[Neile Graham ] Re: a belated, but no less heartfelt R.I.P. [Ethan Straffin ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 06:38:27 -0800 (PST) From: Craig Gidney Subject: Cloe St. Lipard Cloe St. Lipard. The lead singer of the French ethereal-goth band Collection Darnell-Andrea has an amazing voice. CDA has been in existence since the late 90s. Their style runs the gamut from pastoral neo-classical compositions and dark chamber pop to harder edged gothic rock with electronic and industrial overtones. All incarnations of the band feature a cello, composer-keyboardist Jean-Christophe Darnell, and the wonderful Ms. St. Lipard. St. Lipards voice is extreme malleable as her repertoire travels the spectrum of Darnells compositions. She can soar like an opera singer, growl like Siouxsie or gently croon. Her vibrato-rich singing has an intoxicating purr, extremely reminiscent of the most celebrated French singer of all, Edith Piaf. With this dazzlingly fragile timbre, St. Lipard telegraphs loneliness, fear, rage, and awe with a wild beautyeven though I dont know a word that she says! Darnells compositions a rich, and occasionally, appear to have themes (the album Villers aux-Vents appears to be a conception album about World War I). From what I can glean of the mostly French lyrics, hes influenced by romantic poets and the symbolist movement. Please check out their past catalogpeople who love 4AD in its heydayand people who like Siouxsie at her darkestwill both find something to like, and will get to experience one of the great ethereal voices. http://cdaa.free.fr/ Tired of spam? Hi, I just discovered that the ectoverse lost one of its own recently. Aaron Hawkins passed away on September 3. He was was a semi-lurker on ecto in the mid-90's (he signed his name Aaren then). He became a blogger of some note, being one of the first African-Americans in the blogosphere. (His sister and mother are keeping the blog going, at .) He was always an ectophile in terms of the music he listened to, and after almost a decade of sporadic e-mail correspondence I finally got to meet him in June when Rachael Sage played in Chicago. I had been expecting to see him when Rachael played Chicago again in October, and thought it odd that he wasn't at the show ... but he and I had often gone months, sometimes years between correspondence, and I was the one who owed him an email from months ago anyway, so it wasn't all that unusual. And I only just today got around to upgrading to Firefox 1.0 and joined the world of RSS feeds, which is how I reconnected with his blog and read the shocking news. Aaron was brilliant, opinionated (yes, even uppity), and had impeccable taste in music, books, comics, and television. He was also one of the funniest people I have ever had the privilege to know. (I still remember verbatim some of the messages he sent me about _Babylon 5_ back in the day - -- when I see some episodes even now things he said will pop into my head and I'll start cracking up -- and damned if that correspondence didn't disappear when that first laptop of mine gave up the ghost years ago.) Thanks, Aaron, for introducing me to The Boondocks, and for giving me yet another reason to laugh at Zathras on B5. I'm going to watch "Hush" in your honor, and later I'll put on _The Dreaming_ for you. There is an article about Aaron's passing here . Here is the obituary his family posted on his blog: ============== Aaron Hawkins, 34, was born in Chicago on January 12, 1970, to Stephen and Jessie Hawkins. During elementary school on Chicago's south side, Aaron participated in a youth program at WBEZ, Chicago's public radio affiliate, marking the beginning of his role as a media personality. He graduated, begrudgingly, from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 1988 and from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995 with a degree in linguistics. Aaron was in the Naval Reserves during college, and in late 1990, he was called to active duty and sent to Saudi Arabia for six months. Aaron faced his involuntary call to active duty with the same irreverence he faced everything else in his life: forced to serve in the food line, he wrote "Stop Big Daddy Bush's Oil War" on his hat. After college, Aaron spent several years in the computer industry, eventually starting his web log or blog uppity-negro.com. There, Aaron built a community of people who came to appreciate and rely on his insightful commentary on everything from the second War in Iraq to drag kings. Aaron left us way too soon on September 3. ============== Be at peace, Aaron. I'm sure you're over there on the other side raising hell and cracking 'em up along the way. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 20:58:50 -0800 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Re: a belated, but no less heartfelt R.I.P.
