What's up with that?? Interesting. I've been through _Medulla_ a few times but last week I swapped it for _Homogenic_ in my CD player and have been enjoying that quite a bit. _Medulla_ is brilliant, but it has that Laurie Anderson "difficult listening hour" feel to it and some annoying moments (like that part where Bjork sounds like she's coughing up a hairball or something). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 09:46:00 -0700 (PDT) From: alan Subject: Re: lactating twizzlers / bjork video dvd / wierd stuff on hungarian tv On Mon, 11 Oct 2004 gordodo@optonline.net wrote: > now that i have your attention from the subject line - i had on some random channel in budapest last night while i was packing and on came a bjork video i hadnt seen - it was Cocoon off Vespertine --- the only thing I could think of was that she was lactating twizzlers and getting consumed by licorice...which I guess is normal for bjork... > > has anyone picked up the bjork video dvd? after seeing the video it made me realzie how many i probably havent seen...is it something you watch more than once? Yeah. She had a previous video collection that did not have the "new" stuff. I ordered mine from the UK a year or so ago. It came out in the states reciently. There are a couple of weird videos on it. "Pagan Poetry" is also interesting visually. (If you are into a nekid Bjork.) I guess her dating Matthew Barney is having an effect... "I love you. You love me. Let's watch Masonic imagery..." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 11:25:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: lactating twizzlers / bjork video dvd / wierd stuff on hungarian tv I actually watch the first collection of Bjork videos oftenish. Still more than movies, though. meredith wrote: > I'm still addicted to _Medulla_, even as I realize that I enjoy listening > to _Vespertine_ more. What's up with that?? I really enjoy _Medulla_. We're listening to it at least once a day and I love it every time. It's so playful. I'm waiting for it to settle with me to decide if I like it as much as _Vespertine_. When _Vespertine_ came out I thought I couldn't possibly like it as much as _Homogenic_, then grew to love it more. Besides, Jim swears that little mewing sound on the last song is her calling my name, so I haven't gotten annoyed by that yet. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net .... http://www.sff.net/people/neile Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music . http://www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ...... http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 14:19:09 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: lactating twizzlers / bjork video dvd / wierd stuff on hungarian tv Hi, Steve responded: >_Medulla_ is brilliant, but it has that Laurie Anderson "difficult >listening hour" feel to it and some annoying moments (like that part >where Bjork sounds like she's coughing up a hairball or something). Heh -- I know exactly what you're talking about. I generally find "difficult listening hour" to be a good thing, though. It's definitely an album that benefits from the headphones-in-a-darkened-room treatment, which unfortunately I don't have much time for these days. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Oct 2004 11:27:13 +0100 From: Adam K Subject: odd music request. God, my prog-rock collection must be littered with these, most unsuitable for the party mood, but I'd certainly recommend "Watcher of the Skies" by Genesis, which has the most thunderous opening chords (it's a mellotron, but it sounds like the Organ from Hell) you're likely to hear. Also Be-Bop Deluxe's "Life in the Air Age" which concludes with the line "It's grim enough to make a robot cry". adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 21:50:41 -0500 From: Ken Blake Subject: Michel Gondry (was: ..., bjork video dvd, ...) Neile Graham wrote: >I actually watch the first collection of Bjork videos oftenish. > Are some of these directed by Michel Gondry? I just rented the dvd of his which I highly recommend to the ecto folk. There are 6 Bjork videos, 2 Chemical Brothers, 3 White Stripes, plus Massive Attack, Beck, Cibo Matto, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Kylie Minogue, Rolling Stones, his own band Oui Oui, and a few others. There are also a bunch of short films, commercials, and interviews. As he says in the intro, he chose quantity over quality. While some of his early stuff is quite amateurish, there is plenty that is excellent. At his best, Gondry creates visual art that dovetails nicely with the music. Who plays these kind of videos these days? If there is no outlet, then it doesn't make sense to spend money making decent videos. But surely it can't be MTV. As far as I can tell they haven't played any music in years and pretty much stopped playing anything interesting about 20 years ago. VH1 doesn't seem to be much better these days. Speaking of videos and their cost, has anyone seen the newest Sarah McLachlan video? The track is "World of Fire". The video alternates between a hand-cam view of Sarah playing her guitar (in her kitchen?) and text. The text says something like "This video cost $150k to make" and then goes on to say that they actually spent $15 to make the video, and used the rest of the money that would've been spent on the video to run an orphanage in SAfrica for a year, pay for a mobile medical unit, etc etc etc. You can see the video on Sarah's website at . It requires Flash. I haven't really paid attention to Sarah much recently, but I have to say that I rather like this idea. I spent lunchtime discussing political ads and the money that is spent on producing and airing them, and how IMHO this is a colossal waste of money that could be better spent on education, health care, social (And apologies if this was discussed recently and I missed it; I'm more than a little bit behind on ecto. :) /nm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 22:46:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Michel Gondry (was: ..., bjork video dvd, ...) Back in the day when we had cable, MTV2 played videos. I was amazed. But it seemed to play fewer as time went on. Much Music played videos then, too. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net .... http://www.sff.net/people/neile Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music . http://www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ...... http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #284 ***************************
