Subject: Re: Temporal Shibboleths My "epiphany" was David Bowie when I was 12. I wanted to buy some of his music after seeing Labyrinth (1986). I realized I liked his older stuff better than what he was doing in the 80s. It was the first time I'd actually wanted to own anybody's music. My dad was a good sport about it too because I always played my David Bowie tapes in his car wherever we went. Before that I would just listen to the radio but nothing stood out like that. After David Bowie, chronologically my next biggest influences were Erasure and then Kate Bush (thanks to VH1 in 1990 playing videos from the Sensual World). Thank goodness for the internet. Later. Before I discovered her at the age of 16, I generally listened to crap (though the crap was getting better, at least I'd evolved from straight top-40 to "alternative" college radio :}). Kate Bush was the artist who taught me that music can be another form of great literature, and that headphones can be their own reward. Her music also led me to my life as I know it, but that's another story entirely ... :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Nov 2004 13:05:54 -0500 From: gordodo@optonline.net Subject: US East Coast Paul the Girl shows Just so the east coasters have something in their neighborhoods since two loons arent coming this way, Paul the Girl is journeying over to NYC from England next week - -jason _______________________________________ Evenin' all, Soz for blanket email but if anyone can forward this to relevant parties they may know (new Yorkers) it would be handy and very helpful! THey were shocked Americans didn't know Kate Bush...so after that it was Kate Bush and more Kate Bush, and Depech Mode when I was dark and gothy...Then I graduated to Laurie Anderson, moved to LA, sang in pop bands and started to write music with a former Harry Partch ensemble player...even got talked into some "disco" dance stuff by a nice gay producer that wanted me to be the next Kylie...while not with him I was listening to Eno...ALWAYS BEEN A MIXED GENRE GIRL...then I found world music, got lost in other worlds, I was so sick of Rock N' Roll by then, especially western drum kits and long boring electric guitar solos...(thinking, well, they been doing the same shit since the 60s!!!) Once I found hand drums, I was hooked...and even though my first band was Punk (energy, raw emotion, drive) then everything was world beat bands, I still had that Kate Bushness in me...I think I started mixing them together about the same time she did, world and ecto, weirdly enough. But I felt pretenious calling my projects world when it was all a bunch of white guys and me...I also loved electronica, but it felt either formless (Eno stuff) or disco-ish. Loved world but felt disconnected when it wasn't in english, something you can hold onto, real words and feelings. I am still trying to take the Eno-Laurie electronica wizard feels and add them to the purity of voice of folk, using the song structures of pop, and the exotic qualities of world and mix it all together...I now see all the elements in my current music from the beginning of my childhood... I want the hard bass-driven drive of rock (jimi, janis) on top of dreamy electronica (laurie, eno, robert rich) with the dreamy to screamy passionate yet odd Kate-ish vocals, with touches of world in the tribal didg and percussion and feels...and hopefully the occasional beauty of classical... thanks for such a good question...influences and the times they came from.. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 00:02:28 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: Temporal Shibboleths meredith said: > I'm in the "early 30s" age grouping, and for me it was *definitely* KaTe. I'm in the late 30's group, or, more precisely, the really damn close to 40 group :) Kate was definitely a turning point for me too. I'm trying to remember where the music stuff really kicked in. My folks always listening to music. They were mostly folky types, with some interest in world music. So that's what I always listened to as a kid. I remember seeing folks like Harry Belefante and Cash/Carter and Pat Boone families. Somewhere in late elementary school/junior high, I started listening to "my own music". That is, whatever was on the top 40. Really poppy stuff. Stuff with an edge was pretty foreign to me. By high school, I'd managed to make the transition to a mix of classic rock and new top 40/rock. Squarely in the mainstream of high school tastes. I had tapes by the likes of AC/DC, Loverboy, and Foreigner. And I was discovering the "roots" of that kind of sound, getting into Zeppelin and Queen. (I was living in Utah, an hour north of Salt Lake City, at the time.) I was even given tapes, notably New Order's "Power, Corruption and Lies" and some Talking Heads that I didn't get at all. (I guess we are around 82/83 here.) The tail end of college, I started hering some new wave stuff, and it seemed more interesting then the rock/pop. I think Thomas Dolby's ep "She Blinded Me With Science" was probably the turning point for me. I was probably attracted to the quirky title track, which got airplay and lept of the radio as really different. But the other song on side A is the mindboggling "One of our Submarines" and "Windpower" kicks off side two. That was music like I hadn't heard anywhere. It wasn't just catchy or heavy, but it had so many layers and was so unique. I guess that was probably my epiphany album. I went to college the next year in Salt Lake. There were a bunch of other kids from California there, and they introduced me to so much amazing music. Stuff I had no idea even existed when I was in high school. Somehow, no one listened to punk and early new wave there, but it was all over college. Within the year, I was given a tape with Kate's "The Dreaming" on one side and The Cocteau Twins "Treasure", which, combined with seeing my second concert without my parrents (U2, with the Alarm opening) pushed me in two parallel, sort of complimentary paths. I filled my collection with the likes of Kate, Cocteau's, Jane Siberry, Laurie Anderson and other similar stuff. As well as everything that followed the U2, R.E.M., Talking Heads, New Order, Oingo Boingo path. (Yeah, I came back to enjoy those bands after all.) Fun idea Kerry. I hope other people chime in. neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #319 ***************************
