Here are a few gems I've recently purchased: Ashley Chambliss, "In This Ocean" (Best song: "Seasons") Corrinne May, "Fly Away" (Best song: "Mr. Beasley") Lysa Flores, "The Making of a Trophy Grrrl," which just arrived yesterday (Best song: "The Damaged Ones") All three are wonderful pop-Ecto musicians, with incredibly rich and beautiful voices. - --Bill Adler n.p. Damn them to hell for not letting me buy all her albums - or any for that matter. So i've been hunting around and can find exactly one album as import. Are there any kind souls out there that can help me out? I am obsessed - must hear more. What is her story? I'm probably completely out of the loop on this one (as usual). kiri ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Sep 2004 08:20:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: help - brigitte fontaine The only Brigitte Fontaine I've heard is a single she did with Stereolab and it was just ghastly so I haven't been inclined to search for more. However, I have bought several French disks through amazon.fr. I know just enough French and am familiar enough with the English amazon sites to navigate my way through there without disaster. The disks arrive, even. I recommend it. While you're there, see what Gabriel Yacoub (I looked to see, and damn, there's a new live disc so I ordered it) and Malicorne they have. And Francoiz Breut and Kohann. - --Neile On Fri, 24 Sep 2004, kiri wrote: > Hey All, > > I just discovered Brigitte Fontaine surfing through the French Itunes > store. Astrid Williamson's solo albums are pretty pop-py, but still interesting, and I love her rough voice. I'm envious of you seeing her live! - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net .... http://www.sff.net/people/neile Editor, The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music . http://www.ectoguide.org Workshop Administrator, Clarion West ...... http://www.clarionwest.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Sep 2004 12:39:39 -0700 From: Michael Pearce Subject: LoB House Concert in PDX This is an early announcement of a concert with Cyoakha, Krystov and Pablo Burton of Land of the Blind performing at a house concert at my place on Sunday, Oct. 17, 7:30-10:00pm. I told you yonks ago that I have broad taste in music--I saw the Cramps in Dallas Saturday night, and it was a fun show. The opening act was a 3-piece rockabilly combo called Lone Star Trio, and they did a marvelous version of the big band classic "Sing! Sing! Sing!." It was hip-swiveling good. Then came one of the strangest things I've ever seen onstage and it was the lead singer for The Chesterfield Kings from NYC. I think he was channeling the late, great Stiv Bators, freak factor turned up to 11. The Cramps were themselves and an aptly raunchy time was had by all. I crave the profoundness of Happy's music, but find it edifying occasionally to fall in with a bunch of loud, sweaty people who've got good taste. Cheers! I've seen the Cramps 3 times, the most recent being last year. But a good 7 or so years had passed since the previous time, and I didn't think time had done wonders for them. Or maybe me. More likely a mix of the two. But it felt to me like one of those "hope I die before I get old things". The Cramps, as rita says, are still the Cramps. But they are about 50 years old! Lux is still wearing his make-up and low-slung tight leather pants and deep throating the microphone, but for some reason, this time he just seemed really old to me. And it made the show feel a bit perverse. neal At 8:29 PM +0000 9/27/04, R.L Smith wrote: >I told you yonks ago that I have broad taste in music--I saw the >Cramps in Dallas Saturday night, and it was a fun show.
