I've had sporadic encounters with Anne and her music, and have always been interested, but I this is the first studio release I have. It's on the short side, but a great mix of songs that leaves me wanting more. Touching, catchy, funny, snarky. And the live song with banter is a hoot. I'm sure some east coast ectophiles are a lot more familiar with Anne and can provide more intelligible endorsements. Any takers? neal np: Wind Horses - Tammerlin (Lee Hunger & Arvid Smith) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 23:40:23 -0800 From: Irvin Lin Subject: BLUE NILE info As far as I know, there are only four BLUE NILE albums released. A WALK ACROSS THE ROOFTOPS, HATS, PEACE AT LAST, and their latest HIGH. I know of no release called ADVENTURES ALONG/ON THE BLUE NILE. Of course, I am not a HUGE fan, I really only have HATS (a great album) so I might be wrong about that, but the "unofficial" BLUE NILE discography (though outdated, it has nothing since 2000) doesn't have a listing by that name either. http://www.psiron.demon.co.uk/discography_blue_nile.htm Irvin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Nov 2004 03:00:03 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ********************* Jeff Pearce (no Email address) ********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jeff Pearce November 16 Orpheus Naama Avramzon Mon November 18 1974 Scorpio Jeff Smith Mon November 19 1962 Crash Kevin Bartlett Fri November 21 1952 Scorpio with Saturn and Pluto issues Claudia Spix Wed November 23 1960 Schuetze Anja Baldo Tue November 23 1965 Garbanzo Tommy Persson Wed November 25 1964 Sagittarius Pat Tessitore November 26 Sagittarius Valerie Kraemer November 26 Sagittarius Justin Bur Fri November 27 1964 Sagittarius Sue Trowbridge Sun November 27 1966 Skytten Ward Kadel Tue November 29 1977 Sagittarius Jesse Hernandez Liwag Wed November 29 1972 Water Rat Mirko Bulaja Sat November 30 1974 Block Juha Sorva Thu December 02 1976 Sagittarius Chip Lueck Thu December 05 1968 Sagittarius Lenore December 05 sagi Michele Wellck December 08 Sagittarius Jeremy J. The leaps and bounds her songwriting took between _Black Notebook_ and this one are truly stunning. And I *love* the production. It's absolutely perfect for where the songs are at. Not sure if that's any more intelligble, but there ya go. :) I just confirmed Anne for a return engagement in our living room (on January 23), and I'm really looking forward to it!! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 14:48:57 -0500 From: aural gratification Subject: Artist perspective Hey First of all I was quite suprised to see myself as an example of anything in any discussion, but the compliment was nicely received. Thank you. I just wanted to say from my perspective that a House Concert is seen as an opportunity for contact and intamacy, sometimes barriered at other venues. I look forward to them as very personal and engaging scenarios with people who care enough to attend. These are the times when we touch without pretense or showmanship or invisible walls. There's no hiding behind production and there's an incredible amount of trust and sharing in such a close setting. It's humbling and full of more thanks than you could imagine. I actually prefer to not have omnipotent control over all the sonic considerations, but rather try and just bask in the nakedness and masklessness that's being afforded me. Bless the people who open their homes and hearts to the things we all share and love. If any of you are or can be in the Minneapolis area on the 19th and wish to join us, let me know. We still have some seats left (though not many). I have *Give In* and I love it. I also have heard some songs from *Black Notebook* (I am addicted to "Bellyside") and they're great too. *Give in* is much more produced (that's not a bad thing in this case) and the songs are fantastic. The banter is great too, which is why I am so excited to see her live....in my home...I'm giddy!! ~Amy Lotsberg Producer, Collected Sounds www.collectedsounds.com http://collectedsounds.com/presents/anneheaton.html - -------Original Message------- > From: "meredith" > Subject: Re: Anne Heaton - Give In > Sent: 16 Nov 2004 08:07:12 > > Hi, > > Neal posted: > > >I recently got a copy of Anne Heaton's latest CD, Give In, and have > >thoroughly been enjoying it. I think it's important to remember that there are actually multiple scenes, and that they can differ a lot by location. My experiences in Albuquerque are probably a lot different then Doug's in Boston. That is probably true. A lot of solo and duo performers will also be touring with the sound equipment that they need. We have also presented performers who couldn't sing without a PA, and I wouldn't avoid hearing/presenting a great musician just because they don't project well! >and continuum was prolly a bad word. it's really multiple axes: >equipment, longevity of the venue/experience of the promoter, >capacity, and proximity to pro venues are among the things bookers >are going to weigh. That's probably true. My experience is that a booking agent has typically already made up their mind where they stand on house concerts. Either it is something they are open to or not. All of the above comes into play with an agent who is open, but it doesn't matter how you run your shows for agents who aren't interested. >.. and while i know that ectophiles are talking almost >exclusively about acoustic music (and that community is probably >larger than the punk house show network), It's easy to forget that the punk rock house concert circuit is probably as big and established as the folk/acoustic one. They hardly overlap at all. They have a lot of similarities, but they have some unique and different issues too. >the thing is, you may be >writing to an agent who just read a similar article about hardcore >house shows, and thinks that's the mainstream. While that's possible, it really depends on the type of artists you are contacting. Folk/acoustic artists and their agents are very familiar with hosue concerts. Americana and rock and roll types less so. >if >you're writing to someone who is feeling antsy about the gig, >you're better off if you can say something like 'we've been >running shows at this location approximately once every two months >for the last three years' and provide some assurance (without >saying so in so many words) that there's no chance the artist is >going to be hauled off to jail. I always provide a lot of details to the people I contact. The initial contact is a brief paragraph, saying all of the above and more. If they are interested, I provide a multi-page FAQ that outlines all aspects of the shows, what we can provide (lodging, no sound,...) and a list of all our previous shows. I won't post that here, but I'm happy to share with any of you budding house concert hosts out there :) > > >some (by no means all, but some) professional venues regard house > > >shows very differently and with much more enmity. > > > > I haven't heard of this happening much in my area, but I'm fortunate in > > that I know the folks who run the local "competing" venues, and I happen to > > run one of the series that could be considered competition as well. :) I > > can check in with the Acoustic Cafe and The Space and St. John's > > Coffeehouse to see what they've got coming up and make sure there are no > > conflicts. We are pretty good around here too. There is really only one venue that is close to what we are doing. And they only do a half dozen shows a year that might cross back and forth. We actually send artists to each other if we think it will help out. We've also built some good relationships with bigger events. The Botanic Gardens does weekly concerts in the summer. They were very leary about us doing a house concert with one of their performers, but came to see it was an entirely different event. They now contact us several times a year, because the extra $500 a house concert could provide will sometimes sway the contract they are negotiating. > > >some pro venues see house >> >shows (wrongly, in my opinion) as the province of amateurs, and >> >will be less likely to book someone who played a house show last >> >time through. >> >> That's just stupid, and I really hope that doesn't happen too often. I can understand the resentment from a venue, but it is pretty silly not to judge an artist by their talent. We've hosted artists who have headlined the Birchmere, The Barns at Wolftrap and folk clubs all over the country. Of course, our local venues don't have that perception either. We just don't have any :) > > Not too many house concert presenters are in that position, but if they >> are, more power to 'em. I actually don't think there is an issue with a guarantee. We don't do it, but I think it is justifiable in the context. If you were having a kids party and you hired a clown, you would pay them a fixed rate. You couldn't sell tickets to come see the clown, but you could still have all the people donate to cover the cost. It's all the same thing. neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #316 ***************************
