Definitely worth a look. http://www.feurio.com/English/index.shtml ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Oct 2004 22:12:59 -0700 From: Michael Pearce Subject: Petracovich again I'm reading the press on her site, http://www.redbuttonsrecords.com/press.htm, and I decided you needed to be reminded to pay more attention to her. (The "her" in this case is Jessica Peters, and the band name is her old family name, her grandfather from Russia, who instilled in her the love of music by forcing the family to listen to the New York Opera on radio every Saturday. Here's a couple of reviews from her site. Go there and order the record. ____ Aural Innovations (http://aural-innovations.com) Uploaded to Aural Innovations: October 2003 By Dj Minix Here are some basic things I'd like to state for the record: Wal-Mart is destroying the music industry. Music is changing. Most new hip-hop music is garbage from both a songwriting and music production standpoint. And finally, Jessica Peters from Petracovich has both the vision and musical ability to sell 5 million records. The Petracovich release is entitled, Blue Cotton Skin. What a solid job here! Ms. Peters is a new breed of independent artist; she combines convention with the unconventional and the end result is an immensely inspired and thoughtfully focused musical epiphany... and... she's only a girl! After creating a masterpiece such as this, you'd think she'd stop. Not so. She created her own label, hit the road and has garnered major-market radio airplay from Seattle to Honolulu. And, she's just getting warmed up. I'll make this as concise as possible: Blue Cotton Skin is dripping with emotion for every ambient electronic minute. Jessica's voice is absolutely refined. She displays a true talent for lyric crafting throughout the album as well. It is both lo-fi and downright breathtaking at times - a task difficult to pull off for most artists. Not only do I respect Ms. Peters for what she is doing musically, I also admire her overall drive and talent. In short, she is just breaking down the doors, and that is the truly beautiful thing about Ms. Peters and others of her ilk. High points include: Nighttime, Fall from Trees, Bird's in Flight and Rosebud Babysue (http://www.babysue.com) Petracovich - Blue Cotton Skin (CD, RedButtons, Ambient pop) Petracovich is Jessica Peters. Ms. Peters has accomplished what thousands and thousands of other artists only dream of. Based on her own determination, skill, and talent...she has written and recorded an album...and released it on her own label...and has come up with a collection of tunes superior to virtually everything being currently being released by major labels. Peters' voice is incredibly silky and smooth. Her music reminds us of Donna Lewis...except the music is not as sparse. Blue Cotton Skin is an amazingly effective collection of ambient pop music...executed to perfection. The tunes are smart, heady, relaxing, cerebral, and intensely beautiful. Highly recommended. (Rating: 6 out of 6) The Best Female Musicians (http://bestfemalemusicians.com/) Petracovich Blue Cotton Skin Rating "A" Jessica Peters creates a moody, ambient, and electronic world reminiscent of bands like Portishead. Her roots are obviously in the folk tradition, but she chooses to stray for this release and finds a unique and interesting sound guaranteed to captivate the listener. Jessica is responsible for the keyboard sounds, voices, and strings and organs, while Tad Wagner covers guitars and computers. They enlist a host of other musicians to fill in whatever spaces are left empty. I could certainly see fans of Portishead or Mazzy Star enjoying the music Petracovich creates on this CD. The songs are atmospheric and, if played loudly enough, likely to make your neighbors wonder what is going on in your place. Jessica Peters wrote all the songs which sometimes play like eerie children's stories as in the opening number, 'Nighttime.' The trippy 'Fall From Trees' reminds me of Julee Cruise's early work with David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti. 'Birds In Flight' has a nice feel and is a little more upbeat than the songs on the remainder of the release. 'Coyote and the Moon' is a beautiful piano piece and much more traditional than many other of the songs. Jessica shows us her ability to play a piece that stands by itself and says something somber and peaceful. 'Driving Home' uses acoustic guitar and is a great showcase for Jessica's soft and wonderful voice, as the beat picks up you can hear Jessica's firm roots in folk style music. Jessica manages to create a sound that is at once accessible and unique. As a listener I found myself drawn into her world. 'Company' is once again a more traditional piano driven number. The stark instrumentation allows Jessica's haunting voice to be the highlight. This is a great disc for late nights and rainy days. Julee Cruise's influence is yet again evident on this tune. The album is comforting and mellow, making the listener feel right at home with Peters. 'Rosebud' is a keyboard number that creates an eerie and subdued atmosphere. 'Footsteps' returns to more traditional musical stylings and creates an uplifting feeling in the listener. Petracovich is definitely worth a listen and will leave you wanting more of Jessica and her band. Dennis Halsey ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #287 ***************************
