Also scored a copy of her 2002 CD. (There is a new one due next year.) You missed out, Portland ectovians. She is really good. She played solo on her twin keyboards and iBook with foot controls, and sang for about an hour. Her name references her grandfather's home town in Russia; she's 1/8 Russian and lives in San Francisco. I especially like her experimental stuff, which is about half her music. I wish she included lyrics on the CD. Oh, and guys take note that she's a really cute blonde in her mid-20s. I wouldn't have known about her but for this list. I also told her about us so hopefully she will join in and participate. Her site is offline tonight but I visited it earlier for song downloads. Go check it out at http://www.petracovich.com/. Definitely seek out the Klaatu version of that wonderful 70's pop/prog classic. Klaatu was a fairly obscure Canadian band. Their first album, which contains that song, is really quite good. When "Calling Occupants..." first came out the rumor was that Klaatu were really The Beatles recording under a pseudonym. That acclaim both elevated them in popularity and ultimately sunk them because they couldn't shake the notoriety. The Moody Blues album "To our Children's Children's Children" is a 60s concept album all about space travel. The first line of one of my favorite songs from the album "Out and In" is "Gazing past the planets, looking for total view". The album was inspired by the lunar landing and man's initial forays into space. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of meredith Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 2004 9:36 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: Odd Music Request Hi, Steve responded: >Right off the top of my head, there's "One Alien" (from _Rhodes II_) and >"100 Years" (from _Many Worlds are Born Tonight_) by Happy Rhodes, >contributing to each of the categories of aliens and robots. Welcome to the first quarterly newsletter from www.yungchenlhamo.com, the official website of Tibetan spiritual singer Yungchen Lhamo, Tibet's most exquisite voice in exile. In these times of war and unrest, with many innocent people suffering from acts of violence throughout the world, sometimes we don't know where to look--certainly not on the television!--for something positive to focus our minds on, to elevate and uplift us. In such challenging times, it is more important now than ever, that we center ourselves in our own spiritual lives. It is with the hope of expressing spirituality, love and compassion from the "Rooftop of the World" that Yungchen recently completed her summer tour, with important goals for the rest of 2004. Highlights of the year have included touring with Natalie Merchant for a string of dates in Washington D.C., Massachussetts and New York City; a special performance with Peter Gabriel at the Newport International Film Festival; concerts in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Mexico City (with Morrocan singer Hassan Hakmoun); in Dijon and Arles, France; in front of the "Maria Dolens" Bell of Peace in Rovereto, Italy; and a beautiful benefit concert in Tokyo honoring the Dalai Lama's birthday, with special guest Sadoa Watanabe, one of the world's great talents on saxophone. But the most exciting development of the year for Yungchen is the official launch of The Yungchen Lhamo Charitable Foundation, a non-profit organization founded to help needy Tibetans throughout the world. After being granted 501(c)3 status in the U.S. in June, the foundation sent its first $3,000 in donations to buy artificial limbs for 8 disabled Tibetans unable to walk without them. Meanwhile, the first major annual project of the foundation, which begins in January 2005, will be to provide pairs of shoes to Tibetan children without the money to buy them. In addition to these projects, Yungchen is also looking for people interested in sponsoring individual Tibetan refugees in need of support for food, medicine, clothing and education. Between now and the end of the year, she will be working again with web designer Charl Kroeger (www.designck.com) on building a separate website for the Yungchen Lhamo Charitable Foundation. In the recording studio this fall, Yungchen will be busy at work recording her fourth CD in anticipation of a 2005 release. She will also be joining Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan to perform on seven separate dates from October 17- 27 (for more information visit www.billy-corgan.com): SUN, Oct 17 at the 930 Club in Washington, D.C. TUES, Oct 19 at the Church of the Redeamer in Toronto, Canada. THURS, Oct 21 at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan. SAT, Oct 23 at the Soiled Dove in Denver, Colorado. SUN, Oct 