(After all, here in Korea the stores play music in English that is really, really offensive and they just don't realize it until they see one of us foreigners reacting to it.) So I checked the group's website and the only thing I could find is in one song there is a reference to 'my god' and 'Christ' neither of which appeared to me to be disrespectful. Did I miss the bad song? And how bad was it? Pat nr. According to a different story I read, there was a few "f-bombs" in one of the songs. Allegedly there were no parental advisory labels attached to the CD. Wal-Mart is *the* biggest music retailer out there right now, and they've been positioning themselves as "family friendly" while still trying to carry the most popular music. I figured this would happen sooner or later. - -- Scott Andrew Lo-fi acoustic pop superhero! http://www.scottandrew.com My new record "Where I've Been" is available at CD Baby, iTunes, FolkWeb and more! http://www.scottandrew.com/music ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Dec 2004 22:15:22 +0000 From: Adam K Subject: judee still story The Observer, a UK sunday newspaper, has an accompanying music magazine section that accompanies it once a month. Entitled OMM, it is generally (yep, IMHO, folks) an annoying waste of space, typical of its age, staffed with goldfish with an attention span of three and half minutes for whom music has to be "fun" (or, at least, "ironic") and disposable and appeal to the masses. Last year it was besotted with Dido and the Darkness, but overlooked the death of Warren Zevon. This year they're besotted with the Scissor Sisters. However, in this week's issue, they run an interesting story on Judee Sill, a name that the ecto list introduced me to. Damned good article, too. Hopefully, this will take you there: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,13887,1369079,00.html Otherwise, you'll have to go to the Observer site and track it down yourself. Sorry about that. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Dec 2004 14:39:08 -0800 From: Allan Anderson Subject: Re: infiltration of ecto goodness -- recommendations? Thanks again for all the suggestions, folks. It's a lot of fun to check out all these new-to-me artists from a starting point. I do like the Ani-related folks (that I've been able to track down), and Carina Round has been a bit of a revelation as well. I'm still trying to wrap my head around Thea, for some reason. Anyhow, thanks again. Being an ecto-philiac is a full-time job! n.p. I know the bands mostly for the legacies, particularly in conjunction with Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny. What are they like now? Live experiences are particularly welcome :) neal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 2004 03:32:34 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Tree Wave Hola, I've mentioned Tree Wave before and I'll do it again. This is a duo of a computer musician and a singer who do very nice technoish music. The gimmick (everyone has a gimmick, don't they?) is the music is composed on a C-64. Here is an article to read: http://music.dallasobserver.com/issues/2004-12-09/music/music.html You can download four of their songs at this site: http://www.observatoryonline.org/releases/view_release.php?sku=os034 If I ever make it to Dallas I would like to get their EP (sold at a particular record store). I've been suffering a slight case of Aging Pathetic Rock Stars passed on to me by the local public tv station (pledge drive strain). Now they've corralled the aging disco stars. Must KC dance around the stage Britney-style with headset and microphone to keep my attention? I would watch gape-mouthed if he just stood at his keyboard and sang "That's the Way I Like It." Ah-ha, Ah-ha. Actually, the doo-wop groups and soul groups are fun to watch, if a bit plasticized by the evil touch of the series' producer. I expect I will live to see the post-grunge version in 30 years with the Hives, White Stripes, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, etc. Let's hope they all age gracefully. For some inexplicable reason I've been wading in the tidal pool of The Ventures and The Shadows the last couple of days, waiting for the last wave. Actually it is explicable; I'm trying to figure out how to integrate guitars into computer engendered music and so am going back to the guys who know how to make a melody interesting for 2 to 3 minutes without relying on vocals. I was saddened that Quay didn't have a CD to sell, but I was happy to hear they put out a 5 song EP under a new name. http://cdbaby.com/cd/jaggery The 2 minute samples don't really do them justice since most of the CD tracks are 5-7 minutes long. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #341 ***************************
