Since The Fiery Furnaces' last release clocked in at over 70 minutes of delicious Blueberry excess, their fans haven't exactly been starving for new material. But hey! A morsel of news about a new EP, or a series of bizzare, vinyl- and concert-only releases, or even an insanely whimsical double-LP wouldn't be so bad every now and then, would it? We didn't think so either, and so we waited patiently for the right time to pounce on either Matt or Eleanor Friedberger. That right time was yesterday afternoon, when we managed to corral Matt on the phone for an exclusive interview. Let's just say we weren't quite prepared for the onslaught of nearly finished projects the band has lined up for 2005. First will be the obligatory collected-singles EP. According to Matt, most of the 10 tracks on the EP have only been released as B-sides in Britain, although "some of them are A sides, I'm afraid." The disc will lead with "Single Again", which was released as a UK single earlier this year, just after the release of Blueberry Boat, as well as "Here Comes the Summer"-- which, despite our suspicions, Friedberger insists is not an Undertones cover. The band's label, Rough Trade, has scheduled the aptly titled (and quite exceptional) collection EP for January 11th. Songs and such: 01 Single Again 02 Here Comes the Summer 03 Evergreen 04 Sing for Me 05 Tropical Ice-Land 06 Duffer St. George 07 Smelling Cigarettes 08 Cousin Chris 09 Sweet Spots 10 Sullivans Social Club Now, you may recall that earlier this year, our very own Chris Dahlen was intrepid enough to interview the Friedbergers, and discovered to his uncertain delight that the siblings' grandmother would make substantial contributions to their next full-length. Well, they're now nearly finished recording it: The backing tracks are completed, and the band stopped by Chicago's Soma Studios yesterday-- with grandmother Olga Sarantos in tow-- to lay down the vocals. Which should be something of an undertaking considering the album's projected 60-minute runtime, and the revelation that Sarantos will be singing in dialogue with Eleanor repeatedly throughout the record. When asked how the sound of the record might contrast with Blueberry Boat, Matt was understandably vague, stating, "I don't know what to say about it. There's a lot of talking. It's sorta middle-eastern-like. I shouldn't try and give a description. There's a lot of narration on it." It's tentatively titled Garfield El, after the Green Line stop near which Sarantos presumably resides. Additionally, the band has plans to record another full-length as soon as they've completed work on this so-called "grandmother record." That is to say, in January. A completely separate work from Garfield El, Matt describes this one-- very tentatively titled Speak Chinese by Singing-- as "a record of songs. A lot of the songs and lyrics will be from Eleanor's and our collection of junior high and high school notes, like notes to your friends. So there will be some long verses because of that rattling on and on about God knows what, and all the beautiful, really pretty abbreviations people would write-- like 'write back soon,' or that kind of stuff. Little note language that I'm really excited about." So, how will these albums be released then? Well, Matt says there's a chance the two releases may wind up packaged together, depending on what Rough Trade finds most agreeable. "I don't think [the label] will want to put out the 'grandmother' one when they hear it, so the idea is you just [release] them together, and people will just ignore the 'grandmother' record. Some people use CDs as mirrors, or hang them from the ceiling fan and they shine and look cool, so they could use it for that." The band is aiming for the double-CD release to come out no later than "the middle of July," although a spokesperson for Rough Trade told us the label is shooting for May. As for a tracklist, Friedberger informed us that the former disc will most likely contain the following songs, plus a few more that are currently untitled: Garfield El The Wayward Granddaughter The School of Fancy Cookery by Antoinette Pope $5,000 a Day Guns Under the Counter Dr. Peter Pane and His Doughnut Factory Seven Silver Curses Funeral at My Wedding, Wedding at His Funeral Slaving Away Bishop Nickoliky Shady Grave As for any possible upcoming singles, Friedberger is somewhat skeptical about Rough Trade allowing them to release another non-album A-side like "Single Again". "We got to do the singles because they didn't like any of the songs on Blueberry Boat, so they let us record those. So if they like songs on the next record or records it will be harder for us to do that." But Friedberger did mention the band starting up their "own little vinyl printing business." After clarifying that these mini-projects would be sold at their shows only, Friedberger elaborated on what they had in mind: "It would be 30-minute or 15-minute songs about Tom DeLay and his son, and 15-minute songs about the Senate Majority Leader [Bill Frist]. They would be very factual and realistic. They're such different characters, those two. The fancy surgeon and the exterminator, DeLay. His son is a big developer north of Dallas." He further explained-- sort of-- that "it's an interesting contrast, and those are the people that run the country. I mean, other people run the country or world that aren't in elected government but as far as people who are in elected positions of power, they're an interesting contrast so you can have a little thing about that." You certainly can. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Dec 2004 15:10:43 +1100 From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: New folk calendar Hey folks, Suzanne Vega's in this, along with a bunch of other folkies... http://www.nakedfolkcalendar.com Cheers, sherlyn - -- Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@pixelopolis.com - Sydney, Australia ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #331 ***************************
