd have to get my husband on this list. The last time he saw them was at a Cropredy years ago. Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. I am really not looking forward to the future of PBS pledge drives, because eventually they will have a wrinkly Britney Spears, balding boy bands, and really old rappers. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 2004 14:41:52 -0500 From: "foghornj" Subject: RE: Fairport & Strawbs I saw the Strawbs on their reunion tour about a year ago. That was the first I'd heard they reformed, at least as an acoustic trio. I'd been a fan in college circa the Hero and Heroine album. Regrettably I never got the chance to see them back in the day. I guess going in we were expecting a nice show, a mellow and nostalgic review of the more acoustic side of Strawbs that we liked from the 70's. What we got was a great show, with tracks from all aspects of their career, even most of Hero and Heroione, wonderfully rearranged for 3 acoustic guitars. I knew something wonderful was happening when they began the full Autumn suite. I fully expected Dave Cousins to manifest the same sort of vocal deterioration that I'd come to hear from the likes of other male rock singers of the day, viz Ian Anderson, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey to name a few. I was truly amazed at the range of emotion that remains in Cousins' voice. One part that particularly sticks with me began with Dave telling a story about enjoying a pint in the local pub one day when his son runs in and tells them to turn on the TV. This was September 11th, 2001. He then explained how their next song could well have been about those events, but that it was written many many years beforehand. It was the title track to the Grave New World album. If you have a copy, listen to it again with that in mind. Chilling. I'm not as familiar with their early material as with the 70's stuff but I recall Cousins mentioning the Sandy Denny days, and they probably played one of the older tunes, however I can't remember what it is or whether it would have been one you are interested in. Guess I'm getting old too :) He was very chatty and entertaining throughout, and they were all available to chat up and get discs autographed after the show. They were in my area twice in 2004, once with the full reconsititued band, and once again acoustic. Unfortunately I've become reticent about traveling to see shows alone these days, and since there was no one around who I could share it with I didn't go. I regret that. I hope they keep it up and I look forward to seeing them again. I highly recommend seeing them. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 2004 20:22:01 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Fwd: Elysian Fields last NY appearance 'til April For those NYC area ectos who might be interested.... >From: Ashersand@aol.com >Date: Thu, 9 Dec 2004 23:36:43 EST >Subject: Elysian Fields last NY appearance 'til April >To: Ashersand@aol.com > >Elysian Fields >Friday, December 17th, 10 pm >at NORTHSIX 66 No 6th St, >Williamsburg, Brooklyn >tel 599-5103 >http://www.northsix.com/main.htm > >tix $10 in advance, $12 at the door ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #342 ***************************