24 at The Arts Theater in Vancouver, Canada. MON, Oct 25 at the EMP-Sky Church in Seattle, Washington. WED, Oct 27 at the Fairfax Silent Movie Theater in Los Angeles, California. Yungchen will also be performing three dates in Ireland in November: TUES, Nov 16 at 8pm in Limerick, Ireland. WEDS, Nov 17 at 9:30am in Limerick, Ireland. WEDS, Nov 17 in Dublin, Ireland. In the world of documentaries, Yungchen has agreed to record an original song for an upcoming documentary called American Zeitgeist, examining American identity with regard to the War on Terrorism post-9/11. The movie marks her second collaboration with filmmaker Rob McGann, in whose film Oracles & Demons of Ladakh, Yungchen's singing also appears (www.avenueeproductions.com). Oracles will be screening in Amsterdam in the first week of November as a part of the 2004 Himalaya Film Festival (www.himalayafilmfestival.nl). For all interested, the latest information about tour dates, times and venues, as well as new video features, can be found at www.yungchenlhamo.com. As we approach a busy Autumn season, Yungchen wishes everyone experiences a time of growth and development, and that leaders of the world will find creative ways to promote peaceful resolutions to current conflicts. Sincerely, Tinn on behalf of Yungchen Lhamo and The Yungchen Lhamo Charitable Foundation *** "[Natalie Merchant's] boldness was echoed in her choice of opening act, Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo, whose unaccompanied set of devotional songs was hypnotic." - --Variety magazine, reviewing Yungchen's August 6th performance at the Town Hall in New York City, touring with Natalie Merchant. ===== Learn more about Yungchen Lhamo & The Yungchen Lhamo Charitable Foundation URL: www.yungchenlhamo.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Oct 2004 12:13:38 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: new CD from Minnie Driver Was just watching The View and the musical guest was none other than Minnie Driver. Guess she has a new (first) CD out this week and she sang the title track (Everything I've Got in My Pocket), so I sat and listened. Not bad! Didn't blow me away but not bad! Seems kinda ecto-ish to me (not that I ever had a really good definition in my mind of "ecto-ish"). While I have (had) purchased and absconded several thousand albums/CDs in my two-score plus nine years, I never did consider myself a music critic of any worth, but based on the title-track she sang, I figure some here might enjoy what she has to offer. They interviewed her (of course) and she seems to have her head on straight about this new endevour for her (paraphrasing, "just give it a fair listen and forget that "it's another actor crossing over into the music field". I think you may like it"). Anyone here who has already bought the CD? She'd been playing in jazz clubs around Ireland, had signed a deal with EMI, and then Circle of Friends came out and took her life in a different direction. The few reviews I've seen of the album have all been very positive. Grrr. Wish I had that luxury. At any rate, I thought I'd mention some new releases I haven't seen much discussion of here. Rachael Sage - Ballads & Burlesque Ecto's own released her 6th album in August, and it's wonderful. In some ways a bit mellower than previous albums, but then sometimes I think not. It's grown on me a lot since I first got it, and I'm really adoring it now. www.rachaelsage.com Jill Sobule - Underdog Victorious Fun, quirky, and even funky (2 songs have a 70ish style to them, but in a good way). Perhaps her best album yet. Includes "Cinammon Park" a sort-of remake of Chicago's "Saturday in the Park" with new lyrics. www.jillsobule.com Cowboy Junkies - One Soul Now This is only my second listen, so not much to say yet, but I do like it. Kind of a dark feel to it. Comes with a disc of covers if you buy from Amazon. www.cowboyjunkies.com Rokia Traore - Bowmboi I highly recommend people check out this singer from Mali, even though I don't really know how to describe her. She's just really good. Music is kind of traditional, but in many ways not. Generally laid-back. Kronos Quartet plays on 2 tracks on the new album. Her second album, Wanita, from a few years ago is also wonderful. http://www.rokiatraore.net/ http://www.africanmusiciansprofiles.com/rokiat.htm JoAnn _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. We all like it -- especially the people who really wanted to hate it. Sorta like Dido in some ways, with a touch of Norah Jones. And she does a slow version of Springsteen's "Hungry Heart" that far better than would seem possible. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #281 ***************************
