The files you have (I assume you got the vorbis-tools package) are command line utilities for encoding/decoding etc. Generally speaking, these would not be something you as end user should be exposed to. There _might_ be a way to make MusicMatch use them, but that completely depends on how well designed the musicmatch program is, and going by the complete lack of support information on their site (at a casual glance - it might be there with them just hiding it very well), I don't have much hope of that. Perhaps a geek who has actual experience with the program might know. I'd like to take a different tack, however. Is there any particular reason you're using MusicMatch? I know next to nothing about it, but if it doesn't have an option internally somewhere to allow you to choose to produce files in Vorbis ogg format, then that doesn't give me a high opinion. If there isn't some good reason for using MusicMatch, try perhaps switching to CDex as ripping program - http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/downloads.php - which (like many, many other programs) has the option in its preferences to choose any number of output formats. (Options -> Settings -> Encoder -> the "Encoder" selectbox). CDex is not the most aesthetically pleasing program out there, but it does its job, and it does it very well. One final note, probably superfluous, but it can't hurt to add it: as both .mp3 and vorbis .ogg are lossy encodings, converting from one to the other will produce worse results than encoding directly in either one. There is a real benefit in using Vorbis ogg, but only when ripping directly from CD. (Or when converting from lossless formats like FLAC or .wav) Sander ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Oct 2004 03:20:29 -0700 From: "John Zimmer" Subject: Re: technical question Adam K queried: > Here's one for the techheads, and I apologise for the non-music > content. No need; codec questions are tangential but not unrelated to our nominal topic. ;) > I've been to the Ogg Vorbis site and hit the download button, and > seem now to be in possession of four files with no idea what to do > with them. So....can anyone tell me what to do with them? How do > I link them to MusicMatch so that I can make Ogg Vorbis tracks? The answer, as it is so often in life, is "it depends". If MusicMatch is a requirement for your venture into Ogg Vorbis encoding, it doesn't look like you can. However, there are other apps available that can do the job. Check here for Xiph's list of third party Windows software: http://www.vorbis.com/software.psp?pid=2 OggdropXPd is a small, simple encoder that permits drag-n-drop encoding of previously ripped WAV files, if memory serves. It's also possible to use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) or CDex to perform both ripping and encoding to Ogg Vorbis (and other codecs) transparently. A lot of people swear by EAC, but I prefer CDex's simpler interface. All of these are freeware, by the way, and CDex is even open source. John ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Oct 2004 10:50:53 -0400 From: "dave" Subject: musicmatch and ogg vorbis I looked at the support section on musicmatch's site, and found this: Musicmatch is committed to supporting formats based on customer demand and traction in the market, and MP3 is the dominant music file format at present. We will continue to evaluate and monitor adoption of additional formats, such as Ogg Vorbis, for possible inclusion within Musicmatch Jukebox. If and when we do offer support for Ogg Vorbis or other additional formats, we will make a public announcement. One thing you could try if you're using Windows is CDex, http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/ It's a free ripper that's supposed to support a bunch of different formats, including Ogg Vorbis. I just got it the other day so I haven't tried the Ogg option yet. When you download it, there's an installer version and a zip version, I got the zip, just unzip it to a folder and it's ready to go.
