So distinct, that I swore it was a new Erin McKeown song. But it didn't quite sound like her. In fact, it veered a bit into Bjork territory. I was confused. Eventually, Nic Harcourt back-announced who it was. Regina Spektor. Initially, I was even more befuddled, because I thought he meant Ronnie Spector. Then I realized that that is a different person. Looking at the comments in the ecto guide, I'm surprised no one else made those comparisons. *********** Just saw the Section Quartet last night in Echo Park performing OK Computer. Sam Phillips joined them on stage as the Computer Voice on "Fitter Happier". Very cool concert. They even threw in some different covers at the end, including Queens of the Stone Age and The Darkness. (And, if you have any questions about the shows etc. - feel free to write me c/o management@allisoncrowe.com) - - cheers, Adrian Allison Crowe - Secrets Tour Passionate and intense vocalist/pianist Allison Crowe celebrates the release of "Secrets", the west coast-based singer-songwriter's new album (distributed by Festival, Canada's premiere purveyor of jazz, blues, folk, roots and world music) with her Fall tour. Allison Crowe's sound appeals to an uniquely broad audience. She has been compared to a crazily wide range of artists ~ including Patti Smith, Laura Nyro, Carole King, Eddie Vedder, Mahalia Jackson, Joni Mitchell and those mentioned in some of the quotes below. Really, though, she just sounds like Allison Crowe. As one newspaper reviewer has said: "Make your own comparisons then forget them." Allison's roots are in classical and jazz, and she embraces rock, folk, pop, blues, gospel and roots music in her sound. She performs her own songs along with interpretations of material by Leonard Cohen, Pearl Jam, Ani DiFranco, The Beatles and others. The National Post (one of Canada's two national newspapers) has described Allison's sound as "jazz/blues/rock" and her voice as combining "Janis Joplin's ballsy power and Sarah McLachlan's lilting sweetness". ". In 2002, Allison was honored to appear in the favorite artists section of Jewel's official website (@ jeweljk.com), which stated: "Beautifully moody or riotously rocking, Allison Crowe creates piano-based music of transcendent quality." The Victoria Jazzfest International guide says this: "Described as 'the next big thing to come from Vancouver Island,' singer-pianist Allison Crowe is definitely a phenomenon in the making. Crowe is a certified poet whose rich, powerful voice shows the influences of everyone from Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan to Janis Joplin and even Nina Simone. Born and raised in Nanaimo, Crowe is a classically trained pianist who has gradually created her own special blend of jazz, folk, rock and blues." "Allison Crowe has a voice to fall in love with," says the U.K.'s Record of the Day. Background: Allison Crowe is about to embark on an extended solo tour of eastern Canada (and select U.S. cities). The "Secrets" tour will launch September 23 in Hartland, New Brunswick, the smallest incorporated town in Canada, and close October 16 in New York City, one of the bigger burgs in world. Between these dates, Allison Crowe will perform in a dozen cities from Charlottetown to Sudbury. This time last year, Allison was in New York City, being courted by a new, major label-associated, record company. She decided to not go that route, and, instead, returned home to Nanaimo, B.C. to create her own label (inspired by the examples of Loreena McKennitt and Ani DiFranco). Since then, Allison has released three CDs (two EPs and one full-length album) to great critical and public response and her solo career has been steadily gaining momentum as she builds in a grassroots way - largely through the internet and word of mouth. Her just-released debut full-length album, Secrets, was picked up for distribution last month by Festival (Canada's premiere purveyor of jazz, blues, roots, folk and world music). Tracks off Secrets have been continuously among the top downloads at Amazon.com since the album's release. Allison recently has held #1 download positions in categories ranging from Jazz, and Blues, to Singer-Songwriter, Gospel/Hymns, Celtic Folk and more, and she's reached top 5 in Alternative Rock. Her song downloads have been ranked the highest of any independent artist on Amazon.com. ~~~ MUSIC: A pair of tracks off Allison's seasonal album, "Tidings": "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen): http://www.allisoncrowe.com/hallelujah112.mp3 (128kps) http://www.allisoncrowe.com/hallelujah256.mp3 (256kps) "River" (Joni Mitchell): http://www.allisoncrowe.com/river112.mp3 (128kps) http://www.allisoncrowe.com/river256.mp3 (256kps) And a selection of songs off Allison's just-released, debut, full-length, album, "Secrets": "Secrets" (Allison Crowe): http://www.allisoncrowe.com/Secrets256.mp3 http://www.allisoncrowe.com/Secrets112.mp3 "Montreal" (Allison Crowe): http://www.allisoncrowe.com/Montreal256.mp3 http://www.allisoncrowe.com/Montreal112.mp3 "How Long" (Allison Crowe): http://www.allisoncrowe.com/HowLong112.mp3 http://www.allisoncrowe.com/HowLong256.mp3 "What About You" (Allison Crowe): http://www.allisoncrowe.com/WhatAboutYou112.mp3 http://www.allisoncrowe.com/WhatAboutYou256.mp3 "Why music?" Right off the top of my head, there's "One Alien" (from _Rhodes II_) and "100 Years" (from _Many Worlds are Born Tonight_) by Happy Rhodes, contributing to each of the categories of aliens and robots. There's got to be something she could pilfer from a musical number from _Futurama_, certainly for robots (go Bender!) and probably for aliens too. If she's the "fiend" you say she is, parts from the episode where Bender goes to Robot Hell and meets the Robot Devil could be very fitting. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Oct 2004 19:55:08 -0700 From: Ethan Straffin Subject: Re: Odd Music Request Can't forget "Rapture" by Blondie... Don't forget "Save Our Souls"! Not my favorite Happy song by a long shot, but it sure does fit the theme. Or the song woj just played for me earlier this evening from wfmu.org: "Calling All Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" by, of all people, The Carpenters (!). Apparently it's a cover of a song originally done by a band called Klaatu, but I've never heard that version. Then there's Marvin The Paranoid Android's song from the _Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy_ BBC radio play... and Styx's classic "Mr. Roboto", of course.
