Yeah, I've noticed a fair number of Aussies chiming in on the subject of Howard's reelection over on www.sorryeverybody.com (which I must say is fairly brilliant). I got to experience both the Australian election and the US election in person. I was in Australia for the last three weeks of their election, and got to watch my boyfriend vote. I was surprised to see the differences between the two elections, even aside from the obvious differences (no given date for an election, preferential voting). Based only on what I heard at the polling place that I was at (Sydney's city hall), one of the deciding factors in Mr Howard's favour was the impromptu meeting between Mr Lathan and Mr Howard the previous day, where Mr Latham manhandled Mr Howard in the guise of a handshake. Had that happened in the States, the press would have been all over it, screaming about the behaviour of the candidate. (Actually, Mr Bush's Secret Service agents probably would've had Mr Kerry on the ground anyway.) /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 14:06:02 -0500 From: Gary Davis Subject: Re: bush bashing At 01:55 AM 11/10/04 -0500, anna maria wrote: > >Hi.. >Bill asked for songs against Bush.. >Steve Earle's The Revoltion starts now a and the new >Dan Bern cd might work. Had > that happened in the States, the press would have been all over it Well, the press *was* all over it, and frankly, I think it was just a stupid story blown out of all proportion. Latham is physically larger than the trollish Howard; he happened to move up close... so what of it? I don't think it had that much influence on the outcome of the election, but maybe I once again over-estimate the intelligence of my fellow folk. I didn't pay any attention, but then again I did my best to ignore the entire pre-election frenzy. I form my opinions and make my choices on the basis of the whole period between elections so I already knew perfectly well how I was going to vote, and it wasn't for either of these clowns anyway. Now for some music news from down under: - - The Waifs released a double live CD, "A brief history"... I haven't kept up with the Waifs in the last couple of years, but live shows used to be what they did best, so it should be a solid, fun record. - - Love Outside of Andromeda (self-titled) is currently my favourite local release... Quite crunchy, yet with a pop sensibility - I love to turn it up! - - interesting new discovery: New Buffalo - The Last Beautiful Day. "New Buffalo" is actually just one person, Sally Seltmann. But she managed to get some interesting people to collaborate with her on this CD, including Beth Orton, and Jim White from The Dirty Three... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 23:00:27 -0500 From: "dave" Subject: Re: post election songs I'm thinking some Toby Keith. Maybe some Jaci Velasquez. For Springsteen, R.E.M., John Fogerty, P. Diddy, Michael Moore, and the rest, I'd go with one Mary Arden Collins did called Powerless. I suppose for that crimson tide blanketing the country (have any of you looked at a red/blue map done by county instead of state? gives new meaning to the term 'fringe element') you could go with the Alabama fight song. For Robert Redford, Danny Boy. And looking forward to '08, Supertramp did a song called Rudy. and of course, the ultimate post election song - O Canada. Pack a sweater, get's cold up there... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 20:41:08 -0800 From: "Jack Sutton" Subject: RE: post election songs For a more subtle approach there is a CD titled "Lullabies from the Axis of Evil" released by kirelig kultruverksted a record label from Norway. It's a collection of lullabies sung by women from Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, Cuba, and Palestine for the most part recorded live in the homes of these women and then mixed with some western artist such as Nini Hagen, Eddie Reader, Eva Dahlgren, Mimi and others. A wonderful spiritual lesson in the interconnectedness of all peoples. On a more less subtle note, don't forget Laura Love's "I want you Gone".
