I'd heard a lot about her on this list, but never given her a listen before. She was nice. Just when I thought she was getting a little too "same" for my tastes, she mixed it up with a few more lively pieces. Her stuff really benefits from having a cello and a violin along. Go check her out this tour; it's well worth it. - --- My definition of good literature is that which can be read by an educated reader, and reread with increased pleasure. -- Gene Wolfe ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 14:35:51 -0400 From: "dave" Subject: More French music.. Ok, on to more important things, I've aquired some more music in French.. First, Lara Fabian's 'En Toute Intimite' DVD, which is a nice intimate concert performance. Lara is accompanied by piano on most songs, with string quartet or solo cello or violin on several songs, so the focus is really put on her voice. Her performance is theatric, emotional, and at times playful. High points for me are the songs 'Caruso' and 'Je suis malade', at the end of which she drops the microphone to her side and just sings straight to the audience. Second, Nolwenn Leroy's self titled album. Nolwenn was the winner of the TV competition Star Academy, which from what I gather is France's version of Pop/American Idol. Her album though, sounds nothing like what I was expecting, she has a rich deep voice that sounds nothing like William Hung . Here's a link to some lyrics and samples (click the green arrow next to the song titles). http://www.nolwenn.info/paroles.htm ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 13:53:46 -0400 From: "dave" Subject: Re: Uncle Sam wants your airwaves for $ Meth writes: >> but I can go without television if it comes to that. Would this be the same economic slump I'm seeing where almost everyone I know has a big screen TV and a $60 a month cable subscription, not to mention cell phone and broadband internet access? Where I see more and more people driving BMWs and $40,000 SUVs? And of course where every kid older than 12 has a pager, cell phone, X-Box, their own computer, $150 sneakers, designer clothes, etc.. etc...? I keep hearing how bad off we are, but in the real world I'm just not seeing it. As for eliminating OTA broadcasts, I'm certainly against it. I work in the public safety communications field and I can tell you there is really no need for them to take over the TV bandwidth. What they need is to better manage the spectrum they have now. This is the problem you have when the head of the FCC is a political appointee instead of someone who actually has knowledge of the field. As far as I'm concerned the first thing Bush should do in his next term is dump both Powells. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 12:10:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: Uncle Sam wants your airwaves for $ - --- dave wrote: > Economic slump? The big splurge is Sky, but we don't have all the channels. And Broadband here is a deal. Remember that except for Newcastle and other such places, we pay per minute per call -- even for local calls. It's cheaper at nights and weekends. At least now, I don't have to look at the clock and realise I need to wait another hour until the phone rates go down. ;) Where > I see more and more people driving BMWs and $40,000 > SUVs? I drive a VW Lupo that isn't even sold in the US because it's so small (has a back seat and hatch, but it's small -- shorter than the new Mini Coopers) and the diesel version gets 72 mpg on the highway. VW figures Americans don't want cars that get that good mileage. But then, I saw a nearby BP station just raise the price of basic petrol from 82.9/litre to 83.9/litre. We'd love to pay US $2.00-$3.00 per gallon -- so cheap! Ellen, ex-pat American in the UK and seeing Kate Rusby on Saturday. Oh, and watching Bremner, Bird and Fortune on the 14-inch TV. The new series starts tonight; we need these comedians right now with everything going on in the workd. ===== "Literature stops in 1100. (also proves that dave lives in some well-off suburb...) personally, i doubt that this thread (or any other unlearned, undisciplined discussion of complex social issues) is going to significantly enlighten or enrich the ecto community -- can we just call it done and get back to discussing good music? example: i am listening to Bettie Serveert's "Log 22", which may be their best album yet, but has not gotten much (if any) attention on Ecto. to me, it seems a bit more mature and ambitious without losing any of the giddy energy of their past work. some great songwriting, and a broader palette of sounds than usual. it's one of my favorite albums from last year. hmm, i guess i should get around to a "best of '03" before '04 is over... - -g - -- "i've never been afraid to change the circumstances of the world" - -- Happy Rhodes [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type application/pkcs7-signature which had a name of smime.p7s] ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V10 #269 ***************************
